The books are arguably more detailed than Harry Potter.
Although I don't like them as much. Not even close.

    Nope, this is it!

And yes, especially when one considers he wrote his first draft at 15. I'm trying to imagine myself last year writing a story and that one day being a best seller. Just insane.

    I haven't finished Eldest yet. :( But I'm close! :D
  • JoshieJoshie Posts: 4,762 ✭✭✭✭✭
Oh man, once I finish Eldest then finish Inheritance, I'll pick up Heroes of Olympus: Son Of Neptune. :D

Eh well I could go down the usual route of saying this guy basically stole Star Wars to the point of the ridiculousness, not to mention lots of other series, but...in fact, I'll just focus on the fact that he plagiarised almost all of his writing.

    Might I suggest reading:

    http://aydee.wordpress.com/2006/12/17/eragon/
    http://impishidea.com/criticism/8/everything-wrong-with-eragon

    And watching:

I used to love this guy's writing. Then I saw the light. The amount of purple prose is absolutely dreadful.

Oh, haha, think I've actually read three of those! I remember something about Eragon climbing some mountain to free some girl from some monsters.

FUCK I NEED TO READ BRISINGR!? YAY! THAT MEANS I HAVE ANOTHER BOOK OF THIS SERIES TO READ!!! :D

You were spared a long ranting post only by the fact that my passions are better exerted elsewhere...and because those lovely links I provided rant far more effectively and compreheinsively than I could. Paulini is spared a bellyful of personal ire...for now. :>

Those criticisms are also towards the first book. The second and third are miles better.

lol the Star Wars thing is completely true, though I still read and enjoy the books.
  • aaronaaron Posts: 20,950 mod
Not to mention LOTR. Still an enjoyable series though.

There are a lot of books that are very similar. When you are dealing with things like elves and mysterious parentage, it is hard not to seemingly overlap a bit. I am a fan of the books, and Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings does not change my opinion of them.
Well, considering you've never seen Lord of the Rings -_-

I own all the books and own the extended edition DVDS, but I have never gotten around to watching them...
    ...

    le sigh...

That's true. The second book is a guilty pleasure of mine, only because Roran's story in that was quite compelling. But I struggled through the third book. That was a real tiresome struggle. I just feel that if he cut down on the excessive descriptions, he could streamline the plot into something more pacey. There are too many irrelevant portions in the books and they drag them down. Brisingr could be half as long and lose nothing of note. The 20 pages dedicated to describing the forging of a sword took things too far for me. I suppose I'll read the fourth one, purely out of curiosity to see if he's learned from his mistakes and see if the ending differs from Star Wars. :P
  • aaronaaron Posts: 20,950 mod
Ew. I found Brisingr much more interesting than Eldest. I probably won't even read the fourth book. It's just too much of a challenge to get through. Does it come out today?

Really? I though Brisingr was pretty plotless. The characters were all just doing stuff, but there was no plot. The only thing I liked was the last 50 pages or so.

About ages with Paulini when he wrote Star - eh Eragon.
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
Something that doesn't bother me specifically is detail in fantasy. Let me take a book filled with detail, A Separate Peace for example, and compare it. The detail in there bores me to death. In Brisignr? It interests me. It's the same way I read all of LOTR twice in one month, detail in fantasy intrigues me.
  • JoshieJoshie Posts: 4,762 ✭✭✭✭✭
Finished Eldest, and starting Brisingnr. I am currently reading The Death Cure, and now Brisingnr. :D Please do not spoil the book for me please, and whenever you get Inheritance, PLEASE do not spoil either, if you spoil anything, please put a spoiler tag.

This is a small excerpt of the MOTHER FUCKING 880 PAGES! :O

The ending is a bit of cliffhanger, so don't watch if you want nothing spoiled. No deaths or anything in it, it just leaves you with a: "HOLY FUCK WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN WILL HE BE ALRIGHT?!?!?!" feel :p

They were both similarly plotless. Lmfao. I enjoyed Brisingr a little bit more, although the siege at Feinster and the creation of the Shade was super pointless.

This is true, though at least Roran had a goal in Eldest. In Brisingr, pretty much everyone was just chilling waiting for stuff to happen. He should have kept it a trilogy and calmed the hell down with all the description and whole portions of what I can only refer to as irrelevant "stuff".

Yeah, Roran's story was pretty much the only worthwhile thing reading in Eldest. The battle at the Burning Plains was rather generic, and the entire section in Du Weldenvarden almost bored me to tears. Brisingr at least had a few exciting things, like the Ra'Zac capture, the dwarves, and the forging of the new sword. And the discovery of the Eldunari, I suppose.

Now, I am no way shape or form calling this better than LOTR when I say this, but every book in the cycle has bored me less than Lord of the Rings.
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
Fuck, I can't find any spoilers on the interwebz. :(
STOP LOOKING FOR SPOILERS DUMBASS! WAIT AND FUCKING READ ALL 880 PAGES OF IT!!!!!!!!
  • BraveheartBraveheart Posts: 1,910 ✭✭✭✭
I'm gonna read spoilers, and then if I think they sound interesting I might force myself to read it. :P

Correct me if I'm wrong but this will be the longest book in the series, yes?
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
My predictions. Note, I haven't really googled or studied much in a while:

Arya will be the new dragon rider, owner of the green one on the cover
Roran will be the new king after galbatorix dies
    Murtagh will die, possibly nasuada
Eragon, Arya, and bunch of other elves will leave Alagaesia
queen islanzadi or another important elf other than Arya will die

That's all I got for now. I have no fucking clue how in the world Eragon might duel Galbatorix or Murtagh, how they'll get the egg, how Eragon will end up winning, how the seige of other cities might go, or anything. I honestly have no fucking clue.

Yep, 880 pages. I'm afraid your dislike of the details will continue :p

Then again, according to the plan at the end of Brisingr, there are still 3 cities to capture (one of them being the capital). Plus, there are different points of views in his series, so that'll effect the length of course.

I mean, you're possibly looking at 3 battles here, it's going to take up a fuck load of pages.
  • TheDoctorTheDoctor Posts: 3,941 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think Roran is gonna be the next dragon rider lolol though idk.

Just as long as I don't log onto HPF and see any threads such as "OMG *insert spoiler here*"
