Lionsgate is looking to bring on a new writer for Catching Fire and planning to keep Gary Ross as director:
The mini-major is courting Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy to write Catching Fire, the second installment of the three book series that tracks the life and death adventures of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). I’m told that Gary Ross, who directed The Hunger Games, is coming back for the sequel. He originally intended to write the outline for the second film and script it with author Suzanne Collins (they teamed to do a lot of writing on the first film), but the post production schedule on The Hunger Games has made that difficult. The film opens March 23. There is no start date on the sequel, but it is high priority. Ross and producers Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik then focused on Beaufoy. Negotiations haven’t begun yet, but Lionsgate is pushing hard for Beaufoy. Aside from Slumdog Millionaire, Beaufoy also scripted127 Hours, The Full Monty and most recently adapted Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. There is extra heat on the series after Lionsgate released the well received first trailer.
If they are keeping Gary Ross for Catching Fire, that means he will have to return for Mockingjay. So, the series won't be like Twilight or Harry Potter where the movies have a different feel or style to eachother since they change directors.

Mockingjay feels brutal, desolate, bleak. I really have faith in them; the movies could be incredible if translated on screen by any good director. Are they still splitting it into two parts or not?

they are prepared leagl-wise to do so if they feel it is neccasary but theyre not saying they offically are yet
Deathly Hallows combined is an amazing experience the way it was meant to be seen
I don’t think I’ll ever get over the look on her face. That look of surprise. It’s so perfect. They don’t show this part of the Games on Panem’s televisions, and people who see the movie without reading the books don’t know that. But it’s obvious here. By her reaction. That moment of terror when it becomes clear that in 60 seconds, her life could be over. Gary Ross is a creative genius.
I say keep Catching Fire as one film, just cut down a lot of the victory tour and focus more on the Quarter Quell and the action of the games. When time comes for Mockingjay, split it this way:
[spoiler] Part 1 - Katniss visits District 12, witnesses the destruction as Peeta is captured by the Capitol and brainwashed. Katniss returns to District 13, where she becomes a part of a special war strategy team, begins to make propos and attempt to unite the Districts. She visits District 8 where they are bombed and she publicly fights back. District 13 is bombed, Peeta is rescued from the Capitol but is brainwashed. Then, serving as the climax, a slightly enhanced District 2 "seizing of the Nut" sequence, ending with Katniss being shot, waking up in the hospital, and speaking to a slightly-recovered Peeta, preparing for the final battle in the Capitol, etc.
Part 2 - Katniss, after months of hard training, begins to shape up and takes the journey to the Capitol to attack as part of a secret infiltration team with Peeta, Gale, and others. While District 13 and the other districts, united, launch their attack on the city, Katniss and their team move deep into the Capitol, disarming pods and making it closer to Snow's mansion, where she can finally kill him. The allowing of this final third of the novel to be spread into a two-hour film would definitely help the action flow much better, spread out all the deaths, and who knows? Maybe there would be some extra time left over for them to clear up the story nicely, spread the final few pages into a longer amount of time so that the ending at least feels satisfying.

It's fan-made, but it's really well made.
