They're stupid because it was obvious that the book was going to be badly recieved for biased people expecting another HP, no matter if the book is bad or good on it's own. J.K. herself predicted it.
What Yony said. People who're disappointed are probably so because they wanted something on the lines of Harry Potter.
The Casual Vacancy is not an easy read. But its extremelyyyy well written. Its not one of those murder-mystery books you'll pick up and finish off in a day. It moves slowly and so I've been reading a few chapters everyday and I love it. And I cannot keep reminding myself that its written by Rowling even if I want to because the writing style is SO different from Harry Potter.
You guys should give this book a chance before jumping to conclusions only because its so different from what JKR's done till now. Who the author is and what he/she's done until now should not even be a matter of concern. Its the content that should matter, and TCV is an extremely well-knit story in a world as detailed as The Shire and characters as complex as in books like The Hard Times. Its said to feel like a modern classic and it does. Its just not another Harry Potter, not even close.
So you guys are basically saying that all people out there are wrong and stupid and that the book is a masterpiece?
I haven't read yet. I will. But I think it is kinda funny to say that people are stupid (including press, specialized opinions) for not liking a book.
And no. No one knew if the book was going to be well-received or bad receive. Do you think this is a conspiracy theory? People just hate things for the sake of hating? "Let's all hate new J.K. novel because is not similar to Harry Potter". Seriously? Do you really prefer to believe in something like that instead of believing that people just didn't enjoy?
Still, I repeat what I said: I doubt that you would be interested in the book if it wasn't written by J.K. Rowling.
I love J.K. Rowling. She was responsible for changing my childhood and having the best moments in my entire life. But I will have the common sense of knowing what is good or bad. The way some people act around here is like... "If J.K. shits on my bed, I will make a statue of the poop". It's not like that, sorry. And no. People are not stupid by not liking the book. You are stupid by saying that, actually.
And just tonight... The movie went from 3.53 to 3.51 on Good Reads. And read some reviews over there. Most of them have a point and you'll see that people are actually not that stupid.
I still don't understand why people give so much importance, time and attention to other people's opinions. In the end, the only one that really counts is your own.
By the way, I've been reading the book for the past couple of days, and I think it's brilliant. It's very well written and there are some very strong characters.
Sure, what motivated me to read TCV was the fact that Jo wrote it, but I don't see anything wrong with that. I'm a massive fan of her previous work, so I was obviously going to read this.
I also don't see how ratings are such a fuss. Sure they're fun to speculate about and all, but like Godric said, the only opinion that matters is your own. I haven't read it yet, but I'm sure the book will be just great. Like Rick also said, a lot of readers are Harry Potter readers, and they probably just weren't expecting something of the sort. That being said, I don't want to seem like I'm making an excuse for J.K.--for all I know, the book could be horrible and boring. But I haven't read it yet.
If your own opinion was just what mattered, there wouldn't be websites like IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, MetaCritic, social networks, forums and etc. The human being will always take an consider other people's opinion. It's all about expectations. Being impartial, nowadays, is basically impossible.
I think first that each people should read it before claim it's bad or not, the best reveiw of something is yours own
Second i think the book have bad reveiw because, even JK Rowling & her editors have repeat and repeat and repeat that will not be a HP one, lot of people have be disappointed that not an HP style book !
For me it's a really realy good story, i have the impress to be part of Padford community, want to know more about the character, i laugh, i cry (omg so much) i was shock etc... So it's a really good story written by a really good storyteller
After i can understand that for those who grown with HP that the book not pleased but they have to let JK Rowling be the storyteller she is. She can't be for ever just the potterhead queen !
I think I'll just go to a local book store like Bruna. I have to stop buying though, I also want TDKR and TASM blurays and also bought the iPhone 5. Hope the lidl pays well this month :P.
For one, I never go to the websites Rick mentioned. I don't care other people's opinion on a book or a movie. I rather judge things based on my beliefs. As for TCV, I think its a really good book so far. I don't like politics or sex related things, but Jo had wrote it in a way that its not dull for me to read. I'm not an expert in books, but I think she's doing a fantastic job with this one. I haven't finished reading it, but its because of school not because of its content.
I think it's rather limiting if you strive for not caring about other people's opinions after you have formed your own opinion individually. I love to share my own opinions and back them up, but I also find it interesting to hear other perspectives and most importantly the reasoning behind it. Although my overall opinions rarely change, I'm open enough to re-consider certain aspects and look at things differently when someone brings up good points. As Henrick pointed out, humans do care about other people's opinions. That's why we have forums. We are social creatures after all.
As for the consensus of The Casual Vacancy, it's gotten mixed reviews; some love it, others think it's incredibly dull, but most critics seem to find it decent, albeit not outstanding.
$23 isn't that much for a new book in my opinion, but if you think it wasn't worth the money, then be it. Your opinion about the book seems to be same as the general consensus.
In Good Reads is INCREDIBLY low. For your idea, The Hunger Games has 4.48, Mockingjay has 4.04. Any book that scores lower than 3.7 in Good Reads has a low rating. Twilight has 3.6
I just think it's funny. If the book received good reviews and people were loving it, everybody would be celebrating (as we did when the first reviews for DH2 started to arrive). It's very convenient to say that you don't care about reviews when they don't agree with your opinion lol

If Twilight has a higher score than TCV i really questions the sites credibility. I expect TCV to be no masterpiece (but still a decent/good book) but it can't be, in no single way, worse than Twilight.
I doubt that you would be interested in the book if it wasn't written by J.K. Rowling.
True, I wouldn't have picked the book up if it wasn't written by JKR. But my opinion of the book isn't based off the fact that JKR's the author. As I said, its hard to even keep reminding yourself that she's the author because its such a different style.
I found it mildly entertaining with realistically drawn characters (I grew up with Krystal Weedon's, Andrew's, and Gaia's), and I think she painted an accurate picture of modern British council estates with The Fields. It was nothing special, certainly no masterpiece, and it's only as big as it is due to the name attached to it. But worth a read if you're in to that kind of thing. Btw Hogwarts doesn't even show up until the penultimate segment and by then it feels tacked on and redundant, Dumbledore's cameo was unnecessary too imo.

Before I fork out the money to read this, I'd like to know something. As someone who read half of the potter books during the summer and detested the writing style, will I detest it here as well?

So Crucify the ego, before it's far too late, to leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical. And you will come to find that we are all one mind, capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.

Give it a miss, lol.
I am finding it hard to continue reading, and I am still in the early parts of the book. It gets desperately dull at a lot of places. Never liked books which require me to make an outrageous effort to turn the pages-page after page after page. Not to forget that it does get confusing also, with so many characters.
I don't know, guys. I'm considering not reading it. Specially because it is really expensive. From all comments and reactions, it might not be worth the money.
Hm...I don't think you should let the reviews bog you down. Obviously they must give some sort of indication, but I still say read it for yourself and give your own judgment. If you're worried about the price, hopefully they'll put it on sale soon for Black Friday.

As for the blurays, it'll probably still take a year before it will reach that price.
