Well coming back to seriousness, I don't really know. Lupin was a werewolf. And we know there are no such things as werewolves in real life. Only wolves exist. So Lupin's animagus was a magical creature according to this logic, wasn't it? :-?

what I mean to say is, that I'm not sure if humans can take a form as complex as the thestral. The cat is a simple creature, but the others, like the unicorn, Manticore, etc, are too close to human complexity, I think :-?
I don't know the rules of this, I may be wrong.
