  it's not the director's interpretation.
  what wilbo says, i think, it's that he got this look when he was remade in GoF, with the bone, flesh and blood thing...

  There was once a man. He died. then he came back to life.and then he went on an adventure.to find hogwarts.because he is crazy and thinks there are actually wizards(ps this guy is me)
  then he found hermione and neville.he then killed neville bc no one likes him.and his teeth are weird.and then the man and hermione went skipping along into the distance.then hermione tripped.her face hit a rock and she started bleeding profusely.she did some crazy spell.but she made a mistake.but then the guy realized hermione never makes mistakes.he realized it was voldemort using polyjuice potion.then voldemort said avada kedavra on the guy and he died. the END. tragic story. and thats how voldemort lost his nose. =P
