A new review i just found

'Part One

Part one is shaping upto to be pretty thrilling. Its the darkest most grown up Potter film to date.

Gone is the bright, vivid world of magic and wonder, to be replaced, with a dark, very real world
that feels very much like a Yates earlier Tv work. Its much grittier and much more earthy in both
its tone and its color palette

This is a wonderfully paced film taking us from the warm and homley environment of the weasley homestead to the
wilds of the english countryside in winter!

There are some genuine scares in this film, i jumped several times throughout. Also some Very tense action set pieces!
Several high octane chases and some 'operatic' acting from the wonderful Ralph fiennes!
He was wonderfully set up in the last few films but this is were he comes to the forefront! No messing around this time
this is Voldemorts film! And he is truely commanding and frightening!

A centrepiece of the film is an attempt by Harry, Ron and Hermione to infiltrate the ministry
of Magic which is now under the control of the villainous Voldemort and his followers.
The scene sees the return of one of the series most enthralling characters, the sickly
Dolores Umbridge.

Although she is only in a handful of scenes Imelda staunton is completely wonderful! Her final
confrontation with harry (a swirl of dementors above her head) is spectacular and her comeuppance long overdue!

Overall This is a far cry from Chris Columbus work on The Sorcerers Stone, its a wonderfully crafted
mature film, with some extraordinary cinematography! Some first class acting from Daniel Radcliffe, Emma watson and
Rupert grint. But the gold star here goes to the terrible trio of Alan Rickman as the tragic Severus Snape, Imelda Staunton
and of course the magnificent Ralph Fiennes.

I dont see any reason why the acadamy shouldnt aknowledge this!

Highlights - The 7 potters - High octane, fast paced and wonderfully realised from the book

Ministry infiltration - Dolores Umbridge back to her delisciously evil self! My favourite scene

Ralph fiennes - Truely terifying and commanding! One of his best performances on screen! One of the best villains in
cinematic history!

Yeah absolutely, i was hoping they would finally give Ralph/Voldemort enough room to maneuver and perform to his best ability... unlike in OOTP where it was rather pathetic compared to him in GOF, so it is good to hear that he is finally the real Voldemort, evil and all!

I found him really evil in GOF and OOTP. Again, it's the character development that was needed to let Ralph explore the character more, which he did perfectly in both GOF and OOTP, even though the screentime was short.

Well what i meant was that in GOF he really personifies Voldys evil state and therefore the essence of him, whereas in OOTP all he has are a couple of ridiculously pathetic one liners... that don't even mean anything, like so weak, so vulnerable i mean come on even his longest line in the film... you're a fool Harry Potter and you will lose everything is cheesy and is nothing against even liners in GOF because generally Yates isn't the best with dialogue since he has to put 'because i have something worth living for' in what is seemingly every time they meet. However in all the other films with them they have cleverly worked dialogue... especially in GOF, it gives me chills unlike what OOTP gives you which is to put it plain and simply really... nothing at all apart from maybe cringeworthy lines and other than that i can't really think about the other emotions we pass through during the scene(s)

It just always felt over dramatized (lines and all), his acting as Voldy in OOTP... but make no mistake he acted well, it was just the delivery was a little off but that was probs just the way Yates told him to go for.

Oh, I see...another Yates bashing attempted. Any thoughts on Michael Goldenburg ? No. I see none of Voldemort's lines as cheesy and he says them with the trace of menace as he should.

If anything, Fiennes over acted in GOF, but he did improve in OOTP. He needs time to shine that's all.

"So weak...so vulnerable" was a good line that was used appropriately to bring Harry down, both mentally and physically. The entire film was Voldemort messing with Harry's head and isolating him and that was futher stretched with "You're a fool and you will lose everything."

I've just stated in the other thread that this is not me bashing him, its just me putting my point across, having my own point of view, giving my opinion... as should you! get it?

And sorry but no way did he over act in GOF (he was pure evil, a madman, Voldy in a nutshell lol) meanwhile in OOTP he wasn't really the real LV... just an ordinary madman, nothing particularly special, it just didn't really come across as well as in GOF.

I've had criticism of Fiennes' Voldemort in the past of being a bit over the top, but as I have said, his perfomance in OOTP was better than GOF imo. I just feel it foolish to blame Yates about the dialogue, when Michael Goldenberg was the screenwriter. And I didn't feel his lines were cheesy at all, in either GOF and OOTP. And I will not seriously judge a line that has not yet been heard in context.

I never judged 'only i can live forever' (read my comments again for assurance of it) in fact i'm wondering and looking forward to seeing in what context it will be placed, along with the scene itself! and i didn't like Goldenberg at all, even compared to Kloves... i thought everyone felt that same way?

I like Kloves better because he has experience of this world, but given what Goldenberg had to deal with he did very well for OOTP.

@ Lord Stafford: "Yates isn't the best with dialogue since he has to put 'because i have something worth living for' in what is seemingly every time they meet."

What do you mean by this ?
  • Lord StaffordLord Stafford Posts: 27,353 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well Jonny, i meant in that ever since OOTP and probably DH we have seen whenever they meet or even when Harry mentions him... he always has to say something like 'because i have something worth living for' although i do suggest you don't take everything literally (that was a major part of my past failures) because of course i don't mean all the time, every time, though it is most of the time! do you understand now? know what i mean?!

Harry has only said this line once to Voldemort. At the end of OOTP, Harry says "Because we have something Voldemort doesn't have. Something worth fighting for.." and that's not even in the same scene as Voldemort.

I am not taking this literally, but I really don't get what you mean.

Well the same sort of lines then, like i said not exactly, rather than in the previous films where he had alot of better lines... i prefer them ones, these days there a tiny bit repetitive! and heres a question for you... completely off topic i know but do you Jonny or anyone else know or have any ideas about where Snapes death is held because i'm sure we've all seen the footage of him looking at the floor and leaning up against the window, this is probably his death scene since its clearly not going to be in the Shrieking Shack unfortunately. So perhaps the Boathouse?

There hasn't been confirmation, but I do think it's the boathouse. I posted pictures on the Snape's Death thread which leads me to believe it'll take place there instead. However, it may take place somewhere entirely different.

In regards to this new review, I really can't wait to see Umbridge back in action! :D
  • Lord StaffordLord Stafford Posts: 27,353 ✭✭✭✭✭
But now that i've looked... although there are now windows in the Boathouse, they look far too big to be the ones in there judging by the picture in your link!

But then again, outside the window appears to be water... which is obviously next to the Boathouse!
