POSITIVE QUOTES:

"Overall, "Deathly Hallows" should be judged as the best "Potter" since Alfonso Cuaron's "Prisoner of Azkaban," but we'll know more when "Part 2" hits theaters in July, 2011."

"Forget the terrific Toy Story 3, the mind-bending magnificence of Inception or the grisly thrills of The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows is the film every Muggle has been eagerly awaiting this year."

"It is a film about emotions, about characters, about friendship first and foremost and it all happens to take place in a magical world. It’s what every single avid Harry Potter reader has been waiting for years."

This is true, only RottenTomatoes fails to count reviews. So it should stand at a solid 94%, but it goes instead at an 80%.

And actually, the IMDB thread has one review wrong. There are two pages to one review, the latter page of which explains that it is actually a negative review. So 18 reviews in all 16 positive, 2 negative, which pins that film at an 88% percent, tied with GOF for second place.

  • yeah I noticed the negative review in the positive ones, omg I hope all these positive reviews goes to rottentomatoes!!

  • Oh. It's so good to see that the movie is getting more positive reviews! I just woke up. I'm so happy. LOL

The Daily Express one is really good, isn't it? I hope they add to RT soon!

    Two more positive reviews!

The first one is very positive.
The second one is rather positive as well. :)

"The big strength of this movie is that it doesn’t rush. It allows time for the three leading performers in a way that the previous films haven’t. "

Another mention from a critic that the middle section has more benefits than flaws.
  • blackvenomblackvenom Posts: 3,257
    So

    22 positive reviews
    2 negative

    :D
  • I'm completely happy about the reviews! I mean, the 2 negative reviews are so badly written... and there are really good positive reviews posted!

I'm just exploding inside xD LOL
  • Yeah, LCbaseball22, there is.

I was hoping for more 4/5's atleast.
  • blackvenomblackvenom Posts: 3,257
I dunno but the second Daily Mail review is highly positive.

I'm hoping DH II will get far more 4/5s and 5/5s!
Anyway now I think the average rating at rottentomatoes.com will settle at something like 6.5/10-6.8/10, which will make it a solid movie but the lowest rated HP film!
Let's hope the 2nd one gets at least a 7.5!
By comparison GOF is at 7.4/10, POA at 7.8/10, the last Star Wars film at 7.4/10, and the last LOTR at 8.6/10.
  • This is London review is kinda mixed, huh?
  • RoupenRoupen Posts: 218
Oh and Iron Man 2 was 6.6/10 whil the 2nd Narnia 6.2/10!
The only sequel i could think of whose mediocre or mixed reception (with respect to its previous installment) had no effect on its box office run was the 2nd POTC film, but let's face it, the visuals and Depp were the real audience grabbers here! DH1 neither has such a popular actor and doesn't look half as good as DMC, or even POA!
  • blackvenomblackvenom Posts: 3,257
This is London review is mixed but positive.

Roupen what are you talking about?
We've got 24 reviews. 22 of them are positive. 10-11 are actually REALLY REALLY positive.
We'll get another bunch of almost 200 reviews. It's too early to judge how the film will do.

I still think it'll beat PS/CoS and GoF for me, just because I like the story. I'm looking forward to it today as much as I was four months ago, the bad reviews (and really, most of them aren't great, even the majority of the 'positive' reviews are actually mixed/ on the verge of a negative) won't deter from seeing it or alter my judgements in any way.

  • Guys. It's very interesting that most of the complains it's about the darkness and the maturity of the movie. I thought critics were going to praise that...
  • AshAsh Posts: 6,577 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yeah, I've noticed that in a few reviews too, this is something I like about the recent movies (and books) so I'm not bothered.
    image
  • Me too, Cadmus. The audience has grown up!
  • blackvenomblackvenom Posts: 3,257
Cadmus there are reviews that are very very positive (Variety, IMA, Telegraph, Screen Daily, Daily Mail, Independent). The rest of the positive ones do have complaints but they all liked the film.

It's strange that the complaints are the following:

1.The darkness and maturity. And I don't get it. The story progresses. The plot is darker. It's logical. What do they actually want? Philosopher's Stone number 2?

2.The middle section being slow. I think that because of the very fast-paced and action-packed first hour of the film it feels like the second act drags at parts. Though there ARE critics who liked very much the fact that there is more space for character development and emotional depth. So this is quite a polarizing issue about the film.

3.Lack of adults with the exception of Ralph Fiennes. I still don't get it. The point is that the Trio is left alone in the wilderness. Why would they show the adult ones? It's supposed to be a film that has to do with the Trio's emotions and own journey. And by excluding anything that happens in the rest of the wizarding world it is even more emphasized.

    4. No resolution. Though most reviews didn't make that point, there were few that mentioned that the film has this feeling of being 'incomplete'. I still think that Dobby's death, the sacrifice, Harry's realization of the danger, the fact that we know what these Deathly Hallows are, that Voldemort gets the most powerful wand making it all seem even more frustrating for the Trio and that they have just found a final haven to be protected before the war are enough elements for a rather satisfying 'resolution'. After all, it's Part I of a 2-part story.

These are the complaints. Everyone's praising the Trio's performances and the cinematography, score and art direction have received rave reviews. Also, every technical aspect has been praised(from costume design to visual effects).

    THIS, black.

It's really weird, because I think everyone should expect these changes! Critics were really hoping that they would see a fantasy film? Come on! To me, the reviewers are being too picky!
  • blackvenomblackvenom Posts: 3,257
    Exactly.

They'd better wait for Part II which will be full of fantasy epic battle sequences at their beloved Hogwarts Castle. But they're missing the point anyway.

many critics are praising the darkness, maturity and slow-paced of the film..

"...but the real core of the movie this time are actually the 3 main characters. Their dialogue scenes take centre stage and are played in the most realistic possible way, with long silences, pauses and meaningful looks. "

"The most praiseworthy aspect of all is that this episode – unlike the one before it – once again gets Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) working as a team... The big strength of this movie is that it doesn’t rush. It allows time for the three leading performers in a way that the previous films haven’t. "

Yeah 85%!! But it's stupid because all the reviews said that the bad thing is that the movie is too dark... WTF? It needs to be dark! Half-Blood Prince was full of funny moments so we want dark times! Shut the f*** off critics!

    ComingSoon: Negative, 6.5/10

    The Bottom Line:
"Deathly Hallows – Part 1" steps things up from the last chapter before hitting an impenetrable lull that drags the second half down so much that when the movie ends, you're left feeling let-down and somewhat cheated. Of course, the fans of the book will probably be more forgiving but the pacing problems seems to come from the movie's attempts to be faithful, and at a certain point, making a solid movie that stands on its own merits should have come first. "Deathly Hallows - Part 1" isn't necessarily bad but it's more than a little disappointing.

  • well i would not take the reviewer of comingsoon.net seriously after he said last year in the review of HBP that "Sadly, it feels that the movie is trying too hard to retain the straying young women who have become enamored by the "Twilight" series, rather than remaining true to itself."

Richard it's the Coming Soon one!
  • One thing that bothers me is the comments about the "pace" of the movie. Come on, Warner. You did test screenings and most of people complained about that! What's the purpose of doing a test screening, then?
    COME ON!!!!
  • In comingsoon.net, i do not believe in Edward Douglas' review in HP. Even the commentors thought he is a terrible reviewer. The other reviewer of the site, Joshua Stanes is a good and fair reviewer. I hope he reviews this film sooner.

  • Man. The reviewer from Coming Soon gave 7.5 to THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE and 7.5 to CLASH OF THE TITANS! COME ONNN. BULLSHIT! #$$!$#$#$##%%$ BASTARD!
