Why can't we all just enjoy reading what we enjoy reading and respect other people's opinions even if they do not have the same opinions as us
I did, like i said... i'm just offering mine whilst everyone else is going 'Potter is better'
Lord Stafford.
Yes I know but what I'm on about is that if someone thinks its boring then thats their opinion which their entitled to. It's no good arguing with peoples opinions. I mean I know this will probably make people hate me but I actually like Twilight (runs to the bomb shelter) but I know most people here hate it but we all have our opinions.

I could never like Twilight, but that doesn't matter as it's your opinion and I'll respect it

yes but its not about their opinions , they are saying that LoTR actually sucks and its boring , and about twilight i like first book too :>
All i will say is that... if you call LOTR boring simply because it's long, you are not really entitled to an opinion at all. You don't deserve one, the right should not be there for such claims without a proper reason. It's like, for instance... we know full well that Potter is better than Twilight, sure. But none of you respect their fans opinions, and rightly so, because all they talk is trash.
And i respect that. An opinion like the one Mac came up with is hard to respect because it's so meaningless, it has no reasoning.
Lord Stafford.
Yes I do see your point it's difficult to respect a comment full of swearing :-<
It's also incredibly hard to take seriously, because you know you've won the debate when they resort to pointless swearing methods, getting them nowhere other than further deeper into their hole.

Yes I agree but not all of the fans talk trash :P
Many of them do, some of them don't. Those are a few, most of them ARE deluded, or they just like to annoy... because they all know deep in their small minds that Potter IS alot better. We say why, they don't.

Yes but unfortunately we have to try and ignore those who annoy us because no good can come from us arguing back with them. We'll all just be angry in the end.

It's unfortunate that people can be so stupid, but then you read about the people that hack down rainforests for building work... and you realise what really is 'stupid'
You simply cannot compare The Harry Potter Series with Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Like mentioned before, you have to really want to read Tolkien’s work, because you aren’t entering a story you are entering a new world. If you find it boring or hard to read then so be it, but that’s down to you and your preference as a reader. Just because, for example, you think it’s boring doesn’t actually mean that the books are boring, it just means that the style doesn’t particularly fit you as a person.
I'm dyslexic and i suffered quite a bit with the LotR, Tolkien really doesn’t make it easy, he marches on ahead and leaves the reader scrambling to catch up. It takes concentration and patience, ...a lot of concentration and patience. Where's with J.K, she waits for her reader to catch up and leads with a simple narrative, which makes The Potter Series a far easier and faster read.
I'm, as a fan, really uncomfortable with the way people are stamping about Tolkien’s life work like it was nothing with their big fan feet though. The man was a literary genius, the pure imaginative scale of his work swallows The Harry Potter Series whole. Every time Tolkien got, in layman terms 'stuck', no matter how far he was in to the book, he'd scarp it and start again. That was the level of his loyalty to not the story but to the world he was creating. I love Harry Potter and i prefer it, but I’ve read both HP and LotR, and just on pure narrative alone for me LotR wins. It's all personal preference, the only thing that's bothering me here, right now, is the way you guys are bickering. God dammit, no one will win this debate/argument it's impossible. It's like comparing Star Trek and Doctor Who, it’s the same old fandom argument. Can we just accept that both are fantastic feats of imagination and that we are really lucky, as readers, to have had them written in the first place. Things like HP and LotR are very few and far between, no one is in the wrong here, both are really rare gems of good literature.
Tolkien's work is pretty much a bible, you have to be so into it to properly understand and enjoy it, otherwise you just jump to conclusions... calling it crap at the first sign of a long, complicated word, sentence, paragraph. Whatever it may be. Everything about it is very complex.

Great post Owl. Like I said, LOTR is easily my second favorite and will have a place in my heart, just not as a big of a spot as Potter.
Tolkien is a genius, I don't deny it. It's all a matter of preference. For me, characters are what makes books. HP has some of the best characters, and that's why the appeal is higher for me than LOTR.
There will never be a winner, and that's the point. Yes, it's comparing apples to oranges, but it provides discussion and it's fun! Where would the forum be without it?
We are not. Like i've said... i don't like to claim something as a fact, so i also won't like it if someone else does it. That goes to show that, either i am a hypocrite or i am telling you that none of us have done this. I believe it's the latter. Just read up on what we've been saying since what you said, and you will see.

Lord Stafford.
Have you checked the pervious thread bout LOTR someone was stating this..
I totally understand if you like LOTR better, but that most certainly does not mean it is fact. I made this thread to say why I like potter better, not to proclaim it as fact but as my opinion. If we can all just accept opinions, there would be no arguing.
