It actually was purple during filming, but it seems they've made it a bright blue for the film.

It is purple in the behind the scenes picture, and it even looks purplish in the film right before Hagrid pushes it. It probably glows, like decarus pointed out.

It looks purple when Hagrids hand is pushing it down, but more blue when it's alone. Maybe it's a very pale purple.
