I just thought it looked off. Like none of the designs felt cohesive and everything was just boring or uninspired to look at. That's why I thought it had bad art direction. I realize it's a dystopian society but there was a futuristic pizzazz to it nonetheless that could have looked great but didn't.
Just seen the movie, I truly love it. The thing that impressed me the most is the phenomenal acting and some creative direction (the hallucinations scene is a highlight of that creativity).
- Jennifer's acting is absolutely incredible in the 30 seconds before the game, summed all the feelings written in the novel in her acting in this scene. - I didn't find the shooting too shaky, some one in the cinema kept complaining about it though, but I found it perfectly normal and didn't make things too unclear or incomprehensible, perhaps the final fight scene could have used a less shaky cam. - The special effects wasn't that bad either, nothing impressive but generally okay. - The movie could certainly use more wide epic shots, sometimes the movie shows how it needed a larger budget. - Love the added scenes, the
uprising scene especially, people at my cinema loved how it was similar photography-wise to uprisings here in Egypt
- The version that is shown here in Egypt is the unedited one with the added violence, it certainly pushed the PG-13 rating and I was surprised at the amount of violence shown, which is the great thing about the movie being a lionsgate production. WB would have too scared to do this.
All in all, great adaptation, surprisingly I don't think of any major alteration needed for it to be a better adaptation as I usually think of during watching some harry potter movies.
Wow, never thought someone would remember me, I thought I haven't really left any kind of impression . Thanks for your post, I have been visiting the forum a lot though and read a lot of posts without commenting, no idea why but I think I will try to post more in the future as I have much more time now as I have finished my exams.

A budget of $150m would be perfect. They can actually show us the Hovercrafts instead of just glimpses.
I agree, sometimes the special effects or anything completely cgi-ed felt too separate from the main scene and only part of it is shown as if they can't show the whole thing, you know what I mean? it's something tv shows with special effects usually do. that's one of the few things I didn't like about the movie.

Yes, like the riot scene, at the end when the Hovercraft appears. You can only see part of it. Or when the tributes first get into the hovercraft, we never see it fly, they just did some lighting effect and said it was flying.
Can't blame Gary for that, it was Lionsgate being cheap.

They were in a really bad financial situation then, and they were taking the biggest risk in their history. I don't think they were being cheap, they just couldn't take such a big risk
More money doesn't mean better special effects all the time. District 9 had a 30 millions budget, the prawns and the 95% of scenes with special effects looked very realistic. Also, Lawrence has experience with special effects.
Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine? That's great! Maybe they weren't satisfied with the script and want to improve it To suits Francis Lawrence approach.
I'm really looking forward to the roof scene before the games. Gosh, Ross would have done an amazing job with that scene. Hopefully Lawrence can do the same!
I just notice that harry potter 7 part 2 made $381,011,219 domestic with 3D and Hunger games till now made $380.7M without 3D to help making money! That's incredible!
Just happened to stroll by Joey Graceffa's Facebook page. The sheer number of fangirls who want him as Finnick is astonishing. Sure, he's pretty. But he's just so...feminine. Did they read the character of Finnick beyond the good looks at all?
I know. Joey is just simply not right for Finnick AT ALL. Like, in any aspect. He's good looking, but in the complete opposite sense of how Finnick is supposed to be. He's meant to be this manly fisherman guy who's stupidly good at throwing harpoons around. I cannot see Joey doing that.

They're obviously pushing the budget to way over $100 million.
And finding out that Francis was chosen for his love of the books makes me excited now. *-*

Meh.
EDIT: He wrote Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3. It's not very bad. But they're crazy to make him rewrite Beaufoy's script.

Garret Hedlund still has my vote by a mile. Like I couldn't imagine a more perfect role crying his name.
