I think that there are many reasons why they had to use the polyjuice potion on the others instead of him. First, he had the trace on him and if he drank a potion than it might set off the trace( they used thestrals, brooms, and the motorbike in order to not set off the trace). Also, I think that, in a way, J.K. wanted to mirror Harry and Voldemort during this scene. The seven potters are compared to the seven horcruxes. It further characterizes harrys good because instead of wanting the extra lives(polyjuiced harrys or horxcruxs) he rejects the idea because he doesn't want to risk the lives of others in order to save his own.
I don't think she put it in there because it was the most logical thing to do. Instead, she wanted to make the book into more of a great literary work.
