Harry Potter movies make kids MORE creative, say researchers

Watching Harry Potter films could make young children more creative, claims a study.
Carried out by Lancaster University, it’s the first attempt to study whether there are any educational benefits in exposing children to magical content like witches and wizards, Santa Claus, the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy.
The study examined if there was a link between magical thinking and creativity in preschool children – and it found that there was.

Wand-erful: Harry Potter movies makes kids more creative, say researchers
The small-scale study involved 52 four to six-year-old children. The youngsters were split into two groups and shown two 15-minute clips from Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone.

The findings show that after watching the clips, the group who watched the magical scenes in general scored ‘significantly better’ in all three areas than their peers in the other group.
Researchers Dr Eugene Subbotsky, Claire Hysted and Nicola Jones from the Department of Psychology at Lancaster University concluded that: ‘Magical thinking enables children to create fantastic imaginary worlds, and in this way enhances children’s capacity to view the world and act upon it from multiple perspectives.
‘The results suggested that books and videos about magic might serve to expand children’s imagination and help them to think more creatively.’
Magical thinking involves believing in supernatural events like animals speaking human languages, or a witch flying on a broomstick.
This involves the ability to construct an alternative world and research has shown that most four to six-year-olds think magically in everyday life.

Some of the scenes include animals talking and witches and wizards performing spells and using wands, while other scenes featured the same characters but without any magical content.
The children were then tested for creativity which included being asked to pretend they were a rabbit or driving a car. They were also asked to think of different ways of putting plastic cups in a bin and for alternative uses for the cup.
The children who had watched the magical scenes performed significantly better on the creativity tests.
The researchers concluded that rather than just being used for entertainment, ‘magical thinking can be viewed as an additional source of development of imagination and divergent thinking in children.’

I started picturing movie scenes, creating movie ideas and eventually decided to follow a filmmaking career because of the Harry Potter movies.

Oddly enough im in the same boat as you two hahaha I am taking an intro to film class this fall...the more I think about it and I want to express my mind to the maximum capability theres only one form of art which encompasses every form of art to build into something exceptional. Its a true collaboration with a mass amount of people haha. Ive experimented with film for a while and I want to learn new aspects. I'm not going to major in it but I may show off a movie in a gallery every so often. They will end up being creepy art house endeavors though :P haha Potter influenced me as a kiddo to always think outside of the box and it does to a lot of the people in the fandom. Its fantastic. It is stunning to think that an ordinary woman would have such a genius idea on a train which would spawn all of this. haha. It makes me think of my favorite quote from V for Vendetta..."Ideas are bulletproof." :)

The great thing about filmmaking is that it involves so many artistic fields, from photography to music, from scenery to performances. For me, that's why it is called the seventh art, because it has a little bit of everything.

Particularly, with your amazing artistic skills, I think you would be an amazing art director or set producer, Ry :D

I would love to design movies definitely. I just don't know how I would go into a job in that field. I am almost tempted to move to hollywood, get a job as a college art professor and on the side and do art design for movies starting out and some gallery shows, build a name for myself and eventually begin directing haha. Gahh I just don't know how to go about it. lol I need to start reading up on it and preparing haha. I wanna do too much stuff, and have so little time lol :(

Ry, you are in the best country to make a career in the filmmaking industry. Just go to Hollywood! Don't forget that in movies they need a lot of workers and there are even Job magazines just in this field. You could start working in the Art department as assistant or a designer and slowly build a path for a supervisor or director! :D

You should totally be an Art Director or Set designer Ry. Based on the evidence so far ( your artworks), I think we all agree that you have the spark bud. And one should follow his/her dreams. You would be great in the field. Just read out my name in your speech when you get the Oscar,BAFTAS etc mwoohahahha. >:) Haha kidding LOL I know its not only about awards recognition but about the kind of satisfaction and respect you get from your body of work from your peers and friends, and you totally would get heaps of that.

I really do appreciate all this help guys from Rick with how to find a job in the field and Abhi with a big confidence boost. I appreciate it a lot guys. I just want to accomplish so much haha. The way I work is that I don't ever do pretty things. I have to do things that are social commentaries, they make people think, make them ponder, make them love past the surface and make them wonder how it relates to them and the world. I have some ideas how to translate it to film. Idk :3 Ill see where all this goes :D haha

    So what film inspired you?

My inspirations were always the Harry Potter movies. As each came out, my love for movies grew bigger. I started having these ideas for "new Harry Potter adventures" and I still have a little notebook where I wrote down each one of them, not just my Harry Potter ones, but also my "original" ones. I used to organize them in scenes as in a DVD scene selection, the titles were so stupid LMAO

I still remember, bud. I was in junior high, 9th grade. Our Ethics teacher showed us Requiem for a Dream. When it ended, I didn't have any doubts. I couldn't remove the idea of working in the filmmaking industry of my idea. I just wished I was born in another country to help achieving that LMAO :(

OMG Requiem for a Dream is simply amazing. I adore this film!
Me too, I wish I was born in the USA :(
I'm thinking about going to film school but I'm not sure if here in Brazil they're really that great. I'm thinking on studying Publicity, then I'll study at Lee Strasberg in New York. I figured that acting is the easiest way to get in the market.

Matt, as someone who graduated in Filmmaking, I strongly recommend you to try going abroad. It has been basically a year since I graduated and I can't find any jobs. It's basically impossible. All of my friends are in the same situation. Some of them are even working in camps and stuff. I don't regret, but I would totally think twice if I could go back in time!

I love acting! One of favorite subjects in university was Casting Direction. It was great. I feel like trying acting someday, but right now I'm focusing in post-production, visual effects and animation. Let's see how it goes :)

Thank you for clarifying this to me, I was really afraid that would happen if I studied here.
So yeah, I'm studying something else just so that if I can't get on the business, I still have an alternative, that happily has a lot to do with filmmaking.

But I'm pretty sure you will eventually find something, Rick! I wish you the best of luck, I hope you really make it into movies!

Thank you so much, Matt! :D

I'm sure you'll make a wise decision. Having an alternative is great. Have you considered studying Audiovisual? It's a great course that gather basically all of the kinds of Social Communication courses (Radio, TV, Filmmaking, Publicity, Photography). I wished I had studied Audiovisual, because I would be able to receive the DRT of Filmmaking, Television and Radio. Unfortunately, studying Filmmaking, I was able to receive the DRT of my field and by that, I can't work in any TV station, can you believe that :(

That really sucks! I don't get why someone with a Filmmaking DRT wouldn't be able to work in any TV departments, as films are naturally more complex than TV, but oh... At least you live in SP which is probably where most film production companies are, so you'll find something soon. I'm sure :D

Audiovisual is also a good one, and the UNB course is said to be the best of the country. I still have a year and a half to decide anyway :)

Speaking of research studies dealing with Harry Potter, I am currently doing my undergraduate thesis on media fandoms (e.g., Harry Potter). It would be great if you all could help me out... :)

What does it really mean to be a fan? We want to know what you think!

Please complete this short survey and help to construct a new psychometric measure that will assess fan identity specifically as it relates to media fandom. Thank you!

I could no agree more with this study. I have 2 boys (as you all know) that have watched every Harry Potter movie and one that is reading all the books right now and they are extremely creative in almost every way possible. In their play they are constantly imaging that they are wizards (using sticks from the yard as wands, of course) and fighting off evil people and imaginative creatures. They even have me evaluate their wands (tell them the wood, core, length, etc.) I absolutely love watching them. Jayden has also started drawing more, he especially loves to draw dragons and castles, those sorts of things.

And in the mean time I'm going to fashion a lens on a camera that allows you to collect Photons from outer space WHILE filming so you can capture me walking down the street then BLAM a fuckton of galaxies from 7 billion years ago surround me.

First, thanks to everyone who completed the survey! :)

Second (@RyGuy), by no means would we want you to feel forced to take the survey or would we want you to view yourself as a lab rat. But, isn't everyone a unique case to some extent? Aren't all HP fans
