I still think it's a safe and dull choice; David yates and Alfonso Cuaron were both very odd choices for directing a harry potter movie at first and they turned out to be phenomenal. It was time for them to pick a new director that could possibly surprise us as we were before.
Rowling's Facebook page pretty much confirmed that Yates will be the director of the whole trilogy. I'm happy with that. Yay for continuity!
Warner Bros. have confirmed that the new film series, written by J.K. Rowling and featuring the magical creatures and characters inspired by Harry Potter's Hogwarts textbook 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' and its fictitious author, Newt Scamander, will be a trilogy, with release dates of 2016, 2018, and 2020. The studio has also confirmed that the films, set in the wizarding world but predating Harry Potter himself, will be directed by David Yates and will reunite the filmmaking team of David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.

Please do yourself a favor and look before you post. A press release from WB was posted 2 days ago confirming it.

lol I was pointing at the fact that the Rowling Facebook posts explicitly says he will direct the filmS, plural. Because the original WB announcement from two days ago only said "Fantastic Beasts will be directed by David Yates," not making it clear whether he would direct the entire trilogy or just the first film.
I'm not against the idea of Kloves helping Rowling with the screenplay. I'm not his biggest fan, but keep in mind that she has zero experience with screenwriting. Kloves at least knows what doesn't work in a cinematic sense, for instance the scene at the astronomy tower in which Harry is immobilized under the invisibility cloak. Kloves gave Harry the choice to trust Snape in that scene, which is a clever adaptation choice in keeping the protagonist somewhat pro-active in the scene. And we got to see his reaction when Dumbledore was murdered! I'm not certain Rowling would have changed that if she had adapted the book herself. I think Kloves will be helpful in re-writing some scenes or story elements that Rowling perhaps thinks works in the screenplay, but in reality don't.
As for Yates directing, it's a safe and dull choice. The producers know what they will get from Yates, but I hope he only directs the first film. I want to see other directors' interpretation of the universe.
I agree on Kloves. It's a lot of the times his writing and the dialogue I don't like, but his scenes are for the most part written well.
Disagree about Yates though. Can't wait to see what he can do. I'd imagine more scenery and different environments which I quite liked about DH1 from him.
Yates is really good at framing scenes and letting them develop.
I think back to the way the cave in HBP was handled and all I can think is "wow, give this guy a chance to do this more" and yes, he should with Fantastic Beasts. There will a lot of outdoor environments. I hope the most intense and emotional scenes take place outdoors.
"If you make yourself more than just a man... If you devote yourself to an ideal... You become something else entirely- A Legend."
I noticed on the Pottermore website update under the minister list that the threat of Grindlewald was between 1925-1939, do you think he could be the villain?

He did nail that scene. As for intense and emotional scenes outdoors, I remember that he handled Dobby's death brilliantly. The subtle shaky cam was quite effective.
With such talent like Sir Michael Gambon, Sir Richard Harris, Robbie Coltrane, Dame Maggie Smith, Gary Oldman, and Helena Bonham Carter having been cast in the HP movies, I can hardly wait to see who will be cast in Fantastic Beasts.
I am so glad the previous teams are coming back I was worried that they wouldn't have Stuart Craig, could you imagine the inconsistency if it was all CGI sets and imagery like most of these movies today.
What excites me at the minute is that if they start filming in late summer then they should already have set ideas, concept art, prop designs and costume design all lined up, I can't wait to see how the 1920's Wizarding World looks.
I hope we find out more soon, even if it's costume designers, casting announcements excite me though I can't wait to find out who plays Newt or the rest of the characters.
He seems a good choice, judging by his recent work I would say it will look most visually like Sherlock Holmes, more or less what we got with the final two films.
Reporters from Variety and The Wrap revealed this afternoon the actors and actresses who are up for several key roles in the forthcoming Harry Potter spinoff.
– Tina: Described as “grounded.” Testing for this role are Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, Allison Sudol, and Lili Simmons.
– Queenie: Tina’s older sister and described as a “bombshell.” Testing for this role are Kate Upton, Katherine Waterston and Elizabeth Debicki
– Jacob: Described as Newt’s “rival,” testing for this role are Steve Zisis, Zack Pearlman and Dan Fogler.
Really difficult to have an opinion considering that we know next to nothing about these characters. But going just by name, I'd pick Saoirse Ronan, Katherine Waterston and Steve Zissis.

*crosses fingers for minimal involvement*
No need to be a bitch about it, though.

I'm also happy with Eddie, I like him as an actor and it's a cool and fun fact that Emma played his girlfriend in her first post-Potter role.
