A Voldemort question

I don't know if I missed this in the books, but why wasn't Tom Riddle put up for adoption when he was a newborn? His mother died when he was born, or very shortly after and since it was obvious that his father didn't want him, why didn't they find him an adoptive home? So many people would gladly adopt a newborn, did they try and people could sense the evilness in him and nobody wanted him? Would he have turned out differently is he would have been placed in a loving home? :-? I've been wondering this for a while, any thoughts?

What was the year when Tom Riddle was a baby? Things are different now. Was it during world war 2? I have no idea about the timeline it might have been before that so maybe it was less likely for a baby to be adopted as it would be now.

It could've very well been World War II. But if he was put up for adoption I guess it could've gone two different ways. Maybe if he found a family that actually loved him he would become an okay wizard, but we don't really know if he would've hunted down and killed his father for abandoning his mom then. In that case, he most likely was driven to that wish by purely his miserable life. If Ms. Cole had decided to give him a proper family, I suppose if things turned out okay, she could've spared England a ton of damage 50 years in the future.

I checked the Lexicon and according to it's timeline, Tom Riddle was born on December 31, 1926. So I guess since it was the 20s and maybe it has something to do with British law, that could have been why he was never adopted. I still wonder if he had been raised in a loving home would that have made a difference in how he turned out. But then again, Hitler was adopted and we all know how that turned out :-( Maybe bad blood might have won out no matter what.
