Alexandre Desplat explain why we don't have Hedwidge Them in part 1 and that may be it will be more in Part II

Like i'm really kind i have make an translation
For me, it was a great challenge because i love very much John William's work. He's certainly the last one of the big geniuses of soundtrack music of the second part of the XXth century. So it was an great honnor for me, an great joy, i have lot of fun.

Before beginning work on the movie, last summer, i wrote lot of version of this them in particular [They spoke about Hedwidge Them], in all directions, and when time to put on screen with director arrive, in fact it doen't worked. that for in this first part of the last movie there few moment with this them. It was evoked 3times i think, for less than 20 secon on screen. And its way the most purified just with the melody, just few accords, and still some measures. I didn't develop even the modulation which comes behind. Just because we realize, with David Yates, that the kids aren't at school anymore, they are in fact losing their innoncence. They are thrown in the real world and for that the theme wasn't valid anymore, didn't have anymore its place in THIS movie.

So may be it will come back in the second part, that i will begun in few days, because we go back to Hogwartz, he finds his friends, so may be it will have a recollection of the theme. But in the first part it was finally useless.

But for me John William have created themes, not only this one in particular, for Harry Potter that will be eternal. it's Great !

I hope you will understand my translation, i have done the better i can !

I hope he includes it in Part 2.
  • Goddammit!!! Part 2 was supposed to be scored by John Williams. This sucks BIGTIME... old news I know but I still need to vent

God, I hope he doesn't use it too much in Part 2. Part 1 was so refreshing for not having it as any more than a little reference.

And this is more of a complaint about the direction Yates and Heyman have been going with Part 2. They seem to think it should be a really fun movie. No. No it shouldn't. It should be darker than Part 1 (perhaps not aesthetically) because look at how many deaths there are in Part 2 compared with Part 1, and that is the death of characters who have been there since the very early books, not just the likes of Chairty Burbage, who was never mentioned before DH. So hearing that there may be plans to incorporate Hedwig's theme more significantly in Part 2 does not fill me with hope. I'm sorry, but just where would "Harry's Wondrous World" fit in between all the deaths and carnage? The way they keep mentioning how Part 1 was so dark and different because they were out of Hogwarts, "but oh don't worry they go back to Hogwarts in Part 2" kind of suggests that they are going back to Hogwarts for fun and magic times. They're not. The reason they are going back to Hogwarts is to fight a war. So they should stop suggesting that them going back to Hogwarts somehow makes the movie happier and lighter than Part 1.

Thanks for the translation! And I agree with him. Desplat just GETS the feel that the movies are supposed to have. I think the theme was used just enough in part 1. We heard Hedwigs theme as the opening bars just before the logo, again as Harry releases her as they leave Privet Drive and finally the epic version of it as she shows up to protect Harry during the 7 Potters...and it stops suddenly as she meets her death. It worked beautifully. I don't think there will be much of a chance to use it in Part 2 until the end, and I'm still praying to hear Leaving Hogwarts as Harry puts his kids on the train at the end! [-O< I will absolutely be bawling! =((

I really don't see how you've gotten that feel at all from what they've been saying about Part 2. They haven't been saying Part 2 won't be darker, they're just saying it will be much more grand and epic compared to Part 1, which is gritty. Whenever they describe Part 2, they say it's a "huge action epic with many battles".

Yeah they have said that, but I'm pretty sure Heyman has referred to it as "fun" on more than one occasion. And also because they always seem contrast Part 1 in this kind of way: Part 1 is really frightening and intense and dark. Oh but in Part 2 we go back to Hogwarts! :-D

And the only place for Hedwig's them would be in light scenes. Apart from right at the very end, I can't think of many places it would be appropriate.

It's also used when Harry looks in the cupboard under the stairs.

Indeed, Braveheart. I'm not sure why having Hedwig's theme blaring every 3 minutes is some kind prerequisite for a great Harry Potter score. You know what I like? Variety. NEW themes. Desplat delivers that.

    Oh yeah, that's right! Thanks.

And yes, I remember being all excited when he said Hedwig's theme had been underused and was disappointed when he disclosed that he barely used it, but it works just fine. I didn't miss it that much, which surprised me. As Desplat says, it just doesn't fit the mood of most of the scenes.

My main hope for this soundtrack is that he uses and develops Snape's theme. If he doesn't I will be extremely disappointed.
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,869 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't really think Snape has a theme yet. If he does, I don't know what it is and I'm pretty obsessed with the music in the series.

"Snape to Malfoy Manor" no? Well it could be called the Desplat's Death Eater theme, I suppose. Whatever you want to call it, I just hope it's in there.

Yeah I saw it more as a Death Eater theme. If Snape has a theme in Part 2 I hope it's something darkly beautiful.

He used it a lot I thought. The very beginning, when Harry was looking under the staircase, when Hedwig died, Dumbledore's will scene, and when Dobby died. I might be missing one or two, but I thought that was plenty.
And when Harry sends Hedwig to fly off just outside Privet Drive. It's heard at the end of the Polyjuice Potion track.

THIS JUST IN: For the fun new Part 2 film, Desplat hires Hans Zimmer, Johnny Marr, and Daft Punk to help score an electrifying, fun and bombastic new beat for the new film.

He just meant that because Harry returns to Hogwarts and reunites with the D.A., he may use a variation of the theme again. It doesn't mean he'll reuse all Williams themes from PS and he'll create a happy light atmosphere. Jesus...

Have faith. He delivered a fine score for Part I. Part II is, as cast and crew say, the 'epic' film of the series. Not the entertaining GoF-style film. Yes the epic battles will be entertaining for the action junkies and for all fans and casual movie goers who eventually see the grand war, but this doesn't mean that the whole feeling will be like: 'Woohoooo, we're gonna kick some DE asses, bitches!'

"He delivered a fine score for Part I"

That was mutilated and barely used apart from obliviation or Snape to Malfoy manor (i can't quite remember which it is) and Ron leaves again and again.
