I HAVE A NEW FAVORITE POTTER FILM!!
this movie made us laugh cry and scream
review notes:
Seven potters was a little quick but it looked better on film...very exciting!
Obliviate gave me CHILLS...the whole openning was AWESOME
We then move to the burrow where theres a nice performace from David Thewlis when he questions harry
The wedding was very good..a bit quick but the pacing was alright for me...attack was quick and dramatic..loved it!
Cafe Attack was great...the bit where ron suggests they kill the DEs is chilling
Grimmauld place was cool...piano scene was Cute as heck, the r/hr hand scene seemed to be in(i heard several awwws), and kreacher and dobbys returns were the funniest things ever! Dobby was THE BIGGEST HIT FOR OUR THEATRE
On to the Ministry scene, which impressed me alot!, the tension was there and thesets were sooo cool, the detenators were awesome, imelda staunton delivers again, rons "kiss" with mary cattermole was soo funny, and the chase was very dramatic
The scene where ron gets splinched was very well acted..emma was superb in this scene!!
Rons jealously is set up well, starting after a great added scene in which harry and hermione try to destroy the locket.
The fight was amazing, as expected, and rupert dan and emma were each awesome in it.
The dance scene was soooo nice!, not sexual at all..just a nice sweet moment between the two friends IMO
Godrics Hallows impressed me in a good way, the graveyard scene made me tear up as harry delivers a great line "Merry Christmas Hermione", then we go to bathildas house which proved to be the creepiest scene ive ever seen in a potter film/
The nagini attack was epic! and harry and hermione apparate out of a window!
Dan and Emma had good chemistry during these scenes
Rons return is one of my favorite scenes, you get a first person view from harrys POV as hes being saved...EPIC
THE HORCRUX DESTRUCTION..WOW THAT KISS WAS HOT!! AND RUPERTS REACTION WAS SPOT ON...one of my favorite scenes.
Rons speech about how hermione calling his name and the ball of light going in his heart was sweet and a R/HR shippers dream!
The three brothers animation was AMAZING....It felt like a short movie...soo cool!!
Rhys Ifans as Xeno was one of my favorite parts of this film..the attack on the house is fast paced and fiery and it leads to the snatcher chase which was DAMN RIGHT EPIC....the shaky camera worked well
Malfoy Manor was great!...dobbys return was sweet and Emma in the torture scene made my gasp..INCREDIBLE.\
Helena, Tom, andJason did sooo good in their short roles in this scene...but here it goes
MY FAVORITE SCENE OF THE FILM WAS DOBBYS DEATH/BURIAL..I CRIED(YES IM A WIMP)
The little guys speech was PERFECT!!...Dans best scene EVER and one of my favorite scenes ever!!
The ending with voldy was quick and epic!
STAND OUTS- RUPERT, EMMA, DAN,RHYS IFANS, IMELDA STAUNTON, JASON ISSACS
BEST COMEDIC SCENE- RONS RETURN
ACTION SCENE- MINISTRY
SAD SCENE- OF COURSE DOBBY!

OUT OF TEN I GIVE IT A 9.6...IT WAS PERFECT..I LAUGHED, I CRIED AND I CANT WAIT TO SEE IT IN A FEW DAYS
OSCARS FOR DESPLAT AND SERRA(LANDSCAPES WERE GREAT)

side notes:
krums cut
harrys bday is mentioned
the doe is A DOE!
Maybe a little side boob
ginny harry kiss was good..shocker! Nevilles line was good..Seamus cormac Blaise Ginny and I think lavender appeared in that scene

Notable mentions- The Phelps Twins, David Thewlis, Nick Moran, Tom Felton and of course Ralph!!!

TOP 5 FAVORITE SCENES
DOBBYS DEATH

I didn't like it. . . I thought the cinematography was great as always, but they made everything into comedy. The book for me was very dark and serious and depressing. Voldemort is suppose to be scary/evil in it, and I just felt like he was too "nice"( i know the word sucks to describe it but it's all i can think of) and how they put funny moments in with the serious/sad scenes. . . They also didn't make it obvious that harry defeated Draco at Malfoy manor... which is just something that I pictured as kind of a big scene .. and also bellatrix wasn't her usual dark/evil self...

too much humor going on, i couldn't take it seriously. My theater laughed at parts that shouldn't have been funny.

Although I do think that this was Emma Watson's best film as far as her acting goes.

    but hey that's just me. . .

Oh. Is this the first negative review on this forum ?
  • BlackCatScottBlackCatScott Posts: 1,332 ✭✭✭
There were a lot of funny moments thrown in there, more than I expected. But I can live with it if they make the last one ultra dark!

But you guys don't get it. A film does not work without comedy. EVERY FILM has comedy. And if you didn't notice, Harry Potter films in general have comedy, a lot of it. It still works, it doesn't take away from the feel of the film. I think part of the reason is because you have an entire theater cracking up, and THAT is what takes away from the experience. Watch it alone on your own.

Hamlet is full of wisecracks, and at the end everybody dies. That's the way stories work.
  • Festax0333Festax0333 Posts: 11,753 ✭✭✭✭✭
Imo it was the best...the comedy was great....there wasn't that much

I disagree... Of course a film has to have comedy, and I know Harry Potter in general has a lot, but I think it was too much. Bellatrix and Voldemort, I couldn't take them seriously. I don't like how they put funny moments in serious scenes. Like when Bellatrix was torturing Hermionie, and they put the Dobby scene in it.. i mean, of course Dobby is suppose to be funny, but this book is different than the others, it's darker and more depressing because it's the end. Also how Bellatrix didn't use the crucio spell, it' just little things like that , that are unnecessary to change, I can't see how it would be more difficult to just get it right. In GoF, Voldemort gave me the creeps in the grave yard, cuz he's suppose to. He's suppose to be evil/intimidating through out the whole series. I didn't feel that in this movie. Bellatrix wasn't her usual self either. I thought Lucius had the right feeling of it though, I didn't find him comical, cuz he's suppose to be grieving for his household and family. So he was good. . . They also skipped a lot of moments in the scenes they put in. Like the beginning, Harry and Dudley don't have their "moment". When they leave out that stuff, it kind of loses the meaning of HP for me... I just didn't really like it. I hope that he last one will be alright. but for now, PoA is still my favorite.
Hamlet is full of wisecracks, and at the end everybody dies. That's the way stories work.
All of Shakespeare's work is based on comedy/tragedy. That's how he wrote.... Jk Rowling however, put comical characters through out the series who would make certain scenes funny . . . The two Authors write differently, it doesn't matter what the story line is, you cant' just group it together like that...

so haley u hated it? I mean HATED or do u like it?
  • haley11haley11 Posts: 420
I never said I hated it.... I just said that I didn't really like it. I thought the acting was good and the cinematography was excellent, but I thought the directing was poor. This is my rating for the movie series:

    1. PoA
    2. GoF
    3. CoS
    4. HBP
    5. SS
    6. DH p1
    7. OoTP

But guys, that's just me.... if we didn't have diverse HP fans, this forum wouldn't be very interesting cuz we would just agree on everything... I think it's good to have different opinions, don't you?

Well, roughly the same list as Richard's.

I've thought it through and even though I haven't seen DH yet, I think my order will be like this:

    DH
    POA/HBP
    OOTP/GOF
    PS
    COS

I think POA and HBP are around about the same quality (although POA is slighty better in a few areas, but HBP's foreshadowing, symbolism and cinematography elevate the film) and some aspects of OOTP are better than some elements of GOF and vice versa.
  • RichardRichard Posts: 48,703 mod
yes haley but there must be more to that.

what was the worst scene in the film?

Obviously I'm not going to put Rowling and Shakespeare in the same category. I just think the comic balance was about right.
I can't think of a way to make the movie better without making it longer.

One think I haven't seen mentioned, and that is the reason for omitting Dumbledore's backstory.

It was mentioned, so moviegoers know it exists. But it doesn't have to be told twice, and it will be much more cinematic coming from Dumbledore himself, at King's Cross.

They need a flashback in part 2.
  • haley11haley11 Posts: 420
    Malfoy Manor/ Dobby's death/ Voldemort needing a wand from a death eater

Dobby's death wasn't special to me... Harry is suppose to be alone for the last of it. and Griphook is suppose to see. They didnt' do the grave thing really.

Malfoy Manor: Ron wasn't worried enough for Hermionie... and wormtail's death doesn't happen... Bellatrix doesn't make me hate her like she does in the books... the whole mudblood on the arm thing seems cheesy (even though it would hurt a ton, good screaming/acting on emma's part there) but she didn't use the crucio spell like she does in the book... all the death eaters in that scene are suppose to be very snobby and evil... and they weren't.

and voldemort again, wasn't creepy/evil enough... he was too nice-sounding when he was speaking to them. He's suppose to be pissed off and commanding. . .

it's like he was being too polite

oh and in godrics hollow, voldemort doesn't appear and see them getting away again, when i was reading that in the books, my heart was racing when harry knew that voldemort was going to be there in just seconds, but he didn't show up in the movie.. i was disappointed

  • RichardRichard Posts: 48,703 mod
ALL that stuff is comparing it to the book. When i do that i dislike it more. Try not to think that the book exists see it as a film, not an adaptation.
  • haley11haley11 Posts: 420
I didn't like the scene Ron was seeing in the horcrux when he was about to destroy it... to be honest, It kinda grossed me out.. it was too porno for me haha. I don't think they needed to be naked, and the kiss didn't need to be that passionate. I think it would have been better if it was more evil, like harry and hermionie in the horcrux had evil smiles on their faces and then just did a simple french kiss, thats all.... it was too sensual for hp... but that's just me again.
  • haley11haley11 Posts: 420
not really though richard, bellatrix and voldemort i was disappointed the most about... and i was comparing them to their past performances in ootp and gof.
  • RichardRichard Posts: 48,703 mod
I loved their performances! And i loved the KISS!

I actually disagree. There was a moment in Malfoy Manor where Voldemort yells "Wormtail! Haven't I reminded you about keeping our guest quiet!" And he was really pissed, etc. I didn't think it sounded very good. He is better when he is talking normally.

Well then I guess that Ralph fiennes wasn't a good enough actor in this movie if he couldn't portray voldemort correctly. Cuz i think he did an excellent job in GOF and he was evil and pissed off there. he was also polite/talked normally, it was equal...

My theater laughed at places that I didn't really think we're funny at all. They would laugh and I would be like "....?"

I actually didn't really find the shot of Dobby unscrewing the chandelier funny at all. But that's just me.

And then, did you see that shot of Voldemort looking at Lucius after he takes his wand? He just looked so angry. I think Voldemort is great. The smile he gives Dumbledore's corpse after he takes the wand says all the things he was thinking in the book. It's great.
