"One of the biggest problem is Ross' choice in using a subdued score by James Newton Howard and the music or lack thereof could have done a lot to bring more emotion to some of the scenes that don't work as well as in the book."

The only way that the score could be subdued it's if happened the same thing with I Am Legend,which It barely had 10 minutes of music, and most of it, the main theme played in piano and strings, when JNH wrote 90 minutes of music which included powerfulmusic.
