Could you post a few good horror movies? My friends and I are planning on a "scary day" so we're gonna watch scary movies all day and I want to have the best ones to watch!

Thanks!

  • The Strangers
    The Shining
    The Exorcist (cheesy but freaky)
The Omen (The new one or the old one)
    Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock Classic)
Insidious (when it comes out - I was jumpy in the cinema)

Halloween is the greatest horror movie ever made and it will not be surpassed in our lifetime.

    Honorable mentions:

    The Blair Witch Project
    Paranormal Activity
    Insidious
    The Exorcist
  • I wouldn't say Halloween is the best horror movie of all time... There are far more superior horror movies.. Halloween is the start of the slasher era and they aren't as scary as some more of the other psychological horrors that are more scarier..
It's good don't get me wrong.. but hardly the greatest horror

    Stephen King's Salem's Lot
Stephen King's Storm of the Century
or any horror by Stephen King is brilliant

I'm a huge horror buff and I've yet to see one that's better. I've had hour-long discussions with film professors about the immense number of filmmaking nuances and how it was totally ahead of its time. Also It wasn't the start of the slasher era, that'd be Black Christmas. I wish there were some psychological horror films better than Halloween, but frankly I haven't seen them, and honestly the best psychological horror ever created is the Silent Hill games.

I'll add Suspiria to the recommendations :)

Insidious was fantastic. The Shining doesn't do much for me, although it's a really good movie in general.
  • AshAsh Posts: 6,577 ✭✭✭✭✭
I really liked Insidious too, the first half more than the second though.

I would also recommend Inside, but it's not particularly scary. Quite brutal though, so if that may be a problem then I'd give it a miss.

Well I'm no horror buff and Halloween was crap.. along with it's many monotonous sequels
    And Halloween is a slasher
  • The Ring. One of the scarriest movies I ever seen.
Watch out for the Ring3 in 3D lol.

Then I can't take your opinions seriously whatsoever. :p

And yes, Halloween is a slasher, I just said that it wasn't the start of the slasher genre.

You can take my comments seriously cos I've seen it and my opinion was that it was a bad film..

I see I may have said that haha :P Yeh I guess it probably wasn't but it was an early one I know that :D

But it's not a bad film. It's factually a fantastic film. There's no opinions to be had. It's a classic, it's one of the highest rated horror films of all time, and it's extremely impressively made in every single category, from the wonderful cinematography, bone chilling soundtrack, pacing, editing, buildup-- pretty much everything that many horror films beyond the 90's completely lack.

Don't waste your time. It was weird and not scary at all. 1 star out of 5.

This is what a wasted moment looks like.

This scene from Halloween is one of my all time favorites. So many incredible things about it. The cinematography for one, by Dean Cundy (who went on to shoot Jurassic Park for Steven Spielberg) is sublime; the kitchen is pitch black, but the outside is illuminated by the moonlight so that you can just make out what's going on. The way Michael is revealed is stunning; it's not really played up like a jump scare in a cheap fashion, and while there's music, it's not loud or obnoxiously implemented like it is in so many other horror films. It's there, but it's not the music that makes you jump or react.

Also, the little touches. You can hear Michael breathing, as you can in a few other scenes, but it's so well done that you don't really hear it unless you're listening for it and that makes for a wonderful surprise when you discover it on your own. How, when Michael stabs him, he just stares in fascination at the body hanging before him. This film is just so incredibly riddled with subtle nuances and details that it never ceases to amaze me everytime I watch it.
  • That's indeed, darth, a great sequence. Even if I'm not a huge fan of the series.
  • The Orphanage
    That's a good one, indeed!

The Mist is fantastic. The ending had more balls than the Celtic's locker room.

It's one of the best endings of the decade without a doubt.

Wasn't scary per se, just a damn good film. Wasn't a fan of Wolf Creek to be honest, nothing frightening about it and the film could never decide what it was trying to be or what it was trying to say. It started off promising but devolved down into a Saw/Hostel knock-off with no redeeming qualities to speak of.

It's a somewhat headsmacking ending ever :P But pure brilliance.. and so full of Stephen King morals :P

I watched the Mirrors the other day.. The film had promise and I jumped a few times till the ends... And it loses all credibility in a cheesy way
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,869 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Mirrors was horse shit.

The only thing I don't like about The Mist is Marcia Gay-Harden's character. Damn that woman is so annoying. I hate her with a passion! She's the main reason I can't watch that movie much.
    That's like, the point.
  • AshAsh Posts: 6,577 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes it was. I felt bad for lol'ing when Kiefer's sister ripped open her jaw.

Oh she's my favourite character in the film. Perfectly played, perfectly written. She angers me too.

A movie that you have to have patience, will, and a strong stomach to make it through: Lucio Fulci's "Zombi." Has some of the sickest, cruelest deaths in cinematic history.
  • WHAT. Marcia Gay-Harden's character is one of the best things of The Mist, besides the ending!
  • Darth. What I liked about Wolf Creek is the naturalism in it. The movie feels so real. Unlike Saw and The Hostel, the violence is portraied in a totally plausible way.

Have you guys seen Guillermo del Toro's El Orfanato? Gosh, it's a really good film. It's scary and suspenful and the story's great!
