A discussion with an actual expert, who notes that the specific nature of their injuries and their flock behavior generally support that they were startled. Blackbirds are actually known for having very poor night vision and were aimless due to the noise, easily crashing into objects.
That they were "blackbirds" is kind of silly to reference, given that coincidence is not necessarily divorced from plausible explanation. It's not a foundation for a good argument and, left unchecked, leaves you vulnerable to believing anything you may hear.
I'll have to find it, but I read a good article where a scientist noted just how many clusters of animals die for a variety of environmental reasons on a daily basis. The media only reports on it when they can claim a specific coincidence, though.
