Yes, it's a week from now.

Yes, the anticipation could not be LESS exciting. It's going to (most likely) be a terrible show, but hey--a lot of us here will watch it anyway, despite all the snubs. So I just thought I'd get the official thread ready so we can talk about the winners and such a week from now, whether our discussion is positive or negative.

Anyways, here's the latest predictions update from EW--

Best Picture
The Artist - 20%
The Help - 15%
Hugo - 15%
The Descendants - 10%
Midnight in Paris - 10%
Moneyball - 10%
The Tree of Life - 8%
War Horse - 7%
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - 5%

Best Actor
George Clooney - 35%
Jean Dujardin - 30%
Brad Pitt - 15%
Demian Bichir - 10%
Gary Oldman - 10%

Best Actress
Viola Davis - 35%
Meryl Streep - 30%
Michelle Williams - 20%
Glenn Close - 10%
Rooney Mara - 5%

Best Supporting Actor
Christopher Plummer - 45%
Max von Sydow - 30%
Kenneth Branagh - 15%
Jonah Hill - 5%
Nick Nolte - 5%

Best Supporting Actress
Octavia Spencer - 35%
Melissa McCarthy - 25%
Berenice Bejo - 20%
Jessica Chastain - 10%
Janet McTeer - 10%

Best Director
Michel Hazanavicius - 30%
Martin Scorsese - 25%
Woody Allen - 20%
Terrence Malick - 15%
Alexander Payne - 10%

Other predicted winners from EW: (r.u. = runner up)

Original Screenplay - Midnight in Paris (r.u. The Artist)
Adapted Screenplay - The Descendants (r.u. Moneyball, Hugo)
Foreign Language Film - A Separation (r.u. In Darkness)
Animated Feature - Rango
Animated Short Film - The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore
Editing - The Artist (r.u. Hugo, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
Cinematography - The Tree of Life (r.u. The Artist, Hugo)
Art Direction - Hugo
Costume Design - The Artist
Makeup - The Iron Lady (r.u. Albert Nobbs)
Original Score - The Artist
Original Song - Man or Muppet, The Muppets
Visual Effects - Rise of the Planet of the Apes (r.u. Hugo)
Sound Mixing - Hugo (r.u. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, War Horse)
Sound Editing - Hugo
Documentary Feature - Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (r.u. Pina, If a Tree Falls)
Documentary Short - Saving Face (r.u. Incident in New Baghdad, God Is the Bigger Elvis)
Live Action Short - The Shore

-----

Well. Yikes. Not so impressive results for Potter. Not even a runner-up mention. I don't know, I still think we have a chance at visual effects. I also hope The Artist or Hugo sneaks into take Cinematography, and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo takes Sound Mixing. Finally, I'm PRAYING TO GOD that Jean Dujardin beats Clooney for the Best Actor win. He won the BAFTA, Globe, and the SAG award, so hopefully he'll win here, even though the predictions say that Clooney is slightly ahead.

Also: this is NOT a thread to bitch and moan about Potter being snubbed. You may discuss about it's chances to win the categories for which it's nominated, but it's mainly a thread about the winners and the race.

I'd want Moneyball for BP, but I know that's not happening.

I like the Artist, but it's not holy fuck amazing. But if the Artist winning means Hugo losing, then trololol I'm in :p

The Artist will win BP. I don't think there's really any doubt. I probably won't mind if Hugo wins, though I'll be a little ruffled and it's probably never going to happen...but if the Help wins. Well, let's just say I'll use some words I never thought existed.

Oh I like it but yeah, to me it's DEFINITELY not holy fuck amazing. It's very gimmicky, it's using the black and white no sound heavily to its advantage, but I still like it.

I have not seen The Artist (and never will because it's obsolete), but what is so great about it? Why is the Academy licking its balls?

Because it's a black and white silent movie about making black and white silent movies.

    Movieception
  • aaronaaron Posts: 20,950 mod
I don't know. It was just very simplistic and beautiful. I was crying through half of it simply because it was so nostalgic. The performance from Dujardin is incredible, his expressions and little nuances are breathtaking. Based on the fact that he can do such a great performance without any dialogue says he deserves the win.

Yes, the Academy might just be "licking its balls" because OMG it's a silent film in a world of sound, HOW ORIGINAL, but it truly is a fantastic film and much better than any of the other BP nominees I've seen.

War Horse is the only best pic nominee that I've seen that I actually liked.

Yeah I didn't feel that. I liked it because it had a good plot and how it was conveyed without sound was well done. But the first quarter of the movie is slow and it takes a while to get moving.

I will also be watching. I hope Potter can win 1 oscar. And that michelle wins best actress.

Ew. The Artist plays on nostalgia? Well, no wonder it's winning awards, then. Looking at something through the lens of nostalgia isn't very... logical.

It would be like me watching the Pokemon and Power Rangers movies and liking them now because I liked them as a child. It's idiotic to the max.

Well, I'm not quite sure because I don't really remember how the silent films of the old era were made, but just the feeling of being able to see one again...it was fascinating.

No wonder the latest nominees are generic and DH2 was snubbed. Most of the voters are old farts.

Buddy: “I guess we have to fill these out again” (sighs)
Milton: “Yes, and this time pay attention – last year you voted for Black Swan because you thought it was one of those Walt Disney True Life Adventures. It didn’t have no swans in it at all, just that crazy little Portman girl dancing around, sprouting wings.”
Buddy: “I remember making those Disney pictures – had to kill a lot of lemmings for one of them. What have we got on this year’s menu?”
Milton: ” Well, there’s The Help. That sounds pretty good – we were always happy with ours.”
Buddy: “Yeah, true enough, give a couple of the ladies some awards, but not the movie – don’t want to encourage anything, y’know.”
Milton: “How about Moneyball? You like baseball.”
Buddy: “That Pitt kid already has everything – good looks , loads of money, Voight’s daughter, a passel of kids.”
Milton: “So that would take care of Clooney’s picture, then. Same reason, except for Voight’s daughter and the kids – he’s after everybody else’s daughter.” (both snicker)
Buddy: “Let’s go with The Artist, then. Some of that fast editing in those other pictures makes me dizzy” (both nod in agreement and tick the box)
Milton: “Best Actor…did I ever tell you what Garbo said to me?”
Buddy: “‘Get that thing out of my face?’” (both roar, wheezily)
Milton: “Now I lost my train of thought – you just reminded me that someone should send that nice German kid – Fassie-something – a telegram. We won’t tolerate that kind of behaviour.”
Buddy: “He was raised in Ireland, not Germany.”
Milton: “Oh,well, that explains it. Regardless, I don’t want to be reminded what it looked liked before it was wrapped in Depends all day”
Buddy: “Oh, look, Meryl’s on there again! Poor dear just can’t get it right. And there’s Glenn – Meryl doesn’t look so bad now, does she? Whatever happened to the real movie stars?”
Milton: “Did I ever tell you what Garbo said to me?” (fadeout)
    LMAO

    This comment is amazing:
“Paddy, it will take time, they can not kill off existing members.”

Maybe we can speed up the process. Throw them all in an arena and make them fight to the death, Hunger Games/Death Race style.

It's easy to bitch about The Artist if you want to pull out the nostalgia card but the film still stands as conveying more emotion without any Lines or sounds and creating a movie the old fashioned way without endless amounts of cgi. The film actually tells a story not only about the characters and the twisting web between them but also in the background the history of the time period. It's not the hands down best picture of all time but it's still better than most the other BP nominees. Martin I think you were too young to understand it and 8 I think you need to check it out. The nostalgia is there too in the movie but this was a small picture until it began to get noticed and ended up all the way to all these awards and garnered attention. This is in no way shape or form like Hugo which practically begs on its hands and knees for an Oscar by sticking out the nostalgia card.

Also this year I'm gonna give a kiss to the oscars. I'm doing chores and working on a sculpture and I forgot they were tonight haha. I'll check in to see the results every so often gang.

Oh I'm not saying the nostalgia is bad or the fact that it uses it, it's still very good. The touch with the depression is where I started getting into the film, it was that first quarter or first third that just felt very slow to me, now matter what it was. After that it picked up its pace, the score wasn't putting me to sleep, and it was enjoyable.

Loll, you see I sit home and listen to orchestral music or soundtracks when I want to relax it when I'm reading. To have just that with a movie didnt feel right with a light score but it picked up. It was still a good movie, but of the nominees, I'd pick Moneyball ahead of anything and then Midnight in Paris.
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
That's really a bitchslap in the face to give The Iron Lady and Albert Nobbs best makeup before HP. I've seen all 3, and HP is the best.
Well you have to see it from the Academy's POV. Goblins are fantasy. Therefore, any hours of realistic makeup applied is automatically invalid :)

As soon as you posted this I knew LCBaseball would go on another tirade about how the Academy is out of touch (except when he uses it as a source for what is and isn't a good movie) and lament the lack of a BP nom for DH2. Sad creature, he is, mmhmm.

"The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has pulled actor Sacha Baron Cohen‘s tickets from the 84th Academy Awards. This means he is banned from attending the Oscars even though he is an Academy member and one of the stars from Hugo, Paramount’s 11-nominated movie and Best Picture contender."
