Going to rate out of 4 as all the nuances in the 10-point scale are more confusing than helpful considering people perceive scores differently.

1-terrible, 2-mediocre, 3-good, 4-excellent (however hardly perfect as the score implies because nothing really is).

    The Artist
    The Descendants (3.5/4)
    Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
    The Help (2.5/4)
    Hugo
    Midnight in Paris (2.5/4)
    Moneyball
    The Tree of Life (2/4)
    War Horse

2.5 means adequate, if anyone wondered.

Just came back from Extremely loud and incredibly close and OMG i Understand his nomination for Best Picture! Ok can someone tell me why the little boy and Sandra Bullock are not nominated for Oscars?? The were BREATHTAKING and heartbreaking... Seriously George Clooney can eat my ass the little boy in this film was sooooo better than him (Clooney = most overrated actor of all time) Anyway, it was a very great film, amazing music score too
  • I've never been a huge fan of George Clooney and the plotline actually didn't attracted me that much. I thought it was going to be another dramedy about dysfunctional family, as there is always one of them nominated for Best Picture in the Oscars (like Little Miss Sunshine, Juno, Up in the Air, The Kids are All Right). It's almost like a pattern. But, I was really surprised by The Descendants and by Clooney's Performance. It might be not the best picture of the year, but one of the best screenplays, with really smart dialogues. Another highlight was Shailene Woodley's performance. Her crying scene under the water is one of best directed ones of the year. It might be not that remarkable, but it's a really well balanced movie that works both as a comedy and as a drama.
  • So far:

    The Artist
    The Descendants 9/10
    Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
    The Help
    Hugo
    Midnight in Paris
    Moneyball
    The Tree of Life 9/10
    War Horse 8/10

I just don't see how a studio thought it was a hood idea to make a black and white silent film in 2011
This is what a wasted moment looks like.

    I meant good idea
This is what a wasted moment looks like.
  • Well, apparently it was one of the best ideas, after all, just look at how much praise and prizes the movie has been receiving.

I have now watched The Descendants. So far the best one out of the 4 Oscar nominated films I've seen. It does a really good job telling a story about family rapprochement.
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,869 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've honestly given up, Tree of Life left such a horrid taste in my mouth.
  • aaronaaron Posts: 20,950 mod
I've seen them all apart from The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and Hugo. So far, The Artist has been the best (by a country mile).

    The Artist - 7.5/10
A very charming film paying homage to the silent era. Lovely performances by Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo.

    The Descendants - 2/10
Awful performances, awkward and arrogant screenplay, an underdeveloped ridiculous pile of crap.

    Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - 2/10
A huge mess. Ridiculous subplots, underdeveloped characters and it has 'Oscar-begging' written all over it.

    The Help - 4/10
Strong ensemble cast and performances, but is it a drama or a comedy? Something in between? It doesn't even touch the subject of Civil Rights properly. One-dimensional.

    Hugo - 7/10
Visually captivating, despite its slow pace in the first half. Quite beautiful and nostalgic.

    Midnight in Paris - 8/10
One of Woody Allen's best films. Pays homage to the 1920s and the Belle Epoque. Clever screenplay.

    Moneyball - 7/10
I'm not a fan of baseball, but the film's editing and screenplay are admirable. Interesting, fast-paced and clever film. A solid character study.

The Tree of Life - 8.5/10
Despite its flaws due to the film's abstract nature, it's such an ambitious piece of filmmaking. Visually jaw-dropping, deeply touching and ethereally humane.

    War Horse - 2/10
Typical cheesy crapfest directed by Spielberg. He destroyed a touching and moving stage play by creating this cringe-worthy mess. 2 stars for the decent techs.

Yes, I think that the BP lineup is quite terrible this year.

    Midnight in Paris - 4/10

I need a second viewing before giving it a final, so don't consider this my final view because I saw it in school, and the last movie i saw in school I didnt like was Gladiator and that's my all time favorite, loll, but yeah, this movie was poopy. The editing was so goddamn annoying I wanted to cut a bitch, and I'm NEVER one to complain about editing. It's not something I generally notice or care for, but wow it sucked. The music was lovely, but Owen Wilson, idk, hes cast poorly. The ending was also godawful. Idk, I didn't like it.

I redboxed Midnight in Paris to give it a clean watch outside of a noisy classroom eating crepes in French class and MONEYBALL!!! Fucking excited, I basically feel like its going to be my favorite because I love baseball.

Also, I'm seeing the Artist in theaters next week! I'm excited!!!
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
Im a little over halfway done rewatching midnight in Paris and I have decided on one thing.

I'm never watching a movie in school. How different my view of it changes when I'm 110% focused. Goes to show that to truly appreciate something, you have to be really focused.
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
Okay, I'll try and stop babbling with this:

    Midnight in Paris - 9/10

Yep, that's how much my viewed changed when I'm watching it by myself compared to watching it in a busy classroom paying less attention.

    Moneyball - 10/10

I fucking love baseball and everything about this movie. Holy fucking wow. So fucking perfect. This movie has my vote for best picture, like hell, Idc how good the Artist might be, I've never felt this way about sports. I've loved baseball for a long time, so I'm biased, but you know what? I DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK IF IM BIASED! I LOVED THIS MOVIE AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS!!!

I look at Tree of Life like the unfolding of classic literature, where the interpretations vary from person to person, depending on life experiences.

That is indeed true, but to me it works where many others don't. See Hugo and Melancholia, the latter of which DEMANDS depth in its themes due to its pretentious nature.
