Does anybody know why they didnt put Dobby in movie four and five? I always thought Dobby was a huge part in both books..

Dobby was a big part in terms of how much was written about him in those books, but his role in them was by no means important. At least, not in a way that his role couldn't easily be given to someone else (eg. Neville)
• I just really like Dobby thats why I'm asking. Hes in my top ten characters.

Ah. Well if it makes you feel any better, they're supposedly expanding his role in Deathly Hallows to make his death just as emotional as it is in the book : )
• I didnt know that thanks for telling me. I was so sad when Dobby died. JK Rowling like killed off a lot of my favorite characters in the seventh book.. (moony, tonks, fred ect.)

oh not MORE emotional - i couldn't stop crying when he died :(
• me niether. I really really liked Dobby.
• hah stupid me, as usual, stumbled across a spoiler so I knew he was going to die ... Emma Watson!!!

So like I don't know if it was emotional or not ...

i think he died because she needed to show that everyone played a vital role, elves, goblins, witches, wizards, gryffindors, hufflepuffs, ravenclaws, slytherins, he should have definitely been shown because that shows how important he was to harry even if his role wasn't too important.

Y THE FUCK DID SHE KILL TONKS AND LUPIN SRRY FOR SPOILING BUT YOU SHOULDNT BE ON THE SITE AND NOT EXPECT PEOPLE TO TALK ABOUT ALL OF THE BOOKS
• Werthyman, if you were talking to HermioneAnnGranger, I dont really understand why your flipping out. Its not like they complained about the spoiler. And also, I think all harry potter fans have the right to be on this website whether they read all the books yet or not. Im sorry but I think it is unfair to tell people that they shouldnt be on this website just because they didnt read all the books yet.

I kno devasted he died.... I did like Dobby
HermioneAnnGranger have you read the harry potter books?
• ya i was really mad that dobby wasnt in the order of the phoenix because he is the one that tells harry about the room of requirements not neville. i dont understand why they did that..
• Wilbo421Wilbo421 Posts: 1,157
...uh, because introducing a character who hasn't been there since the second film just to tell Harry where a room is is very pointless and wasteful of money. It works to have Neville find it and tell Harry about it, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah I have, but I have read them loads of times now. But I was just in the middle bit in DH when I saw it on utube.

Sorry, it's just to me it is a fairly obvious and major thing you don't do in films.

• well i think it is better to pertain to the story instead of thinking of some way to save money

Ok. I personally think it's better to choose an option that works best for the quality of the film over a "it's in the book, let's use that" option.

Yes, Dobby's role was and is very important. He is one of the few that are most loyal to Harry and would do anything for Harry. He's not in book 3, but from book 4 and on, he is there helping Harry out.

You don't know what you are talking about! To Harry, losing Dobby was like losing Sirius all over again, that was how important Dobby was and how dear he was to Harry. And adding Dobby would not have been a major problem for them.

I would have to disagree with wilbo and agree with sectumsempra08. If your screen writers are good and the director really wants to, they could've done it. Dobby was in and out of book 2 just like how he is in and out of all the other books, they should've had Dobby in all the movies (part 4,5,6).

Thank you, but I do know what I'm talking about. First of all, THIS:
To Harry, losing Dobby was like losing Sirius all over again, that was how important Dobby was and how dear he was to Harry. And adding Dobby would not have been a major problem for them.
hasn't got anything to do with what THIS:
Sorry, it's just to me it is a fairly obvious and major thing you don't do in films.
was about.

So it's actually you who doesn't know what I'm talking about, not me.

It is practically a rule in film (I'm studying film atm, and not to blow my own trumpet, but it is a pretty basic rule), you don't introduce a character that you haven't seen for several films, just to give one tiny piece of information only to have him disappear again.

I'm not saying Dobby shouldn't have been in films 4 to 6. Quite the opposite. I was just saying that there is no point in putting him in for one minute of screentime just to serve a tiny purpose. Better to put him in with several minutes of screentime per film, doing something important or involving. So now you're done taking things I said out of context...
• he shouldnt be in 7 then - why the hell would they just bring him in to kill him off if he wasnt in 4 5 and 6 too??
i'd be surprised if he is in 7 - but he's such a loveable character - yer neville is cute, but dobby's cooler :-)
hehe - plus, it's kind of a diss to him, dont ya think? if, like, they have kreacher and a load of house elves - very imp. part cause it leads to r/hr!!!! - and have no ref. to dobby in any of the other movies part from 2
i, for one, am not up to dissing a character ! even if they are fictional :)

Uhm..........What? You stick to your basic film rule of thumb and I'll stick with mines! Dobby is one of the most loved characters, he should've been in movies 4,5,and 6. Really, its not that hard to CG him in and if you've got good screen writers, you would not leave out one of the characters that your main character really holds dear. I am in film, actually visual arts and effects and all my friends are screenwriters and graphic artists and a few guys studying film (directing and producing) at the moment. And everyone agrees that Dobby should've been in them all, I love the HP films, but really, Dobby got robbed!

I'm not saying that I'm right and you're wrong, it's just my opinion over yours. There will always be lovers and there will always be haters, and if going to get in film, you best get used to that.

Wow, how far did you search? This discussion was months ago, I am going to say that neither I or wilbo is right about this topic and we are not wrong about it either. Its just different opinions on the matter, wilbo does make some good point, but still I stand my ground; Dobby got robbed. And lupinshowl I don't care about you, you don't care about me, but thanks on your opinion about the topic at hand, Dobby. Good to see that you have cleared your mind of some sexual stuff or if not; than good to see that you are respecting others by keeping those certain thoughts to yourself. Thanks!
• yes I was searching the forum and saw Dobbys name.................Dobby is such a great character................a very trusted friend of Harry Potter's............he is very important..............Dobby got robbed.........I was not happy at all not seeing him in Half Blood Prince...........I wanted to see the 2 house elves fighting.............Dobby and Kreacher.................Dobby's the best..........
