“The Hunger Games,” the film adaptation of the bestselling novel by Suzanne Collins, took in $155 million dollars to take the top slot, according to early estimates from Lionsgate, the studio behind the film. The sci-fi action movie stars actress Jennifer Lawrence.
The box office gross of “The Hunger Games” is the third-highest opening weekend ever, behind “Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2″ and “The Dark Knight.”
It’s also the highest opening of all time for a non-sequel movie. No movie has ever had as large an opening weekend outside of the summer season.
The book is the first installment of a trilogy, and the movie’s box office results mean that filmgoers can expect to see the other two books brought to the big screen as well."
When you look at the amount of screens THG has compared to TDK and DH2, and the fact it's not 3D, it just blows my mind(not really, but still). :O
I wonder now if Lionsgate is thinking about moving Catching Fire's release from November 2013 to March 2014? Clearly the lack of competition in the spring helped The Hunger Games. With no other 'big' release in the spring, all of the talk is on the Hunger Games.
With the Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises going to be rolling out 150m+ openings as well, this is going to be a massive, competitive and recordbreaking year.
paying 2x for potter was one thing. but i REFUSE to do it for this. its simply for money. im putting my foot down. ever since HP did it evreyone thinks thats the best way to get more money even if the story doesn,t justify it.
It isn't certain that they are going to do two films.
I think they would add a lot more development if they did. I think they could easily do it though. The first film would end after that battle where the hospital gets destroyed. And the second would be a lot about Katniss going to the front and the taking over of the city. There is a lot they could do there. There is a lot more going on in the third book. And they could fix it's character development issues a bit.
But it doesn't have to be boring. Especially because they don't have to keep Katniss point of view. They could show some of the war or show some of what other characters are doing.

Well you know. They don't just have to show a bunch of Katniss in the bunker and her clothing. They can show the bombing of the bunker at District 13 and the war as a greater event. And what Gale is doing. There is a lot that they can do. And that could all lead to Katniss becoming the Mockingjay.

Hmm..
With Jens whole schedule issue, they might not have a choice =/
Ain't the District 2 sequence too late to finish the Part 1? It's more of the half of the book. Anyway, I agree to have more war, but not with Katniss's point of view. In the book, the fact that Katniss had barely something to do, showed that the District 13 controlled her on the same way as the Capitol.

Show the war in contrast to her doing nothing but making propos for District 13.
Personally though, I rather them make a long, but tight adaption of the book. And by long, I mean 2 hours and 30 minutes. So it's not so rushed.
I actually don't think the length of the book matters. People make whole movies out of 180 page books so i don't think that means anything. Like the Narnia books are all really short.
Im so pissed! I was watchinh THG and the bloodbath svene was coming up and my dad called me told me to go outside and hes not even here yet to pick me up!!! I couldve seen that scene gah. The movie just gets better and better. My god.
The film raked in $10.823 million on Monday and $10.348 million on Tuesday. That brings the five-day domestic cume for the film to a massive $173.708 million.
In addition, boxoffice.com is predicting a $72 million second weekend. That would put it in the Top 5 second weekends of all time. The film tends to have a much wider audience and better legging than the front-loaded Potter films (DH Part 2 only grossed $47 million in its second weekend).
A few more updates: -The film places #2 on the list of highest-grossing Saturdays of all time (behind Spiderman 3 by a margin of $1 million) -The film places #3 on the list of highest 3-day grosses of all time, #4 on the list of highest 4-day grosses, and #4 on the highest 5-day grosses.
-Expect another high placement on the list of highest opening weeks of all time. The film's cume of $173m would already put it at #7 on the list (just above DH Part 1) but assuming that it will gross another $20 million before the week is over, it'll most likely come in at around the #4 spot (keep your fingers crossed for a #3).

In other words, we'll defintetely be seeing Catching Fire hitting theaters next November!
This might come close to beating The Dark Knight. Absolutely unheard of. It will probably sell more OW tickets than DH2 :-O

I just wished it was more popular over here. My showing was basically empty.
