Personally, I don't think the change will help. The original release date wouldn't have existed if they didn't think they could make it; and with it being pushed back so far, people will lose interest.
I honestly think this is for the better. Expectations don't die this easily, even more when talking about a movie THAT rushed. With this, they can do a better job and the marketing can work more efficiently.
One thing is when a movie is in post-production past a year, has trailers and everything, but then is pushed back when it's like, two or three months due to premiere. In these cases, I do agree it cuts the hype, because it demonstrates insecurity. But Maze Runner had a rushed schedule from the beginning, and the situation with Wes isn't appearing to be the "Carl Rinsch situation", where he couldn't handle his first-time as a director of something as big as TMR, so I think it's all cool.
Besides, not only that, there is a probability that, if it is as Wes said ("it was not my decision, but I agreed with it"), it could mean that the material was better than the guys at Fox expected, to the point where they are pushing it back to revamp the entire marketing machine for the movie.
Quaalude fight: because drunk fight is too mainstream.
Now they can promote the movie using big summer movies by attaching teasers and trailers with them, use things like the Teen Choice Awards or the MTV Movie Awards for trailer premieres, and even have an actual presence at San Diego Comic Con.
if there going to delay it at least put it in a good movie release time frame like summer 2014. September is another one of those months where the studios dump all there not so good movies.
I honestly don't think this is going to bomb. As long as they don't market it as a wannabe teen franchise, they're fine. The material is perfect for post-apocalyptic/thriller/adventure enthusiasts, they should attract a solid crowd from both sexes and all age groups. I think September is the perfect niche. The only thing it has against it is that it will be a blockbuster-type film hitting theaters in the very late summer, as blockbusters will be getting stale with audiences. Think Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Otherwise, this is obviously a good decision. It means they are taking their time to handle the material well and put out a good film.
I'm not sure how i feel about this. I'm super angry of course that we have to wait so long for it, but this could be good for the film. They'll have time to make it really good, and to advertise it more. Also, there are so many YA adaptations coming next year, it'll be good to spread them out, and use big ones like Catching Fire and Divergent to advertise the movie to similar fandoms.

EXCLUSIVE: Though it doesn’t release the sci-fi action thriller The Maze Runner until September 19, 20th Century Fox has exercised the option to buy The Scorch Trials, the second book in the four-novel series written by James Dashner. The studio has set T.S. Nowlin to adapt. The Maze Runner, which was adapted by Noah Oppenheim, Grant Myers and Nowlin, marks the directorial debut of student Academy Award winner Wes Ball and has an ensemble led by Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter and Aml Ameen.
Ball will supervise Nowlin’s adaptation of The Scorch Trials. In The Maze Runner, a group of youngsters find themselves in The Glades, and have to find their way through a seemingly impenetrable maze. In The Scorch Trials, the main kids have escaped, but now they face an even more treacherous challenge on the open roads of a devastated planet. Nowlin most recently wrote on Fantastic Four, and he and the director went to Florida State University’s film school together and are also planning a feature adaptation of Ball’s short film Ruin for Fox. Nowlin’s credits include Agent 13, set at Universal with Charlize Theron and Rupert Wyatt attached, and Our Name Is Adam, which Mary Parent will produce and Tom Cruise will star in for Paramount. The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman are producing The Scorch Trials along with Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, and Joe Hartwick Jr. Emma Watts and Jason Young are overseeing.
Nowlin is represented by WME, Caliber Media and Jeff Frankel, Ball by APA and The Gotham Group, and Dashner by Michael Bourret at Dystel & Goderich Literary Management.
Is it just me or they are betting too much on it...they dont promote, they push it back...they dont know if the first one willstick, and yet they are already going for number 2...excess of confidence to much?
Dont get me wrong, I love the series, but this is how I see it.

Well, they've seen things regarding the movie that we haven't. We should take it as a good sign.
I was quite shocked yesterday. I went into a book store and I come across a whole shelf full of The Eye of Minds. The reason why I was shocked is because The Maze Runner books are extremely hard to find in a book stores in Australia. You'd be lucky to come across more than one of the same book, yet The Eye of Minds had a whole shelf full.
Anyway, I now have The Eye of Minds and look forward to reading it soon.
In addition, O’Brien reveals that the extended amount of time will give the Maze Runner team more opportunity for press and promotion. “We get to do Comic-Com San Diego next year, which we wouldn’t have gotten to do otherwise, so that’ll be good too.”
Fox has already seen a rough cut of the full film and they have green lit the scorch trials. Let me repeat that. WE ARE 100% GETTING A SCORCH TRIALS. It’s already in production and they’re getting they casting set up.They said they already loved TMR and they want to do it correctly.
Some girl on Tumblr went to a book signing of The Eye of Minds and that's what James said about the film.
