It is not going to win any new fans, which obviously doesn't point to box office success; but ask Adri if it was ever going to be a real hit, and you'll probably hear something back like "I am a fan, and this was made for the fans"
We'll have to wait and see, but in my opinion, looking at the budget, this will have a similar total to what Percy Jackson makes. It will never be a hit beyond that point, but that isn't the point of this or that franchise.
Lord Stafford.
Exactly what James said It's for fans so I like it. I enjoyed the film a lot. I'm not gonna go into technical stuff 'cause I really don't care. The book I enjoyed reading became a movie and that's not enough for me.
If Potter had failed at the box office and with the critics, would we care? No, as fans, we stand by our series no matter what.
I really liked it. Sure, some of the CGI was bad (but being the first movie in a fantasy series you come to expect that) but I found it really enjoyable. I hope they continue to make them.
I was going to watch this today. But you now what? After reading the reviews I'll wait to watch at home. It is a horror move day! I will watch the highly praised You're Next instead.
Saw it last night.... I actually thought it was a really good movie. There was a lot more action than i remembered in the book, but i read it a while ago, so i might not be remembering it right. I didn't think they changed that much from the book, which was good. However, the entire movie I was distracted by the fact that simon was way hotter than jace, which was not how it was supposed to be and made me want her to choose simon. Other than that (which is really a minor detail) i thought it was really good, although it would have been hard to understand if i hadn't read the series.

Sony's PG-13 rated "Mortal Instruments" brought in $3.1 million Friday from 2,835 locations. That puts it on track for a soft $13 million since its Wednesday opening and means it will be the third film this year to target the "Twilight” crowd and come up short. "Beautiful Creatures” and "The Host” misfired earlier.
Not surprising? Of course it is surprising. The books have a huge fanbase (probably, next to Divergent, is one of the recent biggest ones). Had a huge marketing campaign (I lost track of how many times I saw trailers, ads, promotion at book stores, comic con panels). Despite Catching Fire, it was supposed to be one of the most important YA adaptations to be released this year. So yes... It is surprising.
Yeah right. When most of the websites were predicting something around U$20M and now they are reporting that it was below the studio expectations, a random guy disagrees with all of the industry experts opinion and says that it is not surprising. lol
Well, I don't know which places you go to Rick (since, you know...we live in DIFFERENT countries) but I barely saw any marketing for this movie. I've seen only like 1 or 2 trailers on television and there are no banners like when THG was coming out. So no, I wouldnt be surprised if this movie failed.
I have a theory of mine that could explain the actual failure that Mortal Instruments might be.
Audiences may be kind of running from potential YA franchises that uses love themes. See Hunger Games for example: yes, there is love in it, but the supposed love never even appeared in any of the marketing material. Now in Beautiful Creatures, TMI and The Host, they had thriller, action, mystery, but they always showed, in one way or another, some infatuation and/or love between two characters in their marketing material. This kind of thing usually put people to dismiss them as "another Twilight", and I say this with personal experience (I saw friends of mine see only the trailer for The Mortal Instruments and have the same reaction I described).
I don't know if this might be the case, could have to do with YA adaptations that involve werewolves/witches/vampires, but I have a good feeling it will be proved right or wrong if next year, Divergent and Maze Runner succeed, while Vampire Academy flops.
Oh yeah, there is Ender's Game too. That movie is kind of a question mark, since the marketing on it has been very small so far. But I bet it might make better than any YA-franchise-wannabe so far.
Quaalude fight: because drunk fight is too mainstream.
I agree with @fawke83 the mazerunner and divergent appeal to both boys and girls, because of the action in them. The only boys that go to see city of bones and beautiful creatures are the ones dragged on dates. That makes the fan base much larger for the dystopian books than the more fantasy romance types.

Woow Henrick you need to chill....a studios prediction is exactly that. You cant control what people would expect each is different if richard said he had low expectations you`ll have to trust him why would he lie?
Maybe people realized that this is a HP fanfiction disguised as a book. Beautiful Creatures was a box office failure because people we're sick of supernatural romances. The Host, because it was Stephenie Meyer, even though it had superior actors than the Twilight films.
Definitely looks like Catching Fire will be the biggest YA sucess of the year.
I agree with everything that Fawkes mentioned, because even though I'm a girl, I prefer action/fantasy movies like the Hunger Games than movies like TMI. In fact, I saw a trailer for both Beautiful Creatures and TMI and my reaction was exactly as fawks predicted therefore putting me off those two movies.
August 20 "They were very good about asking for my input," Clare tells The Hollywood Reporter of the filmmakers, including director Harald Zwart, revealing that she was also "really involved" in casting the project. [...] Zwart (The Karate Kid) says he kept Clare on "speed dial" during production. [...] "I loved having her around because she's the one who thought of it all, obviously," Zwart tells THR. "I remember on one of the last takes we did, it was like, 'Oh, the line doesn't feel right' and both Lily and Jamie were like, 'There's something …'" Cue Clare, who woke up to answer a late night phone call from the director and saved the scene. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/mortal-instruments-how-author-cassandra-609043

What a hypocrite! Just when the movie started to look like a box office bomb she threw the blame into the filmmakers!
Anyway, this is another case of the critics' consensus dramatically affecting the film's performance. The general audience obviously craves for some new YA adaptation material, but they'll only leave their homes to watch something they'll be sure to be worth it. When a day before release, the critics absolutely steamrolled over the movie delivering an RT score worse than any Twilight film, people backed out. That's the challenge of the latest YA adaptations: to deliver something of quality in relation to the book, but also a movie that stands on its own. The Maze Runner and Divergent have tremendous chances of being successful, but also have a huge chance of being failures, it all depends on how they'll affect the critics.
There is nothing to be scared for Maze Runner, the movie has a very broad thematic, appeals to both boys and girls. It's all up to the quality of the adaptation, in the end. But I'm betting it will do pretty well.
@mattStrelow, what you said could be a significant influence too. After all, Hunger Games fared very well with critics.
Quaalude fight: because drunk fight is too mainstream.
@fawke83 is right, The Maze Runner appeals to everyone, but still could fail if it turns out to be poorly written and/or overall weak. It has a huge advantage of being a YA adaptation with a male protagonist, something that hasn't happened very often (Beautiful Creatures was marketed with Lena being indicated as the protagonist/narrator).
lol, how pathetic. And why she doesn't confess that her books are actually HP fanfictions?
Why are you saying her books are HP fanfictions? I mean, I haven't read them either but that's not the reason I'm not attracted to the franchise, its actually because I'm not really into romance. From what I've read what the books are about and the movie trailers I've seen, it doesn't look like an HP fanfic at all.

She basically writes fanfictions xD The Mortal Instruments is roughly based on her HP fanfiction that's why Jace is fanfic Draco Malfoy in leather pants.
Even her Infernal Devices is kinda based on the Tale of the Two Cities and I read that one of her upcoming series which is currently called 'TLH' is based on Great Expectations.
I think what drew me to the series is the 'coolish' idea of Shadowhunters and the fact that it's like HP fanfiction xD I've read the Draco Trilogy in high school and it was something that's really hard to find before. It was banned/taken down from ff.net

:O
This makes me worried for Maze Runner but not much, because Maze Runner is actually awesome
After this one, I'm going to bed.
