2011 SUMMER MOVIE SHOWDOWN!!! Who will win?
So we've unofficially done this before but now we've seen the goods (trailers, ads, etc.) for most of the major summer movies and we can make better judgements. Obviously most of us are biased and will claim Potter will be the Box Office King but I'm more interested in the numbers we think all the other flicks are going to bring in.
So copy this list and guestimate the Box Office cash (or just number from highest grossing to lowest . . . whatever). I've listed any summer movie that could potentially be a summer blockbuster.
THOR - May 6
BRIDESMAIDS - May 13
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 - May 20
THE HANGOVER 2 - May 26
KUNG FU PANDA 2 - May 26
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS - June 3
SUPER 8 - June 10
GREEN LANTERN - June 17
CARS 2 - June 24
TRANSFORMERS 3 - July 1
HARRY POTTER DH Part 2 - July 15
CAPTAIN AMERICA - July 22
COWBOYS & ALIENS - July 29
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - August 5
DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK - August 12
CONAN THE BARBARIAN - August 19
FRIGHT NIGHT - August 19
SPY KIDS 4 - August 19
FINAL DESTINATION 5 - August 26

If you contribute to this fact, fuck you.
Overall- DH2 or Super 8.
I've already given my DHpart2 prediction on that other thread, but I do also think it will be the only one of those movies to make $1Billion. Pirates will end up around $940 million WW and Transformers will do around $850 million WW.
Deathly Hallows Part 2 is the only one of those movies with a finale factor, and to be honest its just going to be a better movie. I usually can't say this about Potter movies because they are slow to non-fans but this movie will all anyone can handle plus some. The re-watch value on DHpart2 will greatly exceed any Potter.
Edit* Green Lantern and X-men will dissapoint at the BO.
Mysterious thing time.
Hope you like it!
Still, Bridesmaids has potential to be a sleeper blockbuster (similar to The Hangover - no one is expecting it to be that great than out of nowhere it's extremely popular making tons of cash).
NO DOUBT.
G.G.
Transformers attracts more of the general audience (since the last one made a fortune domestically) and Super 8 has some crazy buzz. Again, worldwide Potter wins hands down but most of the boxoffice websites only care about U.S. domestic totals and crown the winner based on those numbers.
I think it'll be close 2nd weekend with Capt. America. But I think Potter could just edge Cap out for first place 2nd week.
This is boxoffice . com's long term predictions through June 10th. The two biggest money makers in this time frame they're prediction is Pirates (around 300 mill for worldwide) and Kung Fu Panda 2 (320 mill world wide)
Not trying to say that everyone interested in the box office is some moron, but I see more of an emphasis on "OHHH ITS GOTTA CROSS A BILLIONS!!!" than anything else. Am I seriously the only one who just does not care? If Transformers 3 makes more money, but Part 2 is the movie that I think it's going to be, I'm not going to lose sleep over that because it doesn't fucking matter.
Domestically TF3 will probably take it but it could be closer than I expect.
Kung Fu Panda 2 and Cars 2 will do well domestically but they won't come close to any of the live action films.
Final Destination 5? Really? That has got to be a joke. Talk about an idea being stretched out for way too long.
Will you hate me if I see both?
OMG! We avoided death and now it's coming to get us...
If it's good, by some miracle of Judas, it will probably be a very nice spectacle. He's got cameramen skydiving with skydiving characters and IMAX/3D cameras that are so powerful that they have ventilation.
If it sucks, it'll be nothing new, and at least I will have seen the film so that I can participate in proper debate.
God people are fucking stupid.
Also shows how uneducated people are, Super 8 is the name of a FUCKING CAMERA.
TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON is just a genius title.
The cameras they are using are insanely good. The picture quality should be the one thing that will be good even if the rest of the film is not.
I was excited for the second film because Bay promised that it would be darker and not as humor oriented, but it ended up being even worse in almost every aspect.
So, I don't really know what to think. Dark of the Moon certainly looks like it's going to be better than the second one and I think he has some very ambitious things going on in it, but it needs to be a lot better than even the first film if I'm going to have any chance of enjoying it.
In the end i know it doesn't matter at all and quality is WAY more important but I still find enjoyment in it. I know other people don't care and that's fine but I don't lose sleep over it . . . I just think it's fun.
Part 1 didn't, and it satisfied many people, even some like myself who consider it to be far and away the best installment yet. I don't even know how much it made because its a non-issue. People liked it, studio got profit, cast and crew have more money than we'll ever see in our lifetimes.
This was solidified when I finally saw it on dvd. I am not directly comparing these films but people like pretty and flashy stuff.
I like TF because I loved Transformers as a kid and I like seeing them on the big screen.
Might mean nothing, but still, kind of interesting.
Transformers is 2+ hours of horrible immaturity and lame sexual innuendos and poorly shot action. So yeah, I'd say Avatar is vastly superior.
Captain America looks lame. Seriously, is this going to be the film which will compete Deathly Hallows in late July? I actually think that DH2, given the 3D and finale factor, will surpass Captain America in its second weekend. Not by much, but it will.
In addition to this, Michael Giacchino is scoring it and 20 minutes were shown to incredibly, incredibly positive impressions. Super 8 is basically the summer blockbuster that other summer blockbusters wish they could be-- you can go ahead and mark my words down right now. Obviously Harry Potter is my most anticipated film of the year, but it's not hard for me to pick my second.
