    YES!

Love this franchise and Rise of the Planet of the Apes was great. Can't wait :D

It was definitely an unexpected summer treat and I can't wait for the sequel. Looks like summer 2014 is going to be another sequel-filled summer.

Definitely passing on this one. The last one was wholly mediocre with a lot of talent wasted on pointless monkeys.

Yeah, hopefully this, Pirates 5, Captain America 2, and what else?
Note to self: Don't bother going to the cinema summer 2014.

Haha, seriously. I mean I'm sure there are unannounced things that will actually be great for that year, but those ain't it!

The Casual Vacancy, directed by David Yates and penned by Michael Goldenberg.

I would normally be excited for Pirates of the Caribbean as I loved the first three, but Stranger Tides was so bad that it killed the entire franchise ala Spider-man 3.

Did I feel like Pirates4 wasn't very well made? Yes. Neither is the Last Airbender. I still enjoyed them a lot.

I thought On Stranger Tides was just incredibly boring, horribly paced, had lackluster action scenes and bland new characters.

Last Airbender was horribly acted but I liked the story and the way that Shyamalan shot everything at the end of the movie.

See I didn't even think it came remotely close to being as fun as the first three. I'm completely against everyone that thought 2 and 3 were bad. I loved them. I loved the story and the action was fucking incredible. The Kraken was amazing and At World's End had some spectacular setpieces and in general had a great payoff and bittersweet ending.

Stranger Tides had... this kind of okay mermaid scene, and a clusterfuck of a final battle in the fountain chamber involving tons of characters you don't give a shit about. At World's End's final battle intercut with many likable characters. It actually mattered. The stakes were high. There were no stakes in the fourth film. Also I don't watch movies just because one actor/character is good.

And believe me -- I was surprised that I hated it. As I said I liked 2 and 3 plenty and I thought that the bad reviews/impressions were just similar to those of 2 and 3, but I felt that the bad reviews and impressions here were entirely founded.

I didn't say the acting was bad. I wouldn't say it was great, I mean nobody was charming or likable to me, but badly acted? No. Acting is just one aspect of a film. A movie can be well acted and still be total shit -- just look at The Tree of Life.

And yes I do blame it on the writers. It was terribly written. I didn't think Marshall did an amazing directing job but he was very competent. But I don't blame the actors or director.

It could be the studio's fault too, maybe the original script was different and the studio forced the screenwriters to rewrite it.

RotPotA and Cabin in the Woods were both amazing.

You know what ruined On Stranger Tides?
The fact that it was shot in digital. It looks so cheap!
Digital cinematography only fits dramas and overall directors who know how to use it.
On Stranger Tides looks like a cheap straight to DVD pile of shit that only plays on HBO on Thursday mornings.

The digital photography is the least of that movie's problems.

Burtons film should be tossed into a fire.

    I love Burton's films...except Mars Attacks.

I guess it's just because it's the one Burton film my hubby and kids watch over and over and since they've watched it so much now it just gets on my nerves. When I first seen it, it didn't bother me that much but now it just drives me nuts.

I wonder how many people have actually read the original book of Planet of the Apes.

Not sure why it needs a script when all they really want to do is show how "realistic" they can make monkeys look.
  • CarneCarne Posts: 1,928 ✭✭✭
If I remember correctly, Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a good script.

Would you rather want them to make bad looking monkeys?
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,869 ✭✭✭✭✭
No, I'd rather them make a good movie. All the first one had going for it was the effects and even that got boring once the new car smell wore off.

Also not sure where you derived "would you rather them make bad looking monkeys" from in my post. All I said was that the first movie was obsessive with how human-like they could get the monkey facial expression. Personally speaking I'm the kind of guy that would rather have things like storytelling and character development. Special effects should never be prioritized.

You know what movies work? Movies like Jurassic Park, where the spectacle is there but at the same time the script and performers gives us characters that are worth a damn that are frequently put in life-threatening situations. That's what makes action and spectacle work. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was like the total antithesis of movies like Jurassic Park.

Rise blah blah of the Apes was nothing more than a WETA tech demo and yet another excuse for Andy Serkis to act like an animal.

Basically give me a story worth a damn or at least somewhat likable characters and put them in danger so that I can at least be thrilled/entertained. The first one did no such thing.

It did not. The movie went down the drain as soon as Caesar talked.

So Crucify the ego, before it's far too late, to leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical. And you will come to find that we are all one mind, capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.

You weren't supposed to care about the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. I don't even see how you can compare them.

How so? You know the monkeys talk in the original movies as well? It just shows he's evolving, and gives an idea of what might happen in the sequel(s).

You were supposed to care about the monkeys in this movie? Whoops! At any rate that has nothing to do with this argument. I said nothing about whether or not you're supposed to care about the dinosaurs. I said that Jurassic Park is a great film because it puts likable characters in mortal danger and is a super intense ride. Planet---Apes does nothing of the sort. There was no intensity or any reason to give a flip about anything in the movie other than WETA's work which is a gimmick that wears off fast. Jurassic Park works because it has a lot more to it than awesome looking creatures.
