The article is something I agree with but there are some comments below which is not acceptable. I think those commentors are some HP-hater retards or under the influence of the imperius curse. What makes me hate those commentors are some are discouraging the writer of the article which is an avid Harry Potter fan. Good thing there are some people who are in their right minds. Let us give our say in this topic. Here's the link: http://chud.com/articles/articles/24631/1/COMIC-CON-HARRY-POTTER-AND-THE-OSCAR-STATUE/Page1.html

Here's the article:

Watching the extended (and often breathtaking) trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at Comic Con on Saturday a thought crossed my mind - could this be when Harry Potter goes for the Oscar?

The series has been in competition for some categories in the past, but it's never made it into the Best Picture race. Which is understandable, as I don't know that many (if any) of the films to date have been worthy. There was some talk about Half Blood Prince (which I sort of agreed with), especially when the Best Picture category opened up to ten films, but it never came to pass. But now Deathly Hallows looks like something altogether different, and I wonder if the series' time hasn't finally come.

What was most impressive about the footage show at Con was the sweep and scale of it, contrasted with the emotion. What we saw looked like a Harry Potter film, but it didn't have the standard look of a Potter movie. The film looks huge and completely epic. Director David Yates has changed up the cinematography for scenes in the first part, using handheld to create a shaky, unsteady atmosphere around Harry, Ron and Hermione as they go on the run. And more than that even in the few scenes we saw the tone was dark, raw and elegiac. There's power in the imagery and in the finality. Yates imbues the scenes with a sense of danger that was missing from the other chapters because they were, quite simply, not the finale. It's adult, but in a way that feels totally consistent with the growth of the series.

It looks to me like the two parts of Deathly Hallows are in the running for the best of the series. But what about Best Picture? Having not seen the films I can't argue anything on merit, but I can argue on larger issues. There has never been a film series quite like the Harry Potter films. They're fantasy adventure versions of Michael Apted's Up films, and they're a triumph purely as achievements. Not only did the series keep the same cast, allowing the young actors to grow with their roles, it's actually a series where the films got better as they went along. It's the inverse of standard sequel business, and it's been inspiring to watch a popular, mainstream film series maintain a level of quality from picture to picture, and to even try to top itself again and again. You can argue which film is best or your favorite, but the sheer reality is that there has almost never been a part 6 of a series as well made as Half Blood Prince. It's remarkable.

And that's a big part of what could be earning one of these films a spot on The Ten. Remember, Best Picture goes to the producer, and the Academy could very well be looking to honor the producers of this series for what they accomplished. It's like the Return of the King Oscar - I'm not sure they gave it to the movie for the movie, because I think they gave it to the movie for the trilogy. An Oscar (or just a nom - I think unless Deathly Hallows really, really surprises it has no actual chance at winning) for one of the final two wouldn't be just for the nominated film but rather for the entire series as a whole.

There are roadblocks. The Academy doesn't like sequels. The Academy is a bit biased against genre pictures. And even if those can be overcome (Warner Bros is already selling the films as the culmination of a saga, which feels more prestigious than just another sequel), the question of which picture should get the nod complicates things. The first film will likely have a large amount of emotional content, and will feel very, very unlike previous Potter films. In the Comic Con footage we saw Ron and Harry fighting as the pressures of being on the run ate away at them, and we saw our heroes battle dark wizards in a very Muggle diner. This is the film that's probably going to feel almost experimental when placed up against the rest of the series, with a darker emotional edge and with a grittier focus. But then there's Part II, which looks to be just huge, and to balance emotion with overwhelming spectacle.

Even if the Academy doesn't wake up from their geriatric slumber to recognize one of popular cinema's greatest longform triumphs, the fans will be more than pleased. The final two films look to be as grand and as exhilarating as we had hoped. I was stirred and deeply moved by the few minutes I saw in Hall H; I can't wait to see how deeply the full films touch me.

In the box office DH will smash Inception.......Inception did rather well for a film with an original screenplay.......but I think DH might have a chance with best adaptive screenplay.......it might win that......sound mixing and sound editing, likely going to be Inception......DH might have a chance at Film editing......but Inception as of right now is leading that category, hope Heyman is paying attention to that if he really wants HP to win an Academy for something.......Best Directing....I doubt that they will give it to Yates....the critics that vote on the Academy winners always choose the wrong directors, did you see last years? Cameron's ex-wife won and Hurt Locker was nothing special in a directors view......Avatar had that in the bag, the critics don't know jack.....that's why I don't think that a HP film will ever win best directing......at least not with the current Academy Critics we got voting.........Best Costume design....I doubt DH will even get nominated.....they always choose the boring costume designs.....these critics need to hang it up and just Die....seriously.....they are hurting the film industry with their stupid picks......Best Art Direction.......maybe DH has a chance.....as for best and supporting actors/actresses.........the critics will never pick 'em........we would because we love our actors.........but critics.......someone please shoot them all........get rid of those 60-70 year old critics......as for Best Picture......I don't think DH will have a chance....as much as I love HP....let's be honest.....the critics will never pick it to win or even be nominated.........

I think that the Academy Award votes should be divided into 3's. 1/3 of the votes coming from the Academy critics......1/3 coming from the actors/actresses themselves......and 1/3 coming from the fans........that's how the Awards should be.......the viewer ratings will skyrocket if they do that........and the real winners will actually win.........and not have question marks on their wins....like hurt Locker last year.......the critics hate James Cameron......so why not screw him over by giving it to his ex-wife while he was in attendance and they even seated him right behind her........plus I also think that the Academy critics gangbanged Kathryn Bigelow.......that's how she won......c'mon Hurt Locker was nothing special........

    Avatar shoulda won.......

True right there.....Avatar is the real winner......for best picture and best directing..........I mean c'mon the man changed the film industry with 3d cameras.........Chris Nolan has a good chance for Inception............right now he has the critics by the balls and drooling for his next film............

Got to disagree with you there . . . Avatar was nothing more than a giant special effect with a "we've seen it a thousand times" story line. The Hurt Locker was original and well directed and deserved that Oscar. The only Oscar Avatar deserved was one for fooling so many people into seeing it more than once.

no Hurt Locker did not deserve it...........Avatar changed the movie industry.......Cameron changed the movie industry........Hurt Locker and Bigelow........they won the sympathy Award from the critics......

Ahhh Richard . . . so you are a little annoyed that I don't like Avatar? Well we all know you don't like Yates but that doesn't stop you from saying it ALL THE TIME (however, you've been good recently).

If you like flashy things then you're going to like Avatar, if you like substance and story you'll like Hurt Locker.

That's fine, I didn't say you couldn't like it. I enjoyed Avatar's special effects too, they were incredible but it's story was lacking. I just said that I think the Hurt Locker deserved the Oscar more.

I personally think that it all comes down to WHAT YOU ENJOY. Avatar is a visually stunning, immersive cinematic experience. The 3D is amazing, the actors are fairly good, and the world and culture is just incredible. But the film relies mainly on the visuals to guide it through. There's always one thing that I believe every movie should have: good visuals that accompany an even better STORY. Avatar, like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, had the opposite. I loved Avatar, but I think it does a bit of a trick with its amazing world and THAT'S what draws you in, not the script or story. The story was recycled, but it really didn't need a truly imaginative and original story for it to be good, unlike Transformers 2.

With the Hurt Locker, there's great acting and it is very intense, like Inception. It has a fascinating plot and, while a bit confusing/boring at times, it pays off. It has amazing visuals that COMPLIMENT the story. That's what drives it and makes it a success. I believe that, like Inception, this is what made the film succeed and I loved it a lot.

So it all depends on whether you like FX or Story, or, like me, BOTH.

    A list?

The story is just a rehash of Dances with wolves/Pocahontas. It SHOVES an anti-military/anti-corporate message down your throat with very 2 dimensional characters. You know from the very beginning that the antagonists are going to attack that giant tree but you have to wait 2 hours for it to happen. The Aliens/Niave are specifically designed to look sexy with big disney eyes to make you think they are vulnerable . . . just tons of stuff like this drives me nuts LOL

so do I but Avatar's story was so lacking I couldn't ignore it. The whole movie was just so Cameron could make a TON of cash . . .and he did.

Sorry for misunderstanding you aaron :-)

Richard, I loved the special effects in Avatar (best I've probably ever seen in a movie) but as it was well put above, some people like special effects more and others like story more. I happen to like story just a little bit more so that sways my opinion.

That's cool richard, again . . . please don't think I'm angry or think any less of you just because your opinion is different than mine. If we all had the same opinion it would be pretty boring actually. It's just fun that we can come on here and talk about our likes and dislikes and then give our reasons :-)
