I feel some wild pleasure, because Daldry is such a self-aware arrogant director. Everything he's done is as Oscar-bait as it can get. I hope the new film is a flop, for this exact reason.
Anyway, that's good for Harry. If Ext.Loud/Incr.Close is not well-received, then WB will 100% focus on Potter and this will be the WB film to be nominated for Best Picture.
It seems to be doing great so far! It's kind of a long shot for B.P. but we'll see. A lot of pictures' chances are diminishing so it could maybe even fit in. I just want a Best Actor nom for Gary Oldman, he's years overdue.
Well, Close's performance isn't worthy of an Oscar. Having seen the film, she doesn't even make my lineup. It's a very restrained and subtle performance, but it falls flat. Still, she's the best part of this mediocre film.
And Oldman unfortunately suffers from the same problem. He's way too subtle in his performance and they don't like that. They like loud crazy performances, blah. Anyway, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is pretty good. :-)
See those posters were really cool. They advertised the film as a very conceptual, abstract, contemporary, idea-based drama thriller with some mindblowing aspects and great reception. Not the sci-fi/destruction/actioner that the original promotional campaign focused on.
Captain America: The First Avenger Cowboys & Aliens Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Hugo Mission Impossible — Ghost Protocol Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Real Steel Rise of the Planet of the Apes Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Sucker Punch Super 8 Thor Transformers: Dark of the Moon The Tree of Life X-Men: First Class
Alcohol and calculus don't mix. Never drink and derive.
Well, after the 15 films nominated for effects. Hp's a lock.
Transformers- The only outstanding scene was the gigantic worm/ snake devouring the tall building. As for the robots, nothing new, same old same old.
Rise of The Planet of The Apes- Breathtaking apes. Facial expressions were very realistic. The only problem is, that there were some times when the apes looked like CGI instead of looking real.
Harry Potter- Beautiful and Mesmerizing. The dragon looked SO REAL. The Statues scene was a delight! And the Protections part was so beautiful and the choice of color was pleasing to the eyes. The protections breaking down was VISUALLY BREATHTAKING. The combination of Blue and Red was just... WOW. The battle sequences looked colorful and realistic!
I think that Potter is the frontrunner for three Oscars: Art Direction, Visual Effects and Sound. I think the film will manage to get nominated for Sound Mixing, Makeup and Cinematography, as well. The Score nod might not happen. Desplat is vulnerable because of his 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' score. If this film is well-received, it's the perfect Oscar machine and Desplat will be nominated for this. Otherwise, he'll be nominated for Potter because he'll be on the Potter bandwagon which can make it in most tech categories this year.
My new predictions:
Deathly Hallows Part 2:
SURE BETS -Best Visual Effects -Best Art Direction -Best Sound Editing
LOTS OF CHANCES -Best Sound Mixing -Best Makeup -Best Cinematography
DARK HORSE -Best Original Score -Best Picture -Best Costume Design
OUTSIDE SHOTS -Best Supporting Actor -Best Editing -Best Adapted Screenplay
My only sure bet is Visual Effects. HP already owns it.
A nomination yes. Winning? I would say Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Indeed, the true competition is between HP and Rise. To me HP wins it. While Rise's apes are incredible, HP has just way more imaginative and complex effects sequences. It's going to be like back in '08 when everyone was sure Transformers was going to win and Golden Compass took it.

I agree that HP is more imaginative, but Apes has far more complex visual effects than Potter. While most of the VFX from Potter are compositions, the VFX in Apes are actually generated. And I barely see any flaws in the Apes while in Potter, it has some ups and downs. Especially the fiendfyre sequence.
