The Battle of Hogwarts: NIGHTTIME BATTLE or DAYTIME BATTLE?!

I'm in such a puzzle, guys!
I've spent the past couple
of days admiring the epicness
of Deathly Hallows Part 2,
but I've been trying to decide
which part of the battle I like
best.

NIGHTTIME: Impeccable execution,
impressive visuals and score,
breathtaking cinematography.

DAYTIME: Plenty of emotion,
exquisite acting, beautiful visuals
(Return of the King meets Private
Ryan Cinematography), and a
monumental FINAL DUEL.

What would you choose?!

    Well yes, but I'm also
    trying to emphasize the
    BATTLE OF HOGWARTS
    overall.

    Not only these montages.

  • I would say night. it is a lot more epic although the day is pretty emotional :((
  • Damn. That's a pretty good question, Maurice. So hard to choose.

But, for me, as the best sequence of the whole series is Statues, I pick the Nighttime :D

The daytime had the climactic feeling, the raw power, emotion and finality to it. It was very bleak, simply epic, with a gorgeous, raw and desolate color palette. However, the nighttime battle has the impeccable talent to take your breath away every time. The shield and spells pose astonishing electric shades of color, amidst a canvas of darkness. It's gorgeous, sweeping and breathtaking visuals, with kinetic and bright bursts of light and a lot of energy flow. They're both pretty even, but the nighttime battle is a feast for the eyes while the daytime battle is heavy on the heart.

    I really love the part
    when Harry jumps
    out of Hagrid's arms,
    reveals himself, and
    casts "Confringo" on
    Nagini.

    That moment was utter
    perfection. Have you
    noticed how beautiful
    the cinematography is
    here?

    I LOVE IT

    One thing that really
    shines through the Battle
    of Hogwarts is the use
    of film grain.

It makes it look very gritty,
    raw, and truly epic.

Daytime. You get Harry vs Voldemort.

Am I the only one who loves the way Voldemort holds the Elder Wand? It's almost like he's trying to have as little grasp as possible, to try and treat it delicately.

Well, I don't know. I think I prefer the nighttime battle, because it has many different stages.
    Let's see:

    NIGHTTIME BATTLE

    1. Confronting Snape in the Great Hall/Voldemort's speech/Beginning of the Battle
    2. Awakening the Statues/Evacuation/The Protection Shield of Hogwarts
    3. The Grey Lady/Voldemort's Army/Attacking the Shield/Snatchers approaching/Fighters preparing themselves
    4. Destroying the Cup in the Chamber of Secrets/Destruction of the Protection Shield/Snatcher attack
    5. Battlefield Sequence
    6. Fiendfyre in the Room of Requirement
    7. Courtyard Apocalypse
    8. Voldemort's Ultimatum/Final stages of the Battle

    DAYTIME BATTLE

    1. Procession/Voldemort's Speech in the Courtyard
    2. Neville's Stand/Chaos in the Courtyard/Retreat in the Great Hall
    3. Neville in the Great Hall/Molly vs. Bellatrix
    4. Hermione & Ron vs. Nagini/Nagini's Death
    5. Harry vs. Voldemort (corridor, staircases, catwalks, battlement, mid-air, Courtyard final duel)

What's more impressive? The nighttime battle of course. The Statues sequence, the protective shield, the spells colliding and the final destruction of the shield, the Fiendfyre sequence, the Snatcher attack and the two major battle sequences in the main sets of Hogwarts (Viaduct-Courtyard-Great Hall/Staircases-Battlements-Clock Tower) with all the dementors, giants, Death Eaters, spiders etc. create a really action-packed and visceral experience that is hard to forget and pretty much overshadows every other single action scene in the series, because of how many little stages this battle has and how truly impressive it is. The cinematography is gritty, dark and almost monochromatic, but there are those vibrant reds, oranges and blues-along with the grey-ish green landscapes-that create a very visual experience. In terms of action and excitement, the nighttime battle is better.
The daytime battle is, actually, not quite as long and works more like a very big duel sequence, reminiscent of the Order of the Phoenix climax which was a series of duels and skirmishes in a 18-minute sequence. But it's visually jaw-dropping. More artistic because the daylight offers more chances to work with a gray environment full of shadows and grain, reminiscent of 'Saving Private Ryan'. Grand CGI environments (battlements, towers etc.), depth, a war-like atmosphere. Great stuff with many opportunities. But in terms of excitement, it's more like the final stage of the entire battle (daytime-nighttime) than an 'individual' sort of battle sequence, because it's much more limited.
So, artistically I prefer the daytime battle, while in terms of excitement and awe, I prefer the nighttime battle. But I think of them as a whole which makes it even better. I think that the entire Battle of Hogwarts sequence (roughly 27 minutes long) is the best action sequence we've seen in the series by far. Though it's scattered in different parts throughout the entire final 70 minutes of the film, they are just mind-blowing and I really can't wait to analyze every single frame and shot once I get my fucking BD copy.

Ugh! This is a really hard question, but I'm going to have to choose nightime. Just everything with the shield, the cinematography of the Battlefield scene, COURTYARD APOCALYPSE!!!! But I love the daytime battle, as well, with the scene of Hagrid and the DE's marching across the bridge being one of the highlights, but, yeah, nighttime.

I'm with Brian on this one folks, Nighttime is more of a visualgasm for myself...I love bright pretty lights :O hahaha but still I love daytime...gahhh...I love it all. Night time is really refreshing in its look and then daytime/morning is gritty and washed out...I LOVE IT! hahaha

Nightime! It absolutely had everything. We got more differse battle scenes. We went through an emotional journey with Harry through the night.

But the daytime battle is one of the most epic parts. The music and the base is so loud when Harry finally drops out of Hagrids arms. It's only 30 seconds but that scene for me sells the daytime battle.

Overall, Nightime is the better one.
