After catching a preview screening of the film, i felt that the movie delivered in what it had aimed to do.. provide mindless fun for audiences to escape there lives and get lost in a pure popcorn type flick.. which is what Director Peter Berg aimed to do as he made it clear during his Q&A with the preview screening audience that i got to attend.

It is a very patriotic film, so if you don't like American marines saving the world from alien invasions be warned.
It has a strong resemblance to other major Hasbro franchise 'Transformers' in this sense with similar premises and patriotism. This is clear throughout this film as Berg mentioned he has a fondness for the marines in his Q&A and can be seen throughout the film.
Although the film suffers from many american stereotypes and strong use of patriosm it still manages to provide for an entertaining film with some stunning visual effects (much better than transformers, as the action can clearly be seen and understood on screen).

The movie also flows quite well despite having a fairly rushed ending, but manages to keep up its pace throughout its 2 hour run time with a balance of action, romance, and humor. The humor was welcomed most fondly as it is not to over the top and helps keep up the fun factor of the film by not taking itself to seriously. The cast was a highlight of the film as most of the actors did an exceptional job in playing there roles, and for those wondering whether or not Rihanna was a mistake .. fear no further as she did a great job in playing her tough counterpart.

It also featured some tracks from ACDC to make the battles even more epic and exciting, which will especially be a nice for fans of the band.
The cinematography was also done quite well, with some nice shots of Hawaii. Also the CGI and special effects were of coarse top notch and helped make this movie into the fun action film it is.
The movie also succeeded in adapting the board game into film with some nice references to it with the unknown enemy attacks and grid map in allocating the next attack, which will be a pleasant surprise for fans of the board game.

Overall, a film that provides in what it aims to, provide a pure fun popcorn flick.
And make sure to stick around until after the credits for a bonus scene.

    Overall Rating:
