edited March 2012 in General

Joseph Kony lives in Central Africa. What Joseph does is, he abducts African kids. He takes them and he keeps them. He makes the boys killers, usually they have to kill their families. When girls are abducted they are turned into sex slaves and are raped. There is no way out of his group: Lord’s Resistance Army, AKA the LRA. He has adbucted over 30,000 children and had made them child soldiers. he won’t stop what he is doing until he is caught, he found out that the US is now on a making to look for him making him harder to find. Right now, Kony is invisible because no one knows about him.. no one. Tell as many people about Kony as you can and make him visible and know. Donate money if you can. Make him visible. we need change, and we need difference. we need Kony to be famous so we can stop the harm of innocent children.
Please share.

People want to make a difference, whether it ends up working or not. They basically want to make Kony extremely famous online, due to the influence media has, so that the government helps out the LRA situation.

Haunting...powerful. One of the most eye-opening videos I've ever seen. This is spreading very fast around the internet, by the way. It'll go viral soon, mark my words.

I saw this earlier today. Ashamed to admit that at first I didn't feel like sitting through a 30 minute video, but once I did, it sucked me in. Powerful stuff. Going to donate money soon. :)

    Wow.

That was a really moving story, I just can't believe all those years have passed and not once have I ever heard of him. It seems to be spreading really fast now. Everyone on Facebook is sharing it. Looks like the whole world will know pretty soon.

Wow...that was so powerful. I just ordered a kit and will absolutely plaster my city along with the other local graffiti artists I know with those posters. I found a high res of the file online and I highly implore you all to put these everywhere possible. Get the word out folks this has got to stop. Just as he said to, don't watch it once and forget about it. Personally I find it impossible to forget about something so disgusting to out human brothers and sisters. This must end.

    Here is the poster:

We had a Student Council meeting, and we are posting posters around the school, and printing an article in the school paper. We're also buying bracelets.

Kony has actually been in hiding since 2006 and Uganda has stabalized in to a much safer and peaceful country. I'd suggest taking the money you all are spending on kits and bracelets and maybe donating it to a more prevalent issue in Africa.
Well Uganda has stabilized like the video says, however Kony is still out there collecting children lol. Not nearly as much as he once was but he still is, and still has control of many of the priorly collected children. The rate of him taking children has decreased, but it is still going on. We on this forum have it easy living in first world countries and not knowing the pain of being forced to kill our own parents then kill others for some guy that has brainwashed us. Sure one could argue that an event along those lines has happened but it is not as widespread as it is there. Also the money collected is going to rebuild schools better equip forced after Kony. They are still killing people as they move but they are a lot safer thanks to donations provided for technology in order to track his whereabouts. It is almost cynical to say that maybe I could spend my money on something more prevalent in Africa. Africa is a country facing the aids crisis as well as a hunger crisis in the east. Darfur has now passed with only small conflicts occurring, Libya is facing a drastic change as Gadhaffi has fallen. Really all that remains as major occurrences are hunger and aids of which there are thousands of charities for each (that I myself have donated to and am sure other people here have.) This is just one charity trying for one thing and it is also a global experiment. This is something new that has never been tested before so it will be interesting to see how it unfolds and if it will work with the globalization of social media. Besides the box is only $30 lol. Its not that big of a deal :3

    Seriously, that.

    @Sir_Cadogan
Listen, I like you. But maybe YOU should think before you post. People want to make a difference. Whether it ends up working or not, people have the right mind set in helping others. We could be promoting murder but instead we are promoting the capture of someone who deserves to be put in jail if not to death. If people begin to learn more about Joseph Kony, you have no clue what's going to happen or who will see it. It's one thing to not go ahead and post it and attempt to do what the video is asking, but to put down the beliefs of everyone is selfish and ignorant. You don't know if this will help the capture of Kony. Have you seen the video? Before you question people's desire and thoughts, think to yourself: "Is their concern affecting me negatively?"

By the way, I hate that two people liked that comment.

Yeah it's $30 YOU spent. How many others have also bought it and other stuff to spread awareness? It adds up. Awareness and advocacy can be a good thing, but considering only 20-30% of the money raised is going towards active aid, it's basically a catch 22. Also, like you said, Africa has a shit ton of other problems, which actually cause more deaths than Kony. We can get people food and water and shelter. We can't however, find a fuigitive or pressure governments to find him.

@Morse Honestly Morse, what do YOU think is going to happen? You think he is out and about buying groceries and someone will see him? Just because a video has gone viral doesn't change a thing. Though I'm sure it makes you feel like you've accomplished something by watching it.
I think this will raise awareness globally, and stress the situation more.

I'm all for fighting for a cause and being passionate about the cause. I am for this Kony 2012 campaign. I do feel that no one should be allowed to inflict this type of suffering on anyone. But I get Jeff's point. I know Ry is active in giving and fighting for a cause (hence the No H8 picture he has) but there are other issue that should come to light also, not just this one. Yes, there are tons of charities that do tons of different things but they still need the type of voice this campaign is getting. Anyway, all I'm saying is that I get this, I really do get this campaign and I'll more than likely end up joining it but I see Jeff's point. So don't be hatin' lol.

Even if it's allowing the opportunity to make people act as though they suddenly want to become a political activist, it's good that so many people will take 30 minutes out of their day to watch the video and acknowledge that this stuff really exists. The notion that this thing is spreading around so fast and we can rally ourselves online towards a good cause is simply incredible. The power of the internet.

Yeah I agree, I try not to get too irritated at certain aspects of it such as teenagers who feel like such an involved activist by posting a video that they wouldn't know or care about otherwise if it hadn't been on their facebook newsfeed and the ones who are all "if you don't watch this you are a terrible person".

The campaign overall is a good thing. What I'm truly hoping it does is that it not only get Kony captured, but help raise awareness that this stuff exists all over, and that Kony is only one example.
  • RyGuyRyGuy Posts: 7,837 mod

Exactly! It all adds up and goes to a great cause. Scores of people donate to Hunger and Aids relief funds daily and this is it's own thing and the only fund for this cause. Theres tons of diverse charities for the other things going on in Africa, but this is after a certain aspect of these tragedies and is going for this distinct purpose. This all serves a purpose as this is also an experiment with social media and how it can help change the world. That is was fascinates me about this all. This is not doing any harm to the world so I do not understand why so many on the thread are being so negative about something that is going to do some good in the world. The world is already negative enough and I don't get some of the negativity I am reading online about this call to action. This is a movement that is fresh, new and incorporates so many ingenious aspects of our culture from including celebrities and political figures to get everyone to know more, using technology to change the way crimes are handled in smaller countries. Look at Libya for instance. Syria. All these uprisings and how we all know about it and the world knows due to social media and how it has affected those people and how the world translates their messages. This can change the course of how these crimes are handled. Social media already has shown that it can change the world. That is the power the world has now. The world can change itself only if it wants to change itself, one step at a time. This case with Kony is only one small stepping stone in the garden of disgusting human beings and if it can help capture someone that does something this malicious to human kind then I will of course back it 110%. Sure we cant find the guy ourselves, but this can help equip the right people to do it. A little bit helps in the grand scheme of things and for all the activity and attention to this one cause, maybe it can evolve and transform into more causes as time goes on. I think this has actually been so well received because it is well structured and done well. If you look at some movements like the Occupy movement for instance I think it has pretty much failed because they don't have a main figurehead charging the movement. Instead it is all viewed like a bunch of whiney college kids sleeping in parks by the media. This is all because it is all so different, each city has different groups, different people and etc. The intentions are mostly good however it is not being addressed to the masses in a structured and simple message. This Kony 2012 has a main figurehead and a distinct and structured plan for how this all works so people are more than likely more optimistic in Kony's capture. People all over the world that would not normally do anything to change the planet now actually feel like they possibly can by means of spreading word. I think that is why this is so strong, and spreading so fast. It is a moving story and a good attempt to try and change the world and really yeah there is other stuff going on in the continent, but there are tons of charities and organizations already trying to help and put a dent on what is going on. I have no problem donating $30 to help build schools, arm soldiers or fund the movement.

It's the propagandistic nature of the campaign. 31% goes to charity? that's theft. They are selling merchandise, which is goddamned fucking sickening. Let's sell some shirts as if that will help get rid of the LRA! These people are morons and they won't do anything. It's a fad that will pass while the "charity" organization rakes in the big bucks. It's vehemently vomit-inducing.

I am not against aid to these people. I am against the method used here and the fact that no one gave a crap about this years ago. I am against these people capitalizing on these deplorable acts by a bunch of raving fundamentalist Christians. I am against the US intervening because it's time for some other country, or countries, to take the buck for a change.
