The forum is now cluttered, ugly, and the new buttons are going to do nothing but take away from discussion.

Now instead of disagreeing or agreeing with something, I have a button that can express that. Who needs to even post opinions anymore?

It's a bit early to tell imo. We'll see how things turns out. I like the forum update.

The new buttons are very confusing, I guess I'll have to get used to them...

    I actually love them :p

The buttons aren't good, but it fuglies the threads up pretty bad. I have signatures turned off but I get a bit sick to my stomach thinking about what it would look like otherwise.

It's just a bunch of unnecessary garbage that gives people a window of opportunity to not comment at all, but rather click a button to express how they feel about a post. Even if this wasn't abused, which it sadly already has been, it has still did nothing but clutter the board with useless nonsense.
  • RyGuyRyGuy Posts: 7,837 mod
I like them a lot tbh. I think its got a good scope of variety and if someone really likes or dislikes something then that gives them the option of voicing their opinion with a reply. As for what the new set of buttons says, I think its representational of how people can react to something. It gives people the chance to give their thoughts on something whether they feel it is off-topic, Insightful, Ludicrous, Awesome, or Funny. For the people that dont feel a reply is necessary it gives them the opportunity to still voice their thoughts, just not with a reply. Thats why I like them. :)>-

Maybe, but it's not the layouts fault that some people won't comment anymore. It's their own decision.

Except they're not voicing their thoughts. The whole point of a message board is discussion. For the record, I don't think that someone should have to make it public that they think a post is funny or WTF or whatever. I've seen a lot of funny posts that made me giggle, for better or for worse, but I didn't feel the need to make a useless comment.

Also, they're a bit vague. For instance if I say something, and someone clicks LOL or whatever (ugh) I'm not sure if they're laughing with me or laughing at me. It's convoluted, visually distracting, and pointless.

Which is kind of depressing, but if you don't even have the effort to type something out, why even bother being on a forum?

See? It's happening right here and now. Pretty obnoxious.

I'm not going to lie, with the introduction of all these new fancy-shmancy features Ive seen more activity and active members on here than I have in months. I think its being embraced very well. Its too early to tell though. Lets see how it all plays out. :)>-

I have to agree with you on that one.

Honestly, I really hate the new buttons. Like Brandon said, the forum is now cluttered in ugly IMO.

Which pretty much says it all about certain posters. Look, I'm not even trying to make it into a big deal, and I'm not an anal person-- it's just a message board-- but so far it's slightly hindering thoughtful discussion and again, it looks horrible. A message forum should strive to be coherent and visually appealing with no clutter. This stuff is very antagonistic to that philosophy.
  • JoshieJoshie Posts: 4,762 ✭✭✭✭✭
But I really like the effort put into them...
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think it saves the trouble of people posting comments that just say LOL or like few worded posts. I think it opens it up for more posts.

I actually wish it would go back to the agree/disagree buttons instead of insightful and wtf. The agree/disagree was real good because if someone agreed, you would know, and if they disagreed, you could be all like "oh hey @Bane, what makes you disagree with this" and conversation can start

I don't see how they're obnoxious at all. In fact, I've seen new life breathed into the forum over the past 24 hours that I haven't seen in months. Like others above have said, let it all play out. You'll get used to it just like we did with the Like button.

The like button is horrible too. Anyway I've stated my peace. People are going to agree or disagree, whatever but as a sometimes active member I'm not incredibly thrilled by it.

I think it's cooler. That and the polls. Tell me the last time you say 30+ people online, even if many were guests? Guests will see it and want to join IMO
  • AllStar87AllStar87 Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭
I really like the buttons but down the road I could see it being what Bane has just said. The LOL's are normally half the comments you see on HPF so there won't be alot of posts.

So far most of these arguments seem to cater to the notion of quantity over quality. I don't care if there's 30,000 fucking people on here, if only 8 people are actually making worthwhile contributions it doesn't matter.
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
Actually, my argument was catered to quality. You'll have less posts of people going "LOL" or shit like that with one-sentence answers and might respond back with actual posts because their little one-liner can be said through these buttons.
  • aaronaaron Posts: 20,950 mod
Sure quality matters, they go hand in hand in a forum. But activity and change is good, it spices things up.

  • BaneBane Posts: 9,869 ✭✭✭✭✭
If you have a bunch of activity just because of new buttons, what you're dealing with is a bunch of people hitting the site so they can press buttons instead of talk, and the more that happens the more cluttered it is. Again, they serve zero purpose and go against the entire point of a message board. If people want to converse, they need to type something out instead of just having an easy button to press.

And like I said, it's sometimes impossible to tell what people truly actually mean when they press the "THIS IS FUNNY LOL" button, for example.
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
*shrug* I just don't see it as big of a deal

Then perhaps that should be enforced? Perhaps discourage people from just making one-liner posts? It's fine to think a post is funny, but when I think a post is funny enough to comment on, I will post something like:

"Haha, yeah, I completely agree. The script definitely needed more work and that particular moment was just terrible, so you're spot on."

This way, I let that person know that I found their comment to be amusing without just typing LOL or whatever.

    I don't think it's a big deal.
&Last night was a great night, collectively, for the forum. Everyone seemed to be having fun.

Everyone has his unique way to express themself.

I like the new layout because it gives this forum a fresh feel. Sometimes things have to change so it can grow. This also counts for a message board imo.

For instance, my opening post has a bunch of buttons underneath it now and I don't care enough to take the time to hover over each one to see who thought what about my post. Also, most of them don't even make any sense. I just got a bunch of LOL's and WTF's-- how the hell does that make anything better at all? How does that contribute anything?
  • SarahElizabeth!SarahElizabeth! Posts: 5,265 ✭✭✭✭
And people are still posting. Some people even more right now.

Anyway, I'm just one guy, I don't have the power to change anything, and if people are having fun with it, that's cool but you'll probably see even less of me around these parts.
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,869 ✭✭✭✭✭
Guys, I have earned five LOL badges! And "we like that!" How cool!

I have the exact same feeling. Also it seems like a lot more people are visiting the site again. (29 people at the moment, quite good for a message board about harry potter if you ask me).

Sure. But doing both is pointless and people aren't going to do that every single time. I've already seen a shitload of that.

Please remove all this new crap. It's cluttered, and makes the forum look cheap, messy and try-hard.

I think the new buttons are great..better than just like buttons. And the awesomest one is 'wtf' button now u can really press it. So fucking cool. Why do u hate it?
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,869 ✭✭✭✭✭
I haven't explained why I dislike it or anything. I really should do that next time before even thinking about making a thread expressing my concerns.

And G.G. to be fair, you think everything is flawless. :p

I was fine with the like button. Now the only option we have is Awesome. Well, what if I like something, but don't necessarily think it's awesome?

I loved it. Fresh air to the forum. It has been a while that the forum hasn't been this busy; I loved it :D

From what I've noticed almost every time something new is added to the forum someone hates it. Change can be a good thing if you give it time to catch on. It just started, once people get tired of pressing the buttons after every comment that a person posts it may end up being more meaningful. I think it boils down to people not liking change. Personally, I like seeing if someone likes or dislikes my comments and I also like that we don't have to post LOL every time we find something funny. Now we can just press the button and everyone knows that we found that post funny.

These new buttons are just contributing to turn HPF into a popularity contest. The like button was alright, but "WTF" and "LOL" are just going to spread hate about posts people disagree with. Say you post an insightful review which is negative. My guess is it will garner more "WTF" than "insightful" clicks from people disagreeing. That said, I'd take that as a compliment personally that I would be doing something right...

That's why I wish they stuck with: Agree, Disagree, & Like. Now I honestly don't know what to click!
