Favorite Climax in the Series? (Rate)

I'm sure that DH2 will pawn all climaxes (well, isn't DH2's climax like an hour long? LOL), but choose your favorite one from the 7 released films. And rate the rest of them as well.

PS/SS:
Under the Trapdoor Sequence
-Neville the Brave
-Devil's Snare
-Flying Keys
-Chess Game
-Voldemort and Quirrel

CoS:
Chamber of Secrets Sequence
-Ginny in Danger/Threatening Lockhart
-Bathroom/Entrance to the Chamber
-Obliviate
-Tom Riddle
-Battle with the Basilisk
-Destroying the Diary
-Tears and Flight of the Phoenix

PoA:
Time Turner Sequence
-The Whomping Willow
-The Shrieking Shack
-Harry and Sirius
-Werewolf Fight
-Dementors at the Lake
-Time Turner
-Saving Buckbeak
-Harry and Hermione in the Forest
-Werewolf Chase
-Expecto Patronum
-Rescuing Sirius

GoF:
Voldemort's Return Sequence
-The Maze
-Cedric's Death and Harry's Capture
-Voldemort's Rebirth
-Death Eaters
-Priori Incantatem
-Grief for Cedric
-Veritaserum/Voldemort's Servant

OotP:
The Ministry Battle Sequence
-Sirius Deception
-Umbridge's Fireplaces
-Grawp and Centaurs
-Thestral Flight
-Into the Hall of Prophecies
-Order of the Phoenix VS Death Eaters
-Sirius' Death
-Dumbledore VS Voldemort
-Possession

HBP:
Dumbledore's Death Sequence
-Slughorn's Confession
-Horcruxes
-Apparation on the Astronomy Tower
-Journey to the Cave
-Into the Cave/Drink of Despair
-Inferi in the Lake and Dumbledore's Firestorm
-The Vanishing Cabinet
-Dumbledore's Death
-The Dark Mark/Smashing of the Great Hall
-Snape and Harry's Duel
-Dumbledore's Farewell

DH1:
Deathly Hallows Sequence
-Meeting Xenophilius Lovegood
-The Tale of Three Brothers
-Deathly Hallows and Escaping from the House
-Snatcher Chase
-Captured in Malfoy Manor
-Hermione's Torture and Dobby's Help
-Skirmish with the Malfoys
-Dobby's Death
(not the burial and the Elder Wand scenes, but they can be considered part of the climax, since the film ends on a cliffhanger)

My votes:
1. Half-Blood Prince (though a bit anti-climactic during Snape's escape and HBP revelation, it was a very gloomy and sad climax)
2. Goblet of Fire (Intensely dark scenes, including Voldemort's return and the first death on screen in the series)
3. Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Though Malfoy Manor didn't live up to my expectations, the Tale of Three Brothers, the Snatcher chase and Dobby's Death at the beach are three of my favorite scenes in the entire series)
4. Order of the Phoenix (The first large wizard battle sequence, but a bit rushed at times)
5. Prisoner of Azkaban (very abstract and visually stunning, but it lacked a proper structure and didn't have a properly climactic moment, in my opinion)
6. Chamber of Secrets (Much more action-packed and darker than Philosopher's Stone. Still, quite small in scale compared to the other climaxes)
7. Philosopher's Stone (quite childish-it was made that way, so I don't complain-but rather lovely, intense and strong)

Please, don't mind mind me saying this, but... the title does sound wrong. ;-)

  • Prisoner of Azkaban's was so magical and flying buckbeak over the castle is just one of those iconic moments of the Harry Potter series, showing how magical and brilliant it truly is.

Without a doubt, Half-Blood Prince. Everything was spot on, the Drink of Despair, the Astronomy Tower, Dumbledore's death and the wand-raising, the flight of the Prince...it was haunting, chilling.

    Better now Staff?

I agree Cad. Very haunting climax. It didn't need action or anything like that. It was quiet, ominous and emotional.

There is something about POA, and i can't quite put my finger on it, but it's great... that is all. and it's still my favourite.

HBP. Everyone raising their wands in the air gets me every time. After that would be DH1.

And the title does sound wrong. What was your favorite climax, guys? ;)

This is a bloody difficult one.

SS: The most magical that makes it the classic that it is.
CoS: Basilisk was quite scary as a child, but probably my least favorite of them
PoA; Most beautiful, easily, and what amazing storytelling.
GoF: Voldemort's return, maze, need I say more?
OotP: The possession sequence alone might make this better than the rest...
HBP: Similar to PoA, no action needed for a poetic ending.
DH1: The perfect setup for Part 2

I'll go with PoA, just because it was so magical and Harry's badass moment, if you will. It was also a giant coming of age when he cast the Patronus, I could just feel it watching the film.

very difficult! All the films have something special, I can't decide which one is my favorite climax.

I have a better idea...let's rate climax of twilight movies...
    Oh wait...there is no climax!

    Wow. Difficult question.

    I would say:

    1. HPB - Did anyone really missed the battle?
    2. OoTP - For me, Dan's best performance.
    3. GoF - Voldemort's return is awesome enough to make me forget all things that I hated about this one.
    4. PoA - Despite feeling kinda long for a climax, it's really entertaining.
    5. DH1 - I was disappointed with the action at Malfoy's Manor, but Dobby's death was handled really well.
    6. PS
    7. CoS

    1. POA (Beautifully done everything is magnificent)
    2. GOF (Nice action throughout and well done)
    3. OOTP (Even if the action was quick it was still very good and dark)
    4. HBP (action and cinemtography was brilliant the opening was breathtaking)
    5. DH1 (sky battle was awesome but short :()
    6. COS ( Basilisk fight and dobby and quidditch top notch)
    7. SS (I love the action here too chess game one of the best)

Yates does the best action. And I know he hasn't had a hell of a time proving it, but wait until you see Part 2 and attempt to prove me wrong. Just wait.

I can definitely understand that opinion now, but you'll probably be eating your words after Part 2. Then again the series itself doesn't have a ton of action, so it's hard to judge Yates vs. all the others since the rest never got a crack at the epic Battle of Hogwarts.

Yes, that is exactly what i am saying... but, i have to laugh at those who say he is the best with action so far. He will certainly be the best after Part 2 but that is only because of what he is working with, not really because of him.

Actually my only disappointment with Yates is that his action scenes are short. Thank god the Battle of Hogwarts has so many different phases and is long.

Cuaron and Colombus were OK. Newell was good, but his action scenes were too bombastic and loud. So, I don't know. In fact, I might prefer Yates right now. The Ministry battle, albeit rushed, was amazing and the little action scenes throughout HBP and DH1 were quite impressive. It's the scenes length that annoys me.
  • Lord StaffordLord Stafford Posts: 27,353 ✭✭✭✭✭
I prefer Newell, but you say his were 'too bombastic and loud' right? Well, i think that works alot better than having silent ones like in the Ministry... plus, Doyle did the music, not him!

    Lord Stafford.

  • blackvenomblackvenom Posts: 3,257
Even the action was directed 'loudly'. The sound effects, the visuals, the score. Everything was too much. I like his work, don't get me wrong. But it lacks depth, I think.
  • Lord StaffordLord Stafford Posts: 27,353 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, Yates action has been sub par at best, thus far.

Yates action isn't mindless action. It's meaningful, emotional, it doesn't have to be long or whatever, it's beautiful and artsy.

When people are talking about action, one doesn't usually think of it as needing to be 'beautiful and artsy' nor do they usually look for it, they are generally looking for some intense, fast paced action.

    1. Order of the Phoenix - fast paced, exciting, unforgettable
    2. Prisoner of Azkaban - the whole climatic sequence is huge and excitingly beautiful
    3. Half Blood Prince - weaker in action, but way stronger in emotion
    4. Chamber of Secrets - while not very action-packed, it still manages to get us in the edge of our seats
    5. Philosopher's Stone - a very magical sequence, one of the many reasons PS is a classic
    6. Deathly Hallows Part 1 - it's my favorite Harry Potter movie so far, but I must admit it's very anti-climatic
    7. Goblet of Fire - the maze scene may be very cool, but the graveyard sequence is just ridiculous. Also, the loud and stupid score ruins the composition

OotP. The first time we get some dueling amongst the extended group of kids in the end and i liked it. Dumbledore vs Voldemort. I liked the flashes of past films when Harry fights off Voldemort with his mind. Then in the end "We have something Voldemort doesn't have, something worth fighting for."

I rewatched GoF yesterday and I have to say that I didn't really like the Graveyard scene, along with the entire film.

Currently, HBP's climax is my favorite. So haunting and emotional.

I've been rewatching the Potter films this week, finished Goblet of Fire today, and I have to say it is the only Potter film I dislike. I also have a new found love for Chamber of Secrets.

While it's a really entertaining film, it's so weird. Bad editing, bad acting (Fiennes, Gleeson, Richardson, Rickman and Smith are the only exceptions), bad script, cringeworthy romance...Bleh.
I have to say, though, that the techs and the major set-pieces are amazing. But it's one of the weakest (bottom 3 with CoS and OotP).
  • AshAsh Posts: 6,577 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yeah, I agree about the editing, acting, and set-pieces etc. But unfortunately I don't find it entertaining any more (I used to, it was probably one of my favourite films in the series, but now I struggle to watch it) and the script is.just.AWFUL. Chock full of terrible, cringeworthy, and often ridiculous dialogue.

Goblet of Fire is, indeed, a strange movie.
It's brilliant in so many technical aspects, while awful in so many practical aspects, such as acting, direction, script, and many others. How can we forget Dumbledore's loud and crazy moments, or Voldemort's cheesy "No!" scream at the graveyard?! It's laughable
