A fast-paced and highly entertaining old-fashioned Slasher movie that, while has it flaws - if only the director spent a little more time to explore the family and the very interesting characters - turns out to be one of the surprises of the year so far. I had a blast.

Exactly, Brett! I'm so happy about this actually. And there is still Insidious 2, Carrie, Horns... Great year for horror, apparently :D

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
While highly derivative and extremely poorly written, City of Bones manages to deliver an exciting cinematic experience with some great action sequences. Unfortunately, it takes so many poor decisions regarding editing, music and sometimes acting, outshining nearly everything good the film has to offer. Such inconsistency is very apparent when after the great Hotel Dumort scene that even makes good use of a Zedd track, we're treated to a horrifyingly bad kissing scene inexplicably presented at the sound of a Demi Lovato song. There is some good acting too, especially from Robert Sheehan, Lena Headey, and, surprisingly, Lily Collins; but Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Geoffrey Gao also offer some of the worst performances of the year. The main problem is that the movie takes itself too seriously, making some of the horrible dialogue even worse. You can find some great mindless fun here, but the movie doesn't make it easy for you to turn your brain off. Instead, it urges you to use it - and that's what kills the film.

How is the direction? I think I'll see this because the director, Harald Zwart, is from the same country as me.

Harald Zwart does a good job, especially with the action set pieces. My only complaint would be his lack of work with some actors and excessive New York estabilishing shots. But bear in mind that he approves everything bad the movie has.

All I can say is that I wish Naomi Watts had won the Oscar, this film had one best picture, and Tom Holland was nominated.

I couldn't agree more. Although I really like Jennifer Lawrence performance in Silver Linnings Playbook, it wasn't a part that required a lot. Sometimes I feel that she was awarded because of the hype instead of the performance itself. Naomi Watts did a phenomenal job in a really challenging role. I would pick her instead of Jen anytime.

And the absence of Tom Holland from the nominees is just unforgivable. For the sake of comparison, Quvenzhané Wallis was nominated for a great performance but in my opinion, Tom was even better.

And honestly? I would replace Beasts of Southern Wild, Les Misérables or Lincoln for The Impossible. Such a magnificent and underlooked movie.

I just love how for such a grand-scale natural disaster, they focussed on such an intimate family story. This isn't a story about the tsunami at all, but the story of family love, human qualities and the ultimate struggle.

And I agree wholeheartedly, I love Jen, but Naomi Watts did such an incredible job.

I'm glad Tom Holland was recognized in this movie at other award shows. But he really should have been nominated for an Oscar.

Good thing is that Tom has two films on it's way, including How I Live Now, with Saoirse Ronan.
  • fawke83fawke83 Posts: 533 ✭✭✭
For me, the competition last year was simply too strong for Tom to enter, even with he was better than some there (I'm looking at you, Alan Arkin), there were other better than him that were snubed too.

Even though, he has a very promising future. Hope he gets more attention, I saw the trailer for How I Live Now and didn't enjoyed how much of a secondary character he was.

Anyway, if I was the Chaos Walking adaptation director, he would be my first-pick to play Todd Hewitt, hahah.

  • The year being "too strong" didn't stop Quvenzhané Wallis of being nominated.
  • fawke83fawke83 Posts: 533 ✭✭✭
So what? She did a marvelous and subdued acting, besides Marion Cottilard in Rust and Bone, I can't see another actress that could have snatched her spot.

Besides, I was talking about supporting actors, that section in special was really packed with potential nominees.

  • Besides Marion Cotillard, we also had Rachel Weisz and Helen Mirren. It was much busier year for Best Actress than Supporting Actor.

    Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox

I think DC Animated movies are on a roll. It's a shame we will never see the great stories from these Graphic Novels in any other form, but then again maybe that's their strength.

The Spectacular Now - 7.5/10. An emotional, engaging, well-written teen drama. Like The Perks of Being a Wallflower, this film is a wonderful addition to the collection of 21st century coming-of-age films. But above all, Miles Teller delivers such a fantastic performance that it elevates the film itself. A star is born in him.

The Thick of It (Series 1-4) - 9.5/10

I watched this simply because it was Peter Capaldi's most famous role, and I'm rather huffed I didn't discover this sooner. Terrifically funny, intelligently written and excellently performed, it makes you believe that government really is, out of the public eye, run by a bunch of panicky incompetents who resort to backstabbing, leaking information, and basically winging it in order to keep up appearances. The 'Office' like setup is used to a good effect, and the actors are so convincing you can't tell whether it's scripted or mostly improv. I really wish it had a longer run than the total of twenty three episodes, because it's one of the funniest, most witty shows I've ever seen.

    Frances Ha
A wonderfully realized story about finding yourself in life through the eyes of a spectacular title character, Frances Ha is not only surprisingly funny, but also tremendously entertaining. If you love dialogue-driven films you're in for a treat. A deep, beautiful and stylish triumph.

We're the Millers (Rawson Marshall Thurber, 2013)
The most noticeable thing about We're the Millers was the inconsistency of the humor. And guess what? That fact was explained when I saw four names under the screenplay credit. There are some funny and smart moments and many embarrassing and stupid ones. The film tries to get inspiration from the wave of R-rated movies and independent comedies and turns out being a forgettable mess. Kudos to William Poulter that has enough charisma to portray the only interesting character.

    Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

    Director: J.J. Abrams

Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch.

Wow, now that was a surprising blockbuster. I saw a lot of backslash against this movie by Trekkies, and honestly, I can't understand it. The movie was a very enjoyable fast-paced and thrilling ride, with a bunch of good acting from the main trio (Pine, Quinto and Cumberbatch, who I didn't found to be a bad villain). The twist about the villain didn't felt farfetched or something, like people said it was (although I never watched the show or the old movies, so I may be suspicious to take an opinion here), and the plot was kinda simple, but with good direction from J.J. Abrams, brilliant visual effects, and excellent action scenes, this was probably the best summer blockbuster I've seen this year. My only complaints come from some parts in the third act, which yes, unlike the one described above, did feel farfetched.

    The Heat
Packing incredible chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, The Heat is a successful comedy regarding its hilarious lines and scenes. Too bad it suffers from some very poor directing choices that hurt the overall pacing of the film, and also from a noticeably poor plot. It's still a blast to watch if you're willing to look past these very apparent flaws, that show how no matter how funny a comedy is, it still needs to be well directed and structured for it to be a triumph, like Paul Fieg's previous offering, Bridesmaids.

    Upside Down (Juan Solanas, 2012)
Visually, it might be one of the most dazzling, ambitious - and pretentious - movies in recent memory. It is a shame that Juan Solanas is a much better cinematographer than a scriptwriter. The film itself is a beautiful mess and never succeeds to develop its interesting themes. It is one of those cases were the filmmaker gets lost admiring his own geniality and doesn't know how to properly execute it.

    A Clockwork Orange

The dream I had last night had to have been directly related to the disturbed feelings I had after watching Stanley Kubrick's weirdest film... I felt like I was seeing a different interpretation of Ann Rynd's 'Atlas Shrugged' but from the flip side of good and evil. Overall I found the movie to be a great In terms of wrestling with people's moralities and control. I'll definitely have to watch it again.

  • Guys, some TV shows that I've been watching:

    image
    Ink Master Season 3
This season has been really interesting, but the competitors are awful. Tatu Baby is a disappointment. She is not performing well at all. I still have to watch last night episode. I have been disagreeing with basically 80% of the judges decision. Unbelievable that Josh hasn't been eliminated yet. Still, I love Ink Master. One of my favorite reality TV shows for sure.

    image
    The Apprentice UK Season 9
One of the most entertaining seasons of The Apprentice for sure. Still haven't finished watching it, so NO SPOILERS PLEASE! I have never seen so many awkward and embarrassing moments. Hahahaha. Fantastic.

    image
    Best Ink Season 2
It is basically an Ink Master rip-off. There are some better challenges, but the judges and the editing are awful. Still, I'm having fun watching it while waiting for Ink Master episodes. :)

    Drinking Buddies
Always surprising, Drinking Buddies delivers such a rich experience that you almost overlook some of its pacing flaws. Beautifully real characters with great improvised dialogue, and a story that's never predictable, resulting in a brilliant conclusion that will get you thinking for long after the movie. For a little film that presents itself as a comedy, having such effect on the viewer is a huge surprise.

    Rise of the Guardians

With such beautiful animated imagery, an ensemble of well cast voices which go along with lovable characters, Rise of the Guardians does not falter and is a fine achievement. It's fast paced, the story is fun and the music by Alexandre Desplat lifts the whole movie immensely. Definitely one of my favourite animation films of the past few years.

    Jobs
Absurdly poor in both structure and direction, Jobs represents the worst that biopics can offer, with bad choices all around making this a failure of unbelievable proportions. Ashton Kutcher proves physical resemblance is not enough to carry a lead performance in a biography - he tries hard, but he's way too weak of an actor. The script exaggerates in a feature most movies would be praise-worthy for having: not being excessively ditactic, which the scriptwriter understands as taking away important chunks of information between scenes, driving the audience clueless in many situations. Not to mention the absolutely awful characterization, pace and stylistic choices. This is one of the worst movies I've seen this year.

    You're Next

I have not enjoyed a horror film this much for a very long time; this is horror at its peak. You're Next avoids the endless number of cliche scares and typical storylines and makes something very memorable out of what it is. It's intelligent, well crafted and has a story, unlike many horror films, that has great depth. Forget about the conventional horror protagonists who are normally weak and extremely vulnerable, this movie has side stepped all of that and created a worthy piece of horror cinema that should stand out from the rest.

    Trance (2013)

    Director: Danny Boyle

Cast: James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, Vincent Cassel

Well, a return for Danny Boyle to british-style crime thrillers is always welcome, and this one couldn't be less better. Although it has a interesting beginning, it kinda slows down after, and you feel lost with everything that's happening and the lack of info about some scenes. But, halfway through the film, you start to piece together the puzzle, and then, it becomes a non-stop twisty and motherfuckin crazy trippy crime flick, with the plot throwing surprises at you at every corner. The ending is surprising to say the least. The direction is phenomenal (which is usual, for Danny Boyle), the acting from the three leads is excellent, and the soundtrack is really neat, mixing eletronic, indie rock and trip-hop through a bunch of top-notch artists, such as Unkle and Moby.

Now, if the plot didn't have some contrivances, it could well be one of the best films of the year.

    Now You See Me
Despite a completely idiotic plot, Now You See Me still manages to be an absolute blast to watch, featuring wonderful chemistry among the main cast, well executed action sequences (the fight scene with Mark Ruffalo and Dave Franco is the highlight) and a pitch perfect pace, making this an undeniable crowd pleaser that proves good direction can still save a bad script and deliver some good mindless fun.

    The East
While noticeably different than what its advertisement made it to be, The East is still a remarkable conspiracy story with an incredibly human touch - enhanced by great performances from the cast (especially Alexander Skarsgard and Ellen Page). Very interesting cinematography, and also great direction and editing, even though there are some unnecessary scenes and plot devices. It's a movie that will make you think after it's done, and that's something to praise.

    Disconnect
An absolutely riveting experience that's both socially relevant and emocionally intense, Disconnect packs an amazing ensemble cast delivering great performances all around, though Jason Bateman is the highlight, excellent performance; also props to Andrea Risenborough, Frank Grillo and Haley Ramm. It's also beautifully shot and wonderfully put together: there's a scene in the climax that will make your jaw drop. There is a sort of dramatic contrast between the three stories, one being stronger than the other, but that doesn't stop this from being an absolute gem.
