There's a BBC docudrama called Superstorm which shows a Category 3 hurricane going to New York. In the film, they mention that the structure of the buildings in the city can amplify the winds velocity and a Category 3 hurricane hitting New York would be like a category 5 hurricane hitting in any place.
Hope all made it through the hurricane ok.... I know that the winds were quite bad with this one, even though it was only a category 1 the size of the hurricane played a lot of havoc (causing some places to experience tropical winds for up to 24 hours).

Edit: They just corrected that story, they're in danger of water coming over the top of the dam if it gets too high, not breaking.
