Who in YOUR honest opinion NAILED their character!

Who was the best conceived and who was straight out of the book?

If I were to only talk about "best played" ( different from "best"), then I would go with Gary Oldman. He was just as I had imagined.

edit - Can we name more than one? Add Luna and Mcgonagall then. :)

DOUBLE EDIT - I forgot Snape. :O :O Add Snape in my list too, apart from Sirius, Luna and Mcgonagall.

TRIPLE EDIT - Oh forget it. I will just go with Luna because you have asked for one name I presume. :-bd

    Snape Snape Severus Snape.
    image
  • Umbridge, Snape, Dumbledore (Both dumbledores bought different sides of his character to light), McGonagall, Hermione
  • Hagrid, Snape, Umbridge, Luna, McGonagall, Slughorn

Fred & George/Hagrid/Lucius - spot on. Just what I imagined in the books.

Lupin - although in the books I imagined him a little more handsome, albeit shabby :P

Also Sirius, McGonagall, Snape, Luna, Dumbledore and Umbridge were close to my takes on them. All were fantastic.

  • Well there are quite a few I could name, but probably the most spot on were Snape and McGonagall.

Alan Rickman was fantastic and all, but his portrayal was much more calm than Snape in the book ever was so while I prefer his take to Snape in the book, I wouldn't say he was exactly Snape.

McGonagall was nailed perfectly, as was Lucius, Umbridge, Luna, Cornelius Fudge and Hagrid.

I kind of thought this about Luna, too. She gave a little more reaction in the books than the very ethereal performance in the movies. But Evanna still did a fantastic job and nailed it.

Gary Oldman did a phenomenal job as Sirius.
    McGonagall was awesome
    and so was Evanna
I loved Alan Rickman as Snape (that might just be because I love Alan Rickman in general lol)

One of the reasons I did not include Snape is that although Alan Rickman was brilliant and everything, he was far too subtle and quietly menacing sometimes. The book Snape, on the other hand, shouted and lost his temper and appeared agitated many times during the series, which is why Alan is not on my list. But I wholeheartedly agree that we could not have had a better person portraying Snape than him.

Really guys? Snape is very different in the book, who loses temper and shouts A LOT. That is NOT Alan Rickman, so really you're kinda off if you're saying he's exactly as the book. Now, best portrayed? Still could be Snape because they changed a little of him, but so what, it worked wonderfully.

Exact as the book - Umbridge, and it was done great

Best portrayal - Dumbledore (besides the shove)

    Alan Rickman is Severus Snape.

    Severus Snape is Alan Rickman.

This is heard frequently by us fans.

Alan Rickman is probably the best Severus Snape, but Severus Snape is not Alan Rickman. They are different in many ways, but I'm not denying Alan's portrayal is the best of any character.

I was merely saying that alot of people say this, and that i hear it often when Alan is refered to as Snape.

    Yes, this is true.

I don't think of Snape as Alan Rickman. Otherwise, I would have a very hard time watching Dogma, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Sweeney Todd (I love all of these movies!). It would make it very awkward...

He was good as characters in the two latters, but i can't talk for Dogma, because i haven't seen it.

It would be easier to name who didn't play their characters well, because apart from David Tennant, the guy who played Crouch Sr, and a few others (I'd have to think), everyone pretty much nailed their roles. And Dan got Harry's spirit and confidence but not his sarcasm or humor.

I agree. I think that film Snape is very different then book Snape though Alan Rickman was really good as Snape. One of the best actors in the films.

At least she had a reaction when she shouted at Harry in DH2.

Yeah, Book Snape yelled at Harry, and Film Snape never really yelled just talked in a quiet voice.

My immediate thought was Snape, so that must be my favorite.
But then I thought about Luna, and the movie Luna is better than what I saw in the books.
Gary Oldman is great, but I thought he was best in the tapestry scene in OOTP. That was well written.
Lupin was also great. The best performance in POA.
Trelawney was great, as was Slughorn. Not much screen time.

The kids got better as the series went on. I think only Emma became really professional, although Rupert was close. Nevile surprised me.

Most disappointing major character was Gilderoy. Why is it that COS is always near the bottom of everyone's favorites list? A truly charismatic performance might have changed that.

It strikes me that a great deal of love and attention went into the DADA teachers. all of them. By Rowling and by the movie makers.

Has anyone noticed the irony of calling it DADA?

Snape... and Luna. Though I dont think that Evanna NAILED Luna. I think that Evanna IS Luna.

I don't think any of the main three completely nailed their characters. I'd say Rupert came closest even with the little material he was given to work with, with Emma coming second though she really didn't have a clue what her character was about for so long...oh Emma, I'm so glad somebody eventually told her Hermione wasn't about being a "feisty pink power ranger", though I still think that aside from being good at crying her acting is kind of average. As for Dan, his acting is too stiff to even consider him as someone who nailed the character, though of the three his heart was definitely most in it, and I've got to respect him for the huge effort he put in.
