What puzzles me is that they never really specify when this is all taking place in the books. Like the year and the century or whatever.

Anyone thought about the electronics etc Dudley has? It looks like it is real time in the movies tho :p But I guess you're right :P

Yeah, the movies are set in "realtime" as you put it. So were the books, really, it's not like Jo went out of her way to set it a decade ago, that was just when she started writing it.

The books give you a hint as to exactly what year it is... and I'm assuming the movies will follow suit. The books give you the exact year they occur in in Book 2 when Harry, Ron, and Hermione attend Nearly Headless Nick's 500'th Deathday. This identifies book 2 as 1992 (see date on the deathday cake) therefore since Harry is supposed to be 12 years old in his second year, he was born in 1980 and you can do the math from there.

Harry parents died when he was 1 and it said in the book they died in 1930 or 1931 therefor count on 17 years.. so either 1998 or 1997

James potter and Lily potter
died in 31 october 1981

so Harry is supposed to be born in summer of 1980
so when he was 17 it was 1987

"nimbus 2000" was just a name or brand series or if she meant the date it would be just a flaw in her epic

notice that the writer never mentioned anything else about muggle technologies except "Weaslys had a car" :D so there's no contradictions at all in the time line , and that was very clever of her .. . . . .

it sorts to fit on our time but it actually took place on 1990's ..
