Harry Potter vs Twilight?

edited January 2009 in General
Hi everyone,
If you are a Twilight fan, you would probably of noticed that at the back of one of the books, someone had said:
'Move over, Harry Potter'

I feel quite annoyed about this remark.
They are both fantasy books, yes, but they are both completely different.

Harry Potter is a book about Dark wizards, spells, duelling magicaly, classes etc.

The Twilight series is about vampires, teenage drama, love etc.

See, completely different!

So nobody should say for Harry Potter to 'move over' because, even though they are both fantasy, they are not compared to eachother!

Does anyone know what I am talking about?

Does anyone agree with me?
PS- They both rock, so stop COMPARING THEM!

Having read both the full Twilight series and the full Harry Potter series I can also say with complete confidence that they couldn't be more different. (One of them actually has a plot that doesn't sound like it was fueled by an illegal substance, for example)

Twilight is, as you said, centered around first love, teen romance and all that jazz. Harry Potter covers a whole range of different subjects; action (Don't tell me Breaking Dawn has action. If ever there was an anti-climax it was that book. I wouldn't count anything else in the series as true action, but that's just my opinion), romance, and all that other good stuff. It touches on morality, issues with death and treatment of non-human creatures. I know Twilight has some of that, but not in the depth Harry Potter does.

You're completely right; they shouldn't be compared. Not in any way at all.

The only similarity I could find is that they both have an extremely devoted fan-base. That's it.

    Yes, it pisses me off

People who make those sort of comments are either stupid or incredibly ignorant.
  • Hehe...Harry Potter series are far better and more sold.

THIS(caps) Grabs Your Attention More. And I Saw Twilight And It Had No Action Or A Great Story Like Harry Potter Does.Only One Action Part And Thats On The End.NOT THAT GOOD.
  • Wilbo421Wilbo421 Posts: 1,157
It doesn't grab my attention more, it's irritating. The way this websites laid out, you don't need to use caps at all cause you're guaranteed pretty much every post is going to be read.
  • I consider myself the ultimate harry potter fan in my family and i like the twilight series the movie was nothing compared to the book. the harry potter movies are definately better and closer to the books. I have and will always be a hp fan first!! They are two totally different stories! im also glad to join you guys never knew this existed
  • LOL, Joanna_photographer!

    Thanx 4 ur comments, guys.

hey - i am in love with both twilight and harry potter and don't compare them - they are nothing alike!
anyways - ye i don't know why there is a twilight vs harry potter! weird and very very strange in my opinion!
  • I agree, there's definitley no similarity between Twilight and Harry Potter. You could argue that there are vampires in Harry's world, of course, but they're definitley not the same and there's not really much of a focus on them.

Also, Twilight is really written for teenage girls more than anything else (I know this because it's being a teenage girl that makes me love them... and of course, whenever my boyfriend says or does anything remotely lovely I think 'WOW, he's almost as amazing as Edward!')

I would have to say that Harry Potter is better though - there was much more thought and effort put into it, and so much detail, whereas Twilight was never intended to be published at first.
  • Ugh I HATE Twilight... and I thought this forum was my haven from that book.

    lol.

My friends and I call Bella Isabellend Birdy and Edward Edvardo. It annoys people at our school lol.

i luv both series equally and (this is just me) could never choose.yes twilight is really completely focused on teenage girls whereas harry potter can be understood and loved by anyone(if they're willing).it touches on your beliefs;do believe in good prevailing?do you believe in an afterlife?
twilight just focuses on love only, different kinds of love yes, but still that's it.twilight is just sending a message ,whether stephenie thinks so or not,
for you to trust in the one you love and build confidence, at least that's what i got from it.
but really on the whole HP V.S. twilight thing, i'm SWITZERLAND!
  • Twilight was ok the first go around when it first started coming out but then when they said that they were going to do a movie everyone loses their minds! Harry Potter is way more warm feeling and just makes you want to snuggle down with a cup of hot chocolate and dig into and cry for Harry. Not sit there and listen to Bella's whiney excuses about Edward.

    HARRY POTTER IS BETTER THAN:
    lord of the rings
    twilight
    chronicles of narnia
    series of unfortunate events
    star wars
AND EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS WORLD!PERIOD.
  • yeah well i totally agree that the hp series is the best and any way ,the only reason they put that comment at the end of twilight is because harry potter
is the best and most well known book series.
Also let it be noted that they put stuff like that at the end of a lot of books
    e.g
being a spy in miniature is so cooler than being a wizard.
    from the Alex rider series

  • That's stupid, being a wizard or witch would be freakin' awesome!
  • RichardRichard Posts: 48,703 mod
Harry potter dosnt mess with anyone so why do people mess with Harry Potter? Some people dont understand the magic.Twilight shouldnt even have that comment.

    i agree! :)
i love both books but they could'nt compare twillight to harry potter, or should i say they "should'nt".
but ill answer the question anyways: in terms of movie and the plot of story i go for harry potter OFCOURSE:)
but for the book hmm it would be 75% for Twilight and 25% for HP
  • i absolutely LOVE both books and could NEVER choose one over the other!!!!!!!!!
they are both amazing in their own ways and should never be compared
i do have to admit they did a fabulous job with the hp movies and completely failed at the twilight movie
but that has nothing to do with the books which are both equally amazing!!!!!!!!!
also for anyone who likes both hp and twilight another amazing book series which you would love is the Mortal Instruments. it is a trilogy. the first book is The City of Bones, the seond book is City of Ashes and the third book is City of Glass. READ THEM :)
  • I am glad that I am not the only one bothered by that fact. When I saw that 'move over Harry Potter' thing I was really frustrated by it... as trivial as it is... I was. I like Twilight the movie, not so much the books because in reality who in the world would like Bella? she's such a jerk. ugh.

Harry Potter is on a whole different level... even though its fantasy it is still a different genre... if the two are going to be compared you might as well compare Twilight to Lord of the Rings... geebus. It's annoying.
  • Well I read Twilight first - I must admit :(
and When i'd finished the series for what the seventh time, I though to myself nothing can beat it!
    Until I read Harry Potter.
They are both equally marvelous but as Midnight Spells and Arcenciel said, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!
So i'd stop comparing them becauses it does piss me off a lot.

I mean vampires, love, werewolves etc.. and wizards, magic, spells, bad and good - totally different!

So yeah, stop comparing them >.<

I totally agree of you guys. I mean, to compare these books would be like comparing salt and sugar( theyre both usually white, and these both are fantasy books, nothing more).

The nerve of that.. soooo sh!t I hate seeing that part.. "Move over Harry Potter" o.O
Twilight .. more for girls. hate it.
Harry Potter for everyone.. whatever you are.. make sense?
  • I love both book series but I totally agree that they should not be compared with each other because they really are quite different..

yer larcsuke01 is so right! twilight is more girly and i barely look at the back of Breaking Dawn now because of that comment - i picked it up immediately and was like 'WTH!' and i was standing there with my mouth open like a golfish until my mum nudged me and i handed it to her in a weird daze so she could pay!
I hate that comment so much!
but i love twilight - it's more fantasy love and it is a love story, wheras harry potter is for everyone - i know twilight is too - but more of a range of kids from age i dunno 6 to adults of about 99 are harry potter fans!
i think they made a horrible mess of that comment 'move over harry potter' because in NO WAY, in all it's years as books and films, will it move over for a vampire land with brill, relatable characters in it! i mean, harry has more even BETTER characters and couples, it's complicated but not too much, it's got everything for everyone - love, horror, comedy, and that ULTIMATE crucial thing in fantasy which is clearer in harry potter than it twilight - good vs evil! i know, i know, the volturi and the wolves but they learn how to make PEACE with each other and so noone gets killed and it is happy ever after with nessie, cullens and the wolf pack - featuring some incredibly hot men but that's not important lol
harry potter has hot men too! maybe not vampires but remember where R-Pattz came from! remember where you saw him first!

i don't even get why twilight is so popular. i think the author's way of writing is boring, and it's mostly teenage girls who read twilight only because it has a goodlooking, romantic and mysterious vampire guy-thingy. why anyone would compare that to harry potter?

harry potter can take twilight any day!!!!!!!!! edward cullen may be hot but harry potter doesn't just have one hot guy, there's so many to pick from!
for the bad girls, there's draco, there's the hero, harry, the moody one, ron, the older dark and dangerous man, severus, the brooding hearthrob, sirius, the sophisticated man, remus, do i need to go on?
i like the harry potter books more becuase there's more depth. i think they're jsut mroe interesting!
  • well ive almost compleated all twilight series and long finished the hps althrough i read them over and over ! i think that each has there advanteges but harry potter brill beacusse of it brillnes in genral has been heavily publicysed with the movies and the fact that jk is more of a celeb [no offense ] an twilight has the romance and super guy but stephanie meyar has never really done tv an intervues type thing i do admit hp is my fave and twilight is no ay as good twight does have its advanteges not just the guy

Watched Twilight not long ago LOVE IT! Wanna read the books
    Pattinson is HOT!
  • Please don't even try to compare Harry Potter to Twilight. Stephen King said it all when he said, "Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good." From a pure literary stand point Meyer is just a terrible writer. She doesn't know how to move a plot. Her ideas for a story were great, but she makes the boring feel boring. Rowling can turn a day at school into a living dream. Simply said, Jo Rowling is an amazing writer, Meyer, just sucks.
