2011 SUMMER MOVIE SHOWDOWN!!! Who will win?

dashape80dashape80 Posts: 1,238
edited April 2011 in General
So we've unofficially done this before but now we've seen the goods (trailers, ads, etc.) for most of the major summer movies and we can make better judgements. Obviously most of us are biased and will claim Potter will be the Box Office King but I'm more interested in the numbers we think all the other flicks are going to bring in.

So copy this list and guestimate the Box Office cash (or just number from highest grossing to lowest . . . whatever). I've listed any summer movie that could potentially be a summer blockbuster.

THOR - May 6

BRIDESMAIDS - May 13

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 - May 20

THE HANGOVER 2 - May 26
KUNG FU PANDA 2 - May 26

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS - June 3

SUPER 8 - June 10

GREEN LANTERN - June 17

CARS 2 - June 24

TRANSFORMERS 3 - July 1

HARRY POTTER DH Part 2 - July 15

CAPTAIN AMERICA - July 22

COWBOYS & ALIENS - July 29

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - August 5

DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK - August 12

CONAN THE BARBARIAN - August 19
FRIGHT NIGHT - August 19
SPY KIDS 4 - August 19

FINAL DESTINATION 5 - August 26

HP will win all da wayyyyy! There's no competition against it. It will be the most successful for the audience and at the box office. No other movie will beat it. Simple like that! :)

What saddens me is that Transformers will make more than Super 8.

If you contribute to this fact, fuck you.

You're kidding. Transformers will flatline Super 8 at the box office. It's a crying shame, however.

It's obvious that DH2 will win the WorldWide battle, and I think it wont even be close, however.. Domestically we will have our hands full.

I've already given my DHpart2 prediction on that other thread, but I do also think it will be the only one of those movies to make $1Billion. Pirates will end up around $940 million WW and Transformers will do around $850 million WW.

Deathly Hallows Part 2 is the only one of those movies with a finale factor, and to be honest its just going to be a better movie. I usually can't say this about Potter movies because they are slow to non-fans but this movie will all anyone can handle plus some. The re-watch value on DHpart2 will greatly exceed any Potter.

Edit* Green Lantern and X-men will dissapoint at the BO.

Massive face palm if that happens LOL.

Still, Bridesmaids has potential to be a sleeper blockbuster (similar to The Hangover - no one is expecting it to be that great than out of nowhere it's extremely popular making tons of cash).

Obviously I'm going to agree with you but I think Transformers 3 and Super 8 can give it a run for its money domestically.

Transformers attracts more of the general audience (since the last one made a fortune domestically) and Super 8 has some crazy buzz. Again, worldwide Potter wins hands down but most of the boxoffice websites only care about U.S. domestic totals and crown the winner based on those numbers.

I think the only ones this summer that will give Potter any serious competition is Transformers and maybe Pirates.
I think it'll be close 2nd weekend with Capt. America. But I think Potter could just edge Cap out for first place 2nd week.

Transformers only does good because it has action and explosions. Part 2 has that and much more. :-D

This is boxoffice . com's long term predictions through June 10th. The two biggest money makers in this time frame they're prediction is Pirates (around 300 mill for worldwide) and Kung Fu Panda 2 (320 mill world wide)

All I care about is how good it is. I don't give two fucking craps how much money it makes. The filmmakers are all pretty much filthy rich already. I have no personal reason at all to care how much money it makes. The only reason people give a shit is so that they can say that their personal favorite makes more money than everyone else's. I'd rather be able to sit down and give legitimate reasons why my personal favorite is better, quality-wise, instead of pointing at box office numbers, which are about as irrelevant as a Rotten Tomatoes score.

Not trying to say that everyone interested in the box office is some moron, but I see more of an emphasis on "OHHH ITS GOTTA CROSS A BILLIONS!!!" than anything else. Am I seriously the only one who just does not care? If Transformers 3 makes more money, but Part 2 is the movie that I think it's going to be, I'm not going to lose sleep over that because it doesn't fucking matter.

DH2 will take the worldwide over the summer and Pirates will be second.

Domestically TF3 will probably take it but it could be closer than I expect.

Kung Fu Panda 2 and Cars 2 will do well domestically but they won't come close to any of the live action films.

Final Destination 5? Really? That has got to be a joke. Talk about an idea being stretched out for way too long.

I agree that this will be sad. I am a big Abrams fan :-) and I hope this film does really well.

Will you hate me if I see both?

So the Super 8 teaser was shown before Scream 4 here, and when the "Super 8" title came up at the end it was met with laughter, and general murmurs of "what a lame title" and "surely they could have come up with a better title." I could have wept.

I look at it like this.

If it's good, by some miracle of Judas, it will probably be a very nice spectacle. He's got cameramen skydiving with skydiving characters and IMAX/3D cameras that are so powerful that they have ventilation.
If it sucks, it'll be nothing new, and at least I will have seen the film so that I can participate in proper debate.

I just got off the phone with Satan to make sure that their Super 8 hotel rooms are booked in hell.

Just shows how friggin idiotic movie audiences have become over the years. If this were the 80's, Super 8 would be like THE TALK.

    God people are fucking stupid.
  • BaneBane Posts: 9,869 ✭✭✭✭✭
They lap up Transformers like its the goddamn Godfather but something that looks legitimately GOOD gets swept under the rug because it's not a big obvious IN YOUR FACE wankfest like Transformers is.

Also shows how uneducated people are, Super 8 is the name of a FUCKING CAMERA.

    You know, because

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON is just a genius title.

I like that you are taking this approach. So much better than judging it without seeing it.

The cameras they are using are insanely good. The picture quality should be the one thing that will be good even if the rest of the film is not.

Well, I don't dislike things "just because." I was excited for the first Transformers, thought it was a bit too dumb for my tastes but it had moments of good entertainment. Still didn't think too highly of it though.

I was excited for the second film because Bay promised that it would be darker and not as humor oriented, but it ended up being even worse in almost every aspect.

So, I don't really know what to think. Dark of the Moon certainly looks like it's going to be better than the second one and I think he has some very ambitious things going on in it, but it needs to be a lot better than even the first film if I'm going to have any chance of enjoying it.

I see your point completely and agree to a certain extent however, I just find it fun to track and watch the Box office. What makes it more fun is when you see your favorites come out on top (the competitive side of me I guess).

In the end i know it doesn't matter at all and quality is WAY more important but I still find enjoyment in it. I know other people don't care and that's fine but I don't lose sleep over it . . . I just think it's fun.

It can be fun but it gets kind of sad when it's all people seem to talk/care about. Like it's the most important shit in the world for it to cross BILLIONS!!!!

Part 1 didn't, and it satisfied many people, even some like myself who consider it to be far and away the best installment yet. I don't even know how much it made because its a non-issue. People liked it, studio got profit, cast and crew have more money than we'll ever see in our lifetimes.

I'm the same way. It's just fun to watch and track it. On Mugglenet, there is a guy there who gathers all the info on ticket sales and box office for all the HP movies and then people post their predictions on what the box office will be for the new movie. Just a fun little contest for the fans on the forum when the new movies come out. I ultimately don't really care if it crosses a billion or not. I mean, would it be cool if it did? Yes. But I'm not staking my life on it or anything.

I am probably in the minority on this but thats how I felt about Avatar. I did not go see it in the theater because I didn't see anything in it except the visuals.

This was solidified when I finally saw it on dvd. I am not directly comparing these films but people like pretty and flashy stuff.

I like TF because I loved Transformers as a kid and I like seeing them on the big screen.

I have a feeling Captain America is going to over take Potter at the Domestic box office. Every blog I see about this Summer's movie line-up, when they ask which is your most anticipated, barely anyone puts HP on their list. They have Captain America on #1.

Might mean nothing, but still, kind of interesting.

Well the difference is that Avatar isn't loaded with dumb shit that destroys my brain cells. It may not have a superbly original story but it was very well done and enjoyable and the action was fantastic.

Transformers is 2+ hours of horrible immaturity and lame sexual innuendos and poorly shot action. So yeah, I'd say Avatar is vastly superior.

Yeah, I've seen this a lot online too. For some reason the online film community is just buzzing over Captain American and I don't get it (childhood memories perhaps?). I personally think the trailer looks TERRIBLE.

Seriously I don't get the hype over Super 8. I mean, yes it looks good, but not anything really great.
Captain America looks lame. Seriously, is this going to be the film which will compete Deathly Hallows in late July? I actually think that DH2, given the 3D and finale factor, will surpass Captain America in its second weekend. Not by much, but it will.

I think that the final figures will be equal, if not closer than Part 1 with Tangled in its second weekend.

For me, I think JJ Abrams is a fantastic director who actually understands how to separate spectacle from stupidity, he's always bringing new things to the table, he can direct action very well, and in general the film is a throwback to Steven Spielberg's heyday of summer blockbusters. If Steven isn't going to do it as much as he used to anymore, I'd definitely be fine with someone like Abrams taking the reigns.

In addition to this, Michael Giacchino is scoring it and 20 minutes were shown to incredibly, incredibly positive impressions. Super 8 is basically the summer blockbuster that other summer blockbusters wish they could be-- you can go ahead and mark my words down right now. Obviously Harry Potter is my most anticipated film of the year, but it's not hard for me to pick my second.
