Pacing of the Movie?

I havent seen the full cut yet, only watching the 36 min leak online. The first part of the movie seems very rushed and doesnt flow too well. It seems that they try to0 hard to stay true to the book. Does the movie slow down a little bit and flow a little better after the wedding? Of course I am going to see the movie multiple times. What do you think?

The film starts out on a high note, and I agree, it seems very rushed from then on. After the Wedding, it continues the fast-paced electrifying scenes. You have the cafe attack, and then Grimmauld Place. That itself is slower, but it doesn't last for long and you have it mixed in with a montage in the middle which shows the new Ministry, the Hogwarts Express, and Diagon Alley. Then you have the Ministry Infiltration, which is just right in terms of length and pacing. It gives it enough set-up, with a pretty good payoff and leaving you pining for more.

When you reach the forest and camping scenes, the film takes a huge turn and slows down a lot. There are a few slow camping scenes at first, and then, after the first traces of Ron's jealousy, the pacing during the camping picks up because a montage starts. That is certainly better. Then you have Ron's leaving, which is a nice emotional moment. More camping, including a slower scene where Harry and Hermione are on the rocks and the more exciting Harry/Hermione dance. It is slower there, but then they go to Godric's Hollow, where it picks up in pace. After Godric's Hollow, there is another slow scene by a snowy river, but that scene leads into the Silver Doe. After the Silver Doe, obviously the film becomes fast-paced again, leading into scenes like the Horcrux Destruction, Ron's Return, Xenophilius and the House Attack, ultimately leading up to the fast-paced Snatcher Chase, Malfoy Manor, and Dobby's death. The film has only around one minute of emotional satisfaction, with a short burial for Dobby, before switching to a breathtaking action scene, and ending abruptly, leaving the audience quite windswept.

So fast-paced and clunky at the beginning, smoother and fast-paced towards the end, with room to stretch and breathe in the middle through slower, emotional scenes peppered with more exciting ones, but not too action-packed. The pacing isn't bad, it is very good. The film doesn't feel long or short at all.

What's the order of events? Is it Diagon Alley-Hogwarts Express-Ministry?

Thanks for the awesome post Aaron. I just kinda felt it MAY hurt the experience for the people who haven't read the book and confuse them on some parts. Though the only thing that matters, is weather you like it or not. And no matter what, I will watch it many times im sure.

Oh and the reason I think about the pacing and the people that havent read the book. Is because I want this movie to make like Avatar money. I would love for it to crush some records. I may be a fan-boy and would love to see a 90+% Tomatoes score. The score kinda disappoints me and I think it has to do with the pacing.

I hope critics will love Part 2, and I don't see how they could!

I agree that the opening felt rushed so i was also glad i saw the opening 36 minutes before, but the pacing is better in the second half in my opinion.

I believe it was train, ministry, Diagon Alley.
  • The pacing is great! I don't know why the critics were complaining about the "slow-paced"! The movie is so fast!

    It's perfect.
  • I loved the pace too!
I think critics are being too picky with the movie.

I think the film is very confident that it will connect its intended audience and and basically tells critics to shove off.

You dare show your ignorance of the story in my house?

  • i have said this in many posts, but my friends saw it, and they thought that it went really fast, and that it was perfect, i asked them if they felt the scenes slow and they told me that they never felt that way, I think their opinion is important since none of them have read the books

  • I think the movie is absolutely amazing. I have watched it three times now. The pacing is very good. It helps the development of the characters. And there are action or emotional scenes all the time. The movie is INCREDIBLE.

I thought their were some pacing problems. A few too many scenes where they didnt seem to know what they were doing so were just sitting around. What would have fixed this in my opinion? A couple of scenes at Hogwarts.
  • But I loved how they don't know what to do. The book has the same spirit. They are lost: don't know where to go, don't know what to do. They are hungry, tired, sad... the movie has all this spirit. I really really loved it.
  • the thing is arron.. your kinda slagging it off there but on your profile you put...

That was incredible. Deathly Hallows is the best film yet in the Potter series, a dazzlingly-well made film, an artsy blend of action, emotion, and impending darkness; boosted by strong performances, stunning visuals and cinematography, and glorious production design. This may well be one of the best films of the year.........
just wondering what you actually think?? haha

i felt the pacing wasnt a big problem, i missed the background score really..it was not there at important times. Many felt like a documentary movie here, with more silence in the background, though it felt dark, the important scenes arent covered with background scores..My friends Review: "Good Movie ,but with no background scores it looks like a documentary movie "

    Scenes at hogwarts. Exactly!

I thought the silence was brilliant. Just an opinion.

I'm tired of loud music that prevents you from thinking about what is going on.

Perhaps that is why some people object to the pacing. They don't know the story, don't know all the stuff that's in the books but just implied in the movie, so they don't have anything to think about.

Comic book movies don't want you to think.
