It's kind of ironic that this transpired on a street called South Carefree because I'd be willing to bet that people weren't feeling all that carefree when this was happening.

People put more faith into their tires than they should. In winter, you can have winter tires put on your vehicle, but what matters the most on slick roads is more of a combination of how to treat the gas pedal, how to NOT slam on your brakes or even rely on them, the weight of your vehicle, etc. Winter tires are only there to help out as much as possible but when you put a 2 ton vehicle on a slick surface, it becomes borderline impossible to manage speed and stopping efficiency.
A lot of people, if they're in a big truck with four wheel drive, or have "suitable" tires for these conditions, believe that they're impervious to slick roads.
