Yeah I just don't see the point in this site anymore for me...It's been fun HPF but this is all it is anymore. It's time for me to hit the old dusty trail. I wish you the best but for this time it's for good. Take Care everyone
That's a really tough choice, Sami. A very eclectic year, indeed. And some great movies, actually. It's hard to pic the best one because every movie has a different approach and suggest different things. And, in the end, they are not comparable. Although, I would say that my favorite ones were, for sure, Django Unchained, Argo, Amour and Silver Linings Playbook. But It's really hard to pick the best one. I would end up choosing Django or Argo, at this moment.
And just to illustrate how eclectic this year is, we have:
- A biopic - A musical - An independent drama - An "indie" dramedy - A fantasy/adventure - A foreign drama - A western/adventure/action satire - Two political thrillers
There're movies for all tastes. I think people can't complain about the nominees this year
It really makes no sense to have a foreign film nominated not only in the respective category, but also in the BP category. It gives it a bigger advantage at winning a prestigious award than all of the other Best Foreign Language Film nominees. Choose one or the other. It's just as crazy as having an animated movie nominated in the BP and Best Animated categories. There are categories for a reason.
A better complaint would be the lack of genre categories for things like comedy, horror, and perhaps science fiction and fantasy. Of course you can use LotR and Avatar as negations of needing a sci-fi and fantasy category. You can also explain away the need for those categories as there are very few quality movies each year that would fit them.
Yes, I just argued with myself to refute the notion that I'd like to see genre categories.

So Crucify the ego, before it's far too late, to leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical. And you will come to find that we are all one mind, capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.

We need to create an Idea Forum where anything can be talked about with specifics on creativity of course..

I'm watching Zero Dark Thirty tonight, and decided to save Django and Silver Linings to watch in theaters. I'm watching Django next week as it didn't come to my theater yet but I'm arriving in Brasília next Saturday, so I'll be able to wacth it; and Silver Linings comes to Brazil on February 1st. Excited!
im happy to say ive never participated in piracy. im too lazy to download movies illegally and i have enough money to be able to see all the movies i want in theatres even if the price of a ticket is 10.75
I hope Zero Dark Shitty doesn't win much at all. When you read an account of one of the person who killed Bin Laden, you'll realize what a hack Bigelow is. Christ, what a god-awful movie.
It's too bad she's such a hack she couldn't say anything meaningful about the war other than the bullshit at the end. Of course the critics lapped it up without any critical thought.

I'm sure you have no qualms in excusing the blatant and immoral propagandizing bullshit in the movie, Henrick. You're a filmmaker, after all.

Okay here are mine. Only Best Picture film I haven't seen is Lincoln. I'll exclude some of the technical categories or ones where I haven't seen enough of the films to have an opinion or .
Best Picture - For me, Django Unchained was the most entertaining but I know that won't win so I hope Argo wins it. Silver Linings Playbook would be a great too. Best Director - I'd be happy with Ang Lee or David O Russel for this one. Best Actor - Daniel Day Lewis will probably win this, but I'd love to see Hugh Jackman win it (because he's Australian), Bradley Cooper would definitely be a deserved winner of this too. Best Actress - Jennifer Lawrence was so much better than Jessica Chastain in my opinion so I hope Jennifer wins, I think she will. Best Supporting Actor - Definitely rooting for Christoph Waltz in this one. Best Supporting Actress - Anne Hathaway has got it in the bag. Cinematography - Django Unchained or Life of Pi Best Film Editing - Zero Dark Thirty Best Makeup and Hairstyling - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Best Original Song - Skyfall - Adele Best Production Design - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Best Visual Effects - Life of Pi Best Adapted Screenplay - Silver Linings Playbook Best Original Screenplay - Django Unchained
I saw Les Mis last wekeend. It was fantastic! For me the cinematography is fucking stunning, I think it should win, and also the costume and production design are marvelous Hathway. Im applauding, yeah, she has it in the bag, and very well deserved, she was terrific!
For me, the cinematography of Les Mis is mediocre. Let's remember that Cinematography is not only lighting, guys! All camera movements/shots, frame options is also cinemtography. And that was one of the things that bothered me the most. The huge amount of close-up's and lack of wide shots totally ruined all of the lighting work.

Same guy complaining he should have special treatment and get full pension before his 20 years?
Henrick, I refered precisely to the use of camera in many scenes hehe I think Les Mis has some awesome shots and angles that give the efect wanted. I agree about Javert´s suicide, the shot of javert´s feet give you a sense of foreshadowing wich to me was very eerie, and when he finally jumps, it gives the impact it needed.
Also, the first shot of the ship is simply stunning, and then the camera moves towards until facing the line of prisoners pulling it, it or the camera movementI right after the prologue, you know the one when we see him throwing the paper away, we see the paper flying out and the awesome shot of the top of the hill he´s in, and then the piece of papers falls down, the scenes changes to the next period of time in fantines story while the camera moves down to face the street. That was brilliant use of camera to means of narration. I loved that one as well. I believe the director also had a great eye for using the score of the film to highlight the cinematopraphy (the score isnt original of course, but if you see it again some time, take note of the scenes I mentioned, and see how the cinematography sinc with score is brilliantly executed, like, in many scenes the drastic changes in camera angles or directions are in the exact notes that hilight them, an example of this is this last scene I mentioned) So yeah, I definitely didnt mean just colour.
So there is a contest at work and I filled out a ballot with my predictions-

So I hope I got most of them right lol.
This sounds about right. I do think Christoph Waltz has a chance at Supporting Actor, Zero Dark Thirty has a shot at Editing and Silver Linings Playbook has a chance at Adapted Screenplay though.

Half way there, only 4 more Best Picture nominated films to watch!
Awesome I only need two more and Silver Linings will be scratched off soon!
