They will break tons of records, such as largest O.W. (definitely worldwide, maybe domestic), largest second weekend, third weekend, etc, best opening week, second week, fastest to a billion, etc. but will certainly not have as unique a box office run as the first film. I don't know if they will hit 2 billion in the end but they will sure as hell open huge.
Honestly, what’ll actually happen in these films? All I’ve heard is Cameron is going to include a sequence in Pandora’s ocean…oh, will the humans come back with some future-mad-technology and mine in the oceans for oiltanium?
No chance these are as successful as the first.. They won't be 'groundbreaking' like Avatar's selling point was. Not to say they won't be good movies, but don't count on anything above special at the Box Office.
Edit: Just to be clear by 'above special' I mean by the first movie's standards, part 2 will obviously challenge opening records but will not have legs like the first.
"If you make yourself more than just a man... If you devote yourself to an ideal... You become something else entirely- A Legend."
Avatar was an okay movie. These 2 are probably going to be shitfests with a crazy amount of CGI.
You are basing your opinion on past sequels to other movies. James Cameron has made a ton of good movies, and he would not ruin the Avatar franchise with two sequels that were bad. I think they'll be just as good as the first.
Just as good as the first would be bad. The first was okay and plot stealing at it's greatest. It's not like Super 8 where Abrams specifically said it was a homage to 80s films and he would use elements of them, Cameron literally ripped off plots of numerous films. Now, if it was executed well, I would forgive this fact. In my opinion though, it was not executed well. The acting was okay, the movie was easily centered around the CGI and not the story, it gets quite boring after a while, and the characters are rather uninspiring. That's just my two cents. I'm fully fine if you like the film, but if you're one of those who thinks Avatar is an all-time great, then I kind of do have a problem...
An all time has an original story, don't you think? And if it took a story of another one, it should be executed well, which this isn't. The acting is not that good, and even if you think it's good, this is all-time great acting? Um, no. Not at all.
Another sad thing about Avatar is that Cameron can make fantastic movies (T2 and Alien) which were original and great films. This is nothing close to it, the only thing better is the special effects. This movie was made to entertain, not to be great. Just because the CGI, crazy box-office, and Cameron's name is attached the movies reputation is blown out of proportions.
If you want original plots, I'll take you back to the first movies ever made... cause those are the ones you are looking for for original plots.
Yes, not all movies these days are original, but there's a difference say between something like Percy Jackson, which draws references from other literary sources but is its own story, and Avatar, which completely copies other stories.
Common guys... if the first was that bad, why the movie have the biggest positive word of mouth I've ever seen? Number one for 7 weeks is not only because of the 3D or the visuals... the movie have something special

I'm not saying it's terrible, it was fine. Not my cup of tea. I'm arguing that it's not an all-time great. And Transformers might make a billion, does that mean its a good movie? Nope, not at all.
Oh of course I'm going to see the sequels, I'm just worried they're going to be all CGI fest with a terrible plot. I'm only going for the experience, the imax 3-d experience was amazing, I must say.

Avatar is a fine movie, but it's definitely overrated and 100% not an all-time great.
Avatar didn't do anything for me. I didn't see the first in theaters so I doubt I will see the sequels there either.
