The action looks like it has really stepped up

In OOTP the end battle, while well-done, felt lacking in a few areas. The fast-paced duels were pretty exciting and those wand movements gave the fighting a complexity also I really enjoyed the element-driven wand battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort, one of my top moments in the series. But I felt it was too small scale, at times the visuals were a bit of a let down and the whole thing just sort rushed by. HBP the action was small scale and really short, there was a certain lack of visual flair (bar the opening and inferi) The Burrow Attacked even lacked, well, action. However in the DH the action looks really exciting and well done. Those exploding Hogwarts structures are incredible, the Gringott's dragon smashing his way through the bank walls is stunning and smaller moments such as Nagini lunging at Harry and the Snatcher's hunting the trio though the woods look very intense. I felt a great rush of anticipation seeing hundreds of Death Eaters and Snatchers charging downhill and Voldemort leading his forces in the courtyard, that spell of his breaking Dumbledore's tomb and smashing the Hogwart's dome look simply astounding. The Room of Requirement also looks like it could be quite frightful. I was also pleased to see the 7 Potters glimpses, although I think it is still under construction the scene so far looks very nice. Loved the shot of Harry and Hagrid Rocketing down towards the earth with the Death Eaters zooming after them (and I thought the broomsticks looked alright, better than I envisioned).

Has David Yates been holding back on his action? I'm beginning to see why he decided to axe the end battle in HBP, seeing Hogwarts getting involved in a proper battle for the first time is really fresh and unique. Or has he merely grown as a director and really given this instalment his best? Time will tell.

Pintell - Completely agree with you man.

Richard - Remember me telling you why the exclusion of the BOH in HBP was justified in the "Hate or Like Yates" thread? Do you see what I meant now? It would've been downright boring to see the same battle all over again.

I'm incredibly excited for the 7 potters, the Hogwarts battle (duh!) and the Gringott's break-in. I think David Yates didn't have the chance to direct full action sequences before so we didn't see his true ability, I think his ability to direct visual effects became a lot better in HBP than OotP.

A bit OT but I also personally think that David Yates learned from the previous directors efforts and style, I really love how he used the long takes and the "Camera-enters-through-glass" of Alfonso Curon (sp?) in OotP & HBP.

I would also love to see both DEs in smoke form and on brooms in the 7 potters sequence, it's justified I think that some DE has this ability to fly as smoke while others can't. Voldemort should fly as he is (no kind of smoke form) to show how powerful he is.

About how the battle of Hogwarts is repeated: I completely agree too; when I heard for the first time that they are going to omit the battle in HBP I thought this was completely stupid to do; no way they are going to remove an action sequence from the book. But today I can clearly see the reason behind the decision as I recently read HBP too and I noticed that there is about 4 pages of "battling" that actually happens in front of Harry while the rest is told to him by others later. That's why it didn't feel that it was boring to have another battle in DH because this time the battle happened entirely "on screen" in the book. For the film, however, both battles will be "on screen" whether harry witness them or not so it will become extremely repetitive.

I disagree, the OOTP action was executed just fine. The visuals didn't lack at all (for the time) and it wasn't too short, it was just right. Also, how could the scale be too small? It was a HUGE set with massive visuals. It was perfect timing and kept a good pace.

As far as HBP, I agree the burrow attack wasn't needed. I know they say it was because they wanted to show that there was still danger outside of school but there were enough in-school references to it that it wasn't necessary. As far as the inferi, they were great. Still, I would have liked to see the climatic action segment in HBP also.

Still, is Yates holding back all the action for DH? He pretty much said they were. That's why there wasn't an HBP action scene because they felt it would be too redundant to have two battles of hogwarts. They wanted to go out with a bang and I think it will pay off in the end.
