It's going to be another masterpiece, like District 9. And to think that Blomkamp only needed 30 millions for that one. And this one has 3 times more budget.
Shit. This film is looking better and better with all this new stuff. Love how vivid and spectacular a world Blompkamp is creating this time around. If anyone is right for a Halo film, it's him.
So awesome to see Wagner Moura's name in the credits. I hope his character has some substantial screentime, as Alice Braga's will probably be very featured, according to the trailer.
Honestly, I'm a bit taken aback and somewhat disappointed. I hate reviews that dampen the excitement. The film still looks incredible, I guess I'll have to see for myself.
RT: "After the heady sci-fi thrills of District 9, Elysium is a bit of a comedown for director Neill Blomkamp, but on its own terms, it delivers just often enough to satisfy."
I was lucky enough to win tickets to an advance screening tonight, and i must say after Neill's first film, District 9, which excellent, i was some what disapointed by Elysium. It's not in no way a horrible film, it's a good one. Just don't go in with high expectations due to District 9. Matt Damon was obviously great in the role and so was everyone else. The action was shot in very interesting ways and was very exciting. One thing that need to be mentioned is the score which is absolutely amazing. It has a bit of a Hans Zimmer vibe to it. The main problem with the film is it's story/character development. Yes, the concept of Earth and Elysium is very interesting, but it is were it goes that messes everything. It seems as if the screenwriters were just throwing a bunch of storylines into the film that were unnecessary instead of just focusing on one (Matt Damon's). The political aspect didn't really fit the film. The social division did, but not this situation involving Jodie Foster's character and others. The film is also VERY dark. I was expecting some light humor throughout but nope. Its not a flaw, i love dark films, so i was pleasently surprised. The film also didn't really flesh out Damon's Max character all that much. The film starts with flashbacks of his childhood that were interesting but doesn't really continue after that. In all, it's an enjoyable film, one that actually focuses more on the story than the action but the story does deviate sometimes which gets kind of ridiculous at points. Great action and acting (especially from Shartlo Copley who is incredibly good as the villain). The pacing also moves really fast and never really gives time for the film to breath. It's enjoyable but just don't go in expecting District 9 Part 2.
RATING: 6.8/10
P.S: the movie was also actually pretty darn gory :P

Blompkamp has been accused of heavy-handiness. Interesting.
I'm watching it on Friday
