The first one wasn't that bad. Yes, part 2 had some truly awful stuff in it, but the robot action was good. Especially the forest fight. That's why I love Transformers. If I could, I'd edit out the other stuff LOL

I just don't care for any of the characters, the first two films just didn't stimulate me emotionally. I'll be watching the trailer though, maybe it'll change my mind. Still, it's going to pwn Part 2 at the BO in the States.
I would say Visual Effects and Art Direction, but even so those seem like stretches. We will have to see how generous the Academy feels and if there are any pet favorites that will dominate like Kings Speech did in so many categories where the film otherwise could have had somewhat of a chance.
BAFTAs? Yes. Academy Awards? Not really. I think that the film will win Art Direction, though, and possibly Visual Effects as well. It may gather some nominations in other tech categories (cinematography, score, sound editing, sound mixing, makeup) but there won't be a sweep, I'm afraid.
It also comes down to how much credence you put into the Academy. Although many filmgoers/buffs do and devote much speculation to the specifics of the ceremony, I have found that there's less satisfaction in seeing a deserving film slip through the political cracks of any given Academy year...
I would say that we have more of a chance at the BAFTAs, but perhaps we will strike some gold with Part II higher up the ranks.
I don't know...I'm trying to be optimistic about the film, but I don't think that the Academy will embrace it. Personally, I don't really care about the Academy's choices, but, let's face it, these awards are important. I hope that Part II delivers. But critics will still find a reason not to really like it. They said that Part I was boring, uneventful, confusing and didn't feel complete. They'll say that Part II is way too fast-paced, way too action-oriented and confusing, as well. Well, I sincerely hope this isn't the case, though.
If the Battle of Hogwarts is as well-executed as it sounds, VFX certainly does not seem like it's a remote possibility for Part II. There's a huge amount of effects involved in the destruction of one of the most iconic structures in fantasy cinema, and the Academy may find itself receptive to that.
Yeah I think that it has a lot of chances in the VFX category, as well as in the Art Direction one, because Craig is overdue.
I'd love to see the film getting nominated for Best Cinematography. I hope that the new trailer will stun us. I want to see more of Serra's work in Part II!
The last film that some would arguably say had the scope that Part II will have was GoF, which was nominated for Best Art Direction. With the Triwizard Tournament as a foil, Craig had the opportunity to present Hogwarts in more typically fantasy-esque ways that the Academy was receptive to. The Battle of Hogwarts will probably be the second-best film to showcase Craig's work because it demonstrates the sheer enormity of the castle in a way that hasn't been done since the fourth film and its accompanying nomination.
^Exactly! I think he'll be nominated for sure. And it's not only the amount of work he's done in Part II, but also the fact that he's overdue for a win, especially for his entire work in the series. This is the only way for the Academy to recognize him properly. It seems to me that they're waiting for the final film, in order to recognize Potter with more nominations and a few wins. I hope this is indeed the case.
What I'd like in the Battle of Hogwarts is an artsy approach to the landscapes, similar to HBP's beautiful matte paintings during the climax at the castle.
There are a lot of factors in Craig's favor, because Part II presents a lot of new, interesting and creative design opportunities for Hogwarts - additionally, this is the last chance for the Academy to further acknowledge Craig's work on the series for his department in particular. But we will have to see if the Academy is going to have any pet favorites that will also take a huge slice out of technical categories too.
I think that the only threatening films in Art Direction are War Horse and Hugo Cabret. In visuals, I think that Transformers 3 is the only threatening film, as well, but if this is indeed Potter's competition, then Potter will win. I don't know about the rest of the categories, though. DH2 has a lot of chances in Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. The Academy likes nominating war films and Potter is probably the fantasy-war film of the year. Desplat's work may be recognized if The Tree of Life's campaign and reception are not as powerful as Potter's and the film also has a chance for a Makeup nomination, since we have the Epilogue and the battle. Finally, a cinematography nod is not far-fetched at all. Serra was very close to a nomination last year, he was recognized by a lot of film awards, but they did have their pet favorites (The Social Network and The King's Speech) and he missed the nomination. I hope he's luckier this time.
I don't know about potential Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay nominations (too far-fetched, I think), but they should be taken into consideration as well.
Hugo Cabret is DEFINITELY a considerable threat for Art Direction because of its subject matter, as well as War Horse. I hope the end-of-the-line momentum and the fact that Hogwarts will become more of a dynamic set piece than ever will turn the tides in Part II's favor. I also foresee Transformers 2 as a competition in VFX but I ultimately think that Part II's usage of its effects will be more impactful for the audience because of the brand as a whole.
For me, it all depends of the critical response. For example, Tron had one of the best VFX of the past year, and as the critical response was not good at all, the Academy totally ignored.
If the press praises the movie, everything can happen!
Not necessarily. For instance, even if the film fails in all of the other categories - mostly the non-technical ones - it still has a chance of being nominated if it retains some exceptional work in the categories that its best elements actually work in - for instance, The Wolfman was not critically well-received, but it was still nominated for Best Makeup because its technical elements were sound. For Part II (although I seriously doubt a sour reception), the same could apply with respect to Art Direction because it's not entirely dependent on the other merits of the film ine very case.

Filmmakers have to campaign for their films to win Oscars.
If they do well at the box office and critically they have to do less. But if they flop or don't get any attention they have to do a lot more.
A film like this has the name and will get the attention. Both of those things will help it get nominations.
I could see WB cruising on the fact that Part II is the last chance for the Academy to recognize the franchise, one of the most financially and critically successive fantasy series of our generation outside of LotR. Even some slips in reception would not substantially take a chunk out of that momentum alone.
