Box office doesn't mean quality in a film. Most of films that people treat as cult films in this days we're box office failures and had terrible reviews back then. And last year nobody thought that THG was going to be a success, or that the other books we're going to be adapted. But it did, because it has a fanbase, it has people who has read the books or those who wants to see the films.
No one is talking about quality here. Phenomenon is not quality. Phenomenon is attached to popularity.
As Ches mentioned, the rest of the world couldn't care less about THG. BoxOffice numbers were totally inexpressive, people still don't talk about it and besides the fan base, nobody really cared about the trailer that premiered yesterday. The Hunger Games is not a pop culture symbol or a cultural reference. At least yet.
I think you'll find that you don't know "the rest of the world" and neither do I, but the trailer crashed Facebook last night, and Twitter is still going crazy over it. The USA isn't the be all and end of, so I don't want to hear you saying that this was all down to them. Just watch it rake in far more than it did last time, and not just in the US.
How someone can put The Hunger Games besides Harry Potter, in phenomenon terms, will never be something that I'll understand. And it's not because it's The Hunger Games. For example, as crazy as I am about The Maze Runner, I would NEVER put in the same level as Harry Potter.
I never put it with Potter in terms of quality and endurance. It won't last for as long as Potter, certainly. Though, here's the thing: Potter was an example. Both are remarkable, and both are going to last.
One more thing. 283 millions in worldwide box office for a 78 million dolars film is anything but a failure. It's 80 millions more than the foreign gross of the first Twilight film. And Twilight was much more known than THG before the first film came out. And it had a female audience, unlike THG which it has bole male and female audiences.

Yony, I'm not saying it was a failure. I'm saying those numbers don't represent a phenomenon. I know how you guys love THG, but you gotta be rational sometimes. 283 million is a reasonable number, not enough to turn it into a phenomenon. As I said, THG might become one, but it still not there.
Isn't it actually considered a success when a film is able to double its budget in box office results, making a profit? That isn't even the full amount; regardless, if Potter had made bugger all, it would have still been a phenomenon. Would anyone care to guess why, before I give it away? No? Because of the fans. Potter was and would have been a phenomenon even without the movies, because of the fans, so why not this? I see the books everywhere, and I see the DVD/Blu-ray for the first film still sitting on chart shelves. Is it a ploy? No, I'd say it's more due to the popularity of the franchise.
THG is definitely a phenomenon in the USA, everyone knows what it is.
Whether it will keep that status has remained to be seen, Twilight seemed to be one as much as we hated it but dissolved into a fad.
I wouldn't call it a phenomenon on the level of Potter, not even close, but it's still insanely popular in the States. I can't speak for elsewhere though.
The point of The Hunger Games is the social message that Collins wrote. It was never supposed to be the next big phenomenon. You don't have such a great actors like Donald Sutherland and Phillip Seymour Hoffman playing in the films for being a phenomenon, but because they know what's the real point of the books.

The more I watch the trailer the more excited I am.
I almost instantly see the improvement. I am VERY glad Lawrence is taking the direction of showing views outside of Katniss, at least it seems to be. Something obviously that was missing in Mockingjay was the actual war, so what started in THG with District 11 looks to be continued and then hopefully in Mockingjay we get the war that never happened in the book.
When I rewatched THG recently I understood what people meant by lack of art direction. It did seem bland. I instantly see an improvement. It might be because it's a trailer so colors are enhanced and whatnot, but it looks very good, visuals seem instantly improved cough chariot fire cough any fire in the movie cough.
And I'd like to thank Lionsgate in advance - the video may receive tons of thumbs down on youtube from idiots going "WHERE ARE THE GAMES THIS TRAILER SUX LULZ THG IS POOP TWILIGHT" but seriously I can't help but appreciate it because I KNOW I'd spoil myself if they released stuff, but it looks like they are sticking hard to the "we won't release shit from the actual games" and I like that.

THIS! I agree completely. I'm so happy to see that, the movie looks to be much better regarding it's visuals!!
That's true about the roits we are seeing. It started with District 11 in THG movie. The ones in this movie seem bigger. That means, naturally, they will have to show even more during Mockingjay. And not just the scenes in District 8 and 2, but full out war.
(regarding international box office) I wouldn't say it did "badly" worldwide because of bad advertising. It was crazily shoved into people's faces in most countries, the issue is that the book trilogy hadn't settled itself yet. Most people I know that are now all over the books only watched THG on DVD, so I'm pretty sure CF will do much better, though still not huge numbers like $800M WW not including Domestic.
hahaha I so knew someone going to say that! I know he`s Australian but I meant in general.. I would like to have a accent and if I can have one, it would be a British one :P
Note to myself : Next time I have to write more in details for people to understand me :P
For example.. The Hunger Games had a very big marketing campaign in Brazil and the distributor did a very great job over there. Still, the movie performance was one of the most disappointing of the years.
It was a relatively low $10 million income though it did better than both first HP and Twilight installments over here (both taking $9 million and $6 million respectively), but that can't get even close to DH2 and BD2's respective $35 million and $54 million grosses.

Matt you can't even compare them because of inflation.
Nice:D Wish we were in the same city! No one here never want to go to midnight premiere with me so I end up not going. Only for the Dark Knight Rises I went alone. I had to see it first lol :P and my first experience
I could easily fly to Canada. if I can jet set all over the world to see Britney Spears on tour I can easily go to Toronto to meet up with a fellow HPFER

You're right, I didn't take it into consideration, though Twilight came 4 years ago so it's not much of a gap
