2012 Box Office Game *The LORAX roars out of the gate with a $70 Million OW*

edited March 2012 in General
The biggest surprise of the year so far comes with Dr. Suess's The Lorax, opening at $70 million. Project X did great for a rated R found footage film with $20 million.

Now the big question... Will Disney's overpriced epic John Carter LOSE to The Lorax next weekend? The Lorax will drop and probably make $35-40 million... How hard will John Carter bomb? Or will it come to fight? 2012 has been a great year at the box office so far, and will likely see the March total gross record fall with 'The Hunger Games' opening on the 23rd.

But Chronicle has more screens does that mean something?

Woman in Black has had a base support of people wanting to see Radcliffe post potter. The ticket sales have been slightly ahead of chronicle as well.

I don't think less screens will hurt it.

    Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus:
    The Woman in Black

    64%

Daniel Radcliffe tackles his first major post-Harry Potter role in The Woman in Black, and critics say this spooky, atmospheric ghost story conjures up some terrific old-fashioned thrills. Radcliffe stars as Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer who journeys to a small town to settle the estate of a recently-deceased, reclusive widow. However, the locals are reluctant to discuss the matter, and for good reason -- a spectral presence casts a dark shadow over the community. The pundits say The Woman in Black sometimes relies too heavily on jump scares, but mostly it does the resurrected Hammer Films imprint proud by harkening back to the company's Gothic glory days, and Radcliffe is rock-solid in the lead role.

    Chronicle

    85%

A found-footage mockumentary about teenagers with superpowers, Chronicle is also terrifically acted and endlessly imaginative, critics say. Andrew (Dane DeHaan) is a kid who's being bullied at home and at school when he starts videotaping his daily activities. His footage gets exponentially more interesting when he and two of his friends develop telekinetic powers after visiting a mysterious gulch. The pundits say the Certified Fresh Chronicle is an action-packed sci-fi yarn that doesn't skimp on character development, and the result is an exciting, emotionally resonant feature debut for director Josh Trank.

My theater was about 90% full. When we got to the theater, there was a line for WIB. lol I was kind of surprised.

Really glad they marketed this film smartly. It could become the January sleeper hit, like The Devil Inside.

    First numbers (predictions):

    Chronicle - $22 million
The Woman in Black - $21 million

Remember, these are subject to change, even if just by a small margin. Still, it could mean a switch between the two films, though it's likely Chronicle will stay atop the chart.

Star Wars needs 3.4 billion dollars to pass Potter. That's about 560 million dollars for each of the re-releases.

Doesn't look like that's happening, 23 opening weekend will not get it close.
  • aaronaaron Posts: 20,950 mod
Star Wars won't ever cross Potter. However, we do have the new Bond movie coming out this fall. :-S

Bond is 2.6 billion back. The last two have made just short of 600 million. Given that, let's say they'll make 600 million each. That means it'll take 5 Bond movies to pass it. I really don't see Craig doing another 4 movies on top of Skyfall. It will probably be a long time until we get 5 Bond movies, despite getting one this year. When Craig leaves, who knows how long it will take for a reboot? Perhaps by the time that happens, Potter re-releases in 3D and ups that gap even more.
  • Darth LedgerDarth Ledger Posts: 6,594 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes but we will have Potter re-releases 5 years down the road that will be bigger than these Str Wars re-releases.

2012 has started off amazing. Can't wait for an actual blockbuster to come out.

I wouldn't count Marvel as a franchise. They're can release as many films as they want, like Thor, Captain America, and X-Men First Class all last year.
  • RichardRichard Posts: 48,703 mod
But i thought wikipedia was counting them as a franchise :/

It is indeed! There's..what? Almost five more films planned for the future, and no doubt more will keep coming. I guess it is a threat.

No one but wikipedia counts it as a franchise though! lmfao, it definitely doesn't count seeing they can release 3-5 a year :p
  • Martin1Martin1 Posts: 7,849 ✭✭✭✭✭
If they have like 4 Iron Mans, 3 Hulks, and 2 Cap and Thor's, they're going to treat each as it's own franchise.
  • aaronaaron Posts: 20,950 mod

Yeah, that's not fair...they have an Iron Man 3 in the works, a Thor 2, most likely an Avengers 2. They're also in talks for War Machine and Black Widow spinoffs...I could see them doing a Hawkeye spinoff and a Mark Ruffalo Incredible Hulk reboot as well.
