The scene is great (and regrettably underrated) as is, but if Voldemort was closer to Neville at one point, it seems there's a pattern in deleted material with regard to Voldemort's relations to other characters (his proximity to Harry during the "Why do you live?" moment, etc). Interesting stuff.
