CATCHING FIRE – FILM BASED ON SECOND BOOK IN THE HUNGER GAMES SERIES TO UNSPOOL WORLDWIDE
Santa Monica, CA, August 08, 2011– LIONSGATE® (NYSE: LGF), a leading global entertainment company, announced today that it will release CATCHING FIRE, the film adaptation of the second book in Suzanne Collins’ runaway bestselling HUNGER GAMES trilogy, on November 22, 2013. The announcement was made by Joe Drake, co-COO of Lionsgate and President of its Motion Picture Group. No further details about CATCHING FIRE have been confirmed at this stage.
Said Drake of the date, “The magical thing about the Hunger Games trilogy is that the books have such a vastly broad appeal. The stories truly offer something for everyone, and the period around the Thanksgiving weekend is such an opportunity for families and friends to make an event of going to the movies.”
THE HUNGER GAMES is currently in production and will be released on March 23, 2012. THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Alli Shearmur, President of Development and Production at Lionsgate, is overseeing the production on behalf of the studio. Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, which has over 3 million copies in print in the United States alone, is the first in a trilogy of novels which have developed a global following.
I love how they're not rushing it. Like with Twilight, the second one was released exactly a year after the first one, that also happened with Harry Potter. Having CF to be released a year and 8 months later, really shows how they really care about the source material.
That's so exciting, I can't believe there going into production already with the second book. Catching Fire is my second fav after The Hunger Games, of course. Now if I could only get my mother to read that instead of Twilight.
As this series goes on, they're going to run into some pretty big trouble trying to keep it "child friendly" like they're doing with the first one.
I honestly don't think they're doing this. There's a difference between trying to make it child friendly and trying to avoid an R rating.
Well the director has been saying in interviews how they will focus on the idea behind the violence instead of the actual violence itself. I get the feeling this will be a rather bloodless affair.
so do I. I can't see it split into two. The book was much smaller than Breaking Dawn and Deathly Hallows
It's not even just about the size of the book though. Breaking Dawn is full of boring filler and doesn't need 2 parts. It could easily be done in a 2.5 hour film.
It's even the same reason OotP wasn't made in 2 movies. The book is long, but a ton of the stuff isn't necessary.

That's true but they're going to have to show some death eventually. Wasn't Rue's death a crucial part of the story.
@weasley9 I guess that's true as well, I didn't think about that.
I liked Catching Fire better than THG, to me it was way more visceral, mysterious and exciting. I haven't read Mockingjay yet because it hasn't been released here yet, so I can't judge much on the decision to split it.
Anyways, Catching Fire was also way more cinematic to me, it was so thriller-like, then when it got back into action, it got even better. There are some scenes that I can already literally see in my mind, like the District 11 speech. I found myself with my mouth wide open when I got to the part where they kill the old man.
BTW, I was reading some pages back, and I found out Katniss and Gale's kiss was moved to THG. I didn't think it was a very bad idea, mainly because the scene is already set between both books, and it can really leave a nice gap to call viewers on to the next one. What did Katniss feel? How will it all turn out?
What got me confused is that they cast President Snow already, did I miss something? I don't remember seeing him on THG? Maybe on some video played or anything, but I don't recall any direct mention to him...
Is the President visit also gonna be moved to THG? I hope not, because that's the whole story beginning.
President Snow appeared at the end of the book, before Katniss's interview with Caesar.
Well, I'm not sure, is that right?
I don't know, I'll check it
EDIT: He's mentioned but he's not there. Yeah, I think they'll probably just introduce him earlier so viewers won't be confused at the beginning of CF.
BTW, that clock-arena thing was sooo awesome, right? ^^ I can't wait to see how they'll portray it in the movie
They shouldn't cripple the story by adding another film. They really should keep it as it is, a trilogy. I'm tired of trilogies (cough Pirates/Shrek/LOTR cough) trying to be more than they are, although I'll cut the Hobbit some slack since it was actually a published work by the author.

But the Hobbit will be a TWO-PART film. Which is, in my opinion, a terrible idea.
